How to Coordinate Accessories: Adding in a Unique Color

The idea of how to coordinate accessories by adding in a unique color started with a request from a reader. Our readers confessed she is working on trying to kick her matchy matchy habit. I thought we could showcase this by introducing a different color in various ways to an outfit. I started with mix and match colors, while Lesley added in a contrasting color with her shoes.
Now Charlotte is using her accessories in this same manner.

Quote of the day: “Change the voices in your head. Make them like you instead.” Pink

I hope you read this quote over and over every day. Because I know that we are our own worst critics. Words are extremely powerful whether you are saying them whether to others or yourself.
This includes saying things like “I could never wear that” or “that wouldn’t look good on me.” If you say that, of course it will be true because you’ve already put those negative thoughts in your mind.

How do I know this? Because I used to say those things ALL the time. Are you shocked? Did you think I was always so bold in my style? I was the farthest thing from bold. I mean, heck, the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree. Yet both my mom and I have grown tenfold since starting this blog.
And if you want to have your style evolve, it can certainly happen. It’s all about what you want and if you’re willing to try. Baby steps, as I always say!

So let’s analyze how Charlotte incorporated the idea to coordinate accessories with a totally different color than what is in her pants or top.

A new color to coordinate accessories

A blue and white outfit is so classic for summer. Yet my mom’s capris are scattered with flowers and the colors green. lighter blue and purple. Because of the colors of the flowers, I’m sure most of us would automatically reach for blue, green or purple to use to coordinate accessories for this outfit.
Yet for this particular theme, Charlotte grabbed a totally different color for her jewelry and purse. Orange!! Now how do you even think to grab orange accessories??

Take a gander at the scarf that my mom used to line her clear purse. Sure, you might notice that its an owl print. But if you look even closer, you’ll see the multitude of colors that are in her pants, ALONG with orange (and even a couple of other colors).
Since these colors looks so good in the scarf, why not incorporate them into the entire outfit??

Insider tip: Use the beautiful scarves that you already have as inspiration for new color combinations!

I’d also like to point out that my mom added a knot to the front of her shirt. Using my favorite clear elastic bands makes this kind of trick super easy.
Why add a knot to your shirt? This is a wonderful way to create some interest or a better proportion in the outfit. If you don’t like tucking in your top a trick like this can make the top half a smaller proportion. Tying a knot like this also takes away the horizontal line at the middle of your body.

Coordinate Accessories

The secret with the idea to coordinate accessories is to add in more than one piece to make it look like a design. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the idea of adding in only one accessory of a different color, but if you’re not sure, then adding a couple of pieces of jewelry of similar color will seem more intentional.
You can see how my mom brought in orange with her necklace, earrings, ring and purse (with the inspiration scarf in it).
