How to Layer your Necklaces
This post isn’t just about how to layer your necklaces. It’s full of ideas of how to work with what you have and Lesley is also sharing a bit of insight into her jewelry collection. In addition, I’m sharing some fun murals from an area in Phoenix.
Quote of the day: “I attribute my success to this- I never gave or took any excuse.” Florence Nightingale
The idea for this week’s styling came from a request from a reader. The request was “I have a lot of neutral colors (in my earrings and necklaces) and I’d like to find a way to add some colors to make my outfits pop without spending a lot of extra money on jewelry.”
There are many ways to interpret this request, so we each tried to focus on different elements, yet concentrating more on the jewelry detail.
Make sure to see how I added some DIY to my jewelry. And how Charlotte combined two different kinds of accessories.
Color in an Outfit

Pants: Style & Co~~ Top: Chicos-thrifted ~~ Shoes: Coach & Four~~ Necklace: ~~ Purse: no label
While Lesley is going to concentrate on the idea of wearing more “neutral” necklaces, her overall outfit still has wonderful color. She is wearing a beautiful, bright, sleeveless tunic that she picked up secondhand.
On top of that, she carried the color throughout the outfit in her shoes and purse too! All of these items are very budget oriented.
You can see this same top with a pair of white shorts and different blue shoes that Lesley wore here.
So let’s focus on how to layer your necklaces even if you mainly have neutral ones. Remember Lesley showed us a great example of this when we were trying to camouflage our decollete earlier this year.
How to Layer Your Necklaces

Let me have Lesley interject, “Layering is very stylish now and is more interesting than a single lone chain and pendant. I chose to focus on the dragonfly pendant in the above photo. Three other chains were ones I’ve had with various pendants that I took off for this look. Although I did keep the “happiness” pendant as part of the ensemble to add bulk to it.”
The dragonfly is actually a pin or brooch. Most of our pins can be used as a pendant on your necklace. I showcased this on my pearl necklace this winter.
Insider tip: Remember it’s perfectly acceptable to mix your metals together. While it’s hard to distinguish in this photo, the happiness pendant is silver while some of the necklaces are gold.
Check out how Lesley wore this same top with a different variety of layered necklaces here.

Then it’s not hard to change up the exact combination with a more colorful pin. The felt brooch adds more texture to the overall look since it’s not a metal.
Lesley points out that you should raid your mother’s or grandmother’s jewelry box (with their permission of course) to find some vintage pieces.
Insider tip: If your pin or brooch doesn’t stay upright when you slide it through your necklace, then you can pin it to the spot where you want it to be.

For Lesley’s third example, she got a bit dressier by adding pearls and a black and gold necklace. Notice that all of the necklaces are similar in size with the loop ending up about the same in length.
The focal point is this gold flower clip earring attached off center.
Insider tip: Even if you don’t have any clip on earrings, they can be found at your local thrift store I bet. Or get creative. There are other objects around your household that might work like a stud earring if your chain is open enough. Or how about a button, wine charm, or even a ring?
ALWAYS remember, just because it’s made for one way, doesn’t mean it can’t be worn another way.

Color in your Other Elements
You can see how Lesley’s bracelets are also more neutral, yet the outfit is still colorful. The blue of the purse and her shoes really tie together with the blue tunic.
Any bright colored shoes would be a punch of color for this outfit. We recently showcased yellow shoes which would also look nice. Can you imagine bright pink shoes, orange ones or even green?

Lesley’s Jewelry Collection
In Lesley’s words, “Building a jewelry wardrobe doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. Starting with existing simple chains of various length, textures and metals with or without pendants.
Because I tend to keep pieces for years, I have several necklaces that I layer to make fuller looks. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have an interesting necklace wardrobe. You just need patience and places to store them.”
Insider tip: Just because a necklace came with a pendant on it, doesn’t mean you can’t take it off or put it on a different chain. If you tend to forget that, it’s better to store the pendants separate from the necklaces and then you will be more apt to interchange them.
“Fun necklace and or bracelets can be found at thrift stores, estate sales or garage sales. Even if you don’t have a specific outfit that a piece will go with when it catches your eye, you should get it, if the price is right. You never know what you’ll be inspired to mix it with next week, month or year. This is part of impulse buying. It can pay off by becoming a unique accessory years down the road.”
“I have no problem mixing a strand of ‘dime store’ pearls with ones that are high end. The best part of accessories and jewelry is they never get too small if you gain weight.”

Phoenix Murals

Our adventure for these photos was to downtown Phoenix. There is an art district on Roosevelt street that is beautified by murals. The top left and below left is the one Lesley was in front of for these photos.
