How to Pick the Right Glasses Frame for Your Face and Tips for Online Glasses

There’s always the question of how to pick the right glasses frame for your face when I talk about shopping for glasses online. And I recently had a request from a reader about glasses. PLUS a friend asked about adjusting them.
Now I’m not an expert except for the fact that I’ve been wearing glasses a LONG time and started buying them online when I retired 7 years ago.

Quote of the day: “I don’t want to be a supermodel. I want to be a role model.” Queen Latifah

This is a quote for all of us because we can influence everyone in our circle. By this time in our lives, we have many life experiences so why not share with others.
In the past, I wrote about the options with online glasses and some tips. But today I wanted to focus on how to pick the right glasses frame for your face along with a couple of other hacks I’ve picked up.

How to Pick the Right Glasses Frame for your Face

You can scour the internet to find all kinds of opinions of what shape of glasses is good depending on the shape of your face. Me? I have an oval shaped face, so supposedly all shapes will work.
The articles I read talk about balance with your face and how the shape of your glasses work with the shape of your face.

I understand that balance thing. It’s no different than how we balance a wider/looser pair of pants with a tighter top. Yet let’s also consider that sometimes the absolute best look is when we break those rules!!

In fact, I will tell you that I’ve had comments that the pink glasses below on the right, were too big for my face. Yet I will counter that I’m not trying to hide the fact that I’m wearing glasses. WHY can’t the glasses be wider than my face?? Who comes up with these rules??

So in answer to the question of how to pick the right glasses frame for your face, I’m going to say that this is hogwash!!! I think there is something even more important than the shape of the glasses. Can you guess what that is??

Case in Point

I really pondered my thoughts above after writing them. And I want to know your opinion. Have you ever looked at someone and said I don’t like the shape of those glasses with the shape of someone’s face??
Heck, I have a hard time telling the difference between many of the “shapes” for our face.
I think it’s the shape of the glasses that really get our attention (along with the next subject below). But I want to hypothesize that it does NOT correlate to our face shape. SO let’s stop worrying about that!!

Color!!

Did you guess color?? Our glasses sit front and center on our face so this is the perfect way to bring a beautiful color to add warmth and glow to your face.

Let me tell you a story. When I bought these pink glasses at my eye doctor’s office over 7 years ago, the assistant was a 50+ woman who looked like she had given up. She commented that she loved the pink glasses but she could never wear them. That she would be too afraid of the color.
And I just wanted to take her hand and tell her she could wear any color that she liked. That she was beautiful both inside and out and deserved to have fun with her clothing and accessories.

Confession: I am clumsy with words. Writing is not my forte. BUT I am passionate about how we are ALL wonderful and should embrace our age, body and self.
That’s why I wrote the post Perfectly Imperfect 2 years ago.

Sure, there might be days that maybe you need more “neutral” glasses to coordinate with your outfit, but the advantage of online glasses is how most are so reasonably priced.
SO you can have a couple of pairs to change out depending on the day.

What I think is wonderful is to have some variety with your glasses. They are not only functional but can be stylish too!! That’s why you should experiment with a smaller pair, a larger pair, a color pair and then maybe a wild card.

Brands of Online Glasses I’ve Tried

I’m not trying to sell you on a particular brand. No, this isn’t sponsored or I don’t get any commission on any of these. However, my previous post about the pros and cons of the brands, may be out of date. Luckily most brands have updated their offerings over time.
But I wanted to list the companies that I’ve been using lately in alphabetical order.

EyeBuyDirect. The first online company I used and I was very impressed with their customer service.
Glasses Shop. Even mom and Lesley have tried this company and used my discount code, GSHOT35 for some glasses.
Voogue Me. They have more fun and sassy glasses.
Zenni. They have a ton of useful information on many of the how tos. Although they talk about how to pick the right glasses frame for your face too, and I want to disagree with it.

Insider tip: Just like you should never say never with a clothing style, the shape of your glasses isn’t the only factor. Maybe you want the glasses to be the focus or you want a certain look. Not all glasses shapes are created equal. It’s dependent on the color, material and size also!!

Tips and What I’ve Learned

  1. Over time (or sometimes when you get them) they may need to be adjusted to fit your face better.
If you’ve ever watched the eye doctor’s office do this, mine always used a flame to warm the wire/plastic so they could bend it “SLIGHTLY“. You can do this same technique with hot water.
I run the arm under hot water for a couple of minutes until it is more pliable.

Insider tip: Are you worried you will wreck your glasses doing this? You could either practice on an old pair first. Or see if your local eye doctor will adjust them for you. If they have good customer service they will.

2. The colorful frames can fade over time. I have noticed this with my Liingo glasses. They used to be more teal blue, and now they are almost a dark grey. (They are the glasses I wore in the mix and match post recently). But check out the color when I first got them in this IG video. Maybe it’s not super obvious, but I can tell when I pick them up, how they aren’t as vivid.
I have not noticed this with my other pair, so maybe it’s a defect in this frame?

3. How do you clean your glasses?? I used to always use rubbing alcohol to get the lenses clean. I learned that from my eye doctor. But lately I’ve been using my Norwex glasses cloth and it works marvelously.

4. Storing my many pairs of glasses!! This is a trick I saw on another blogger’s site. I wish I could remember and give her credit because it’s fabulous. Granted, I have over 8 pairs of glasses, so I like having them organized like this.
It’s a plastic utensil organizer like this. My particular one isn’t available, but you can look to find the size you need for the glasses and space you have to store them.

5. I had the lenses changed out for one pair of online glasses at my eye doctor’s office. I wish I had tried one of the online companies (some do offer that) for when your prescription changes but you still want to wear the same frames.
Unfortunately the glasses broke soon after I invested in this. Possibly the plastic frames are not meant for that. However, I know that I’m hard on my items too, so it could have been my fault.

6. Transition Lenses. I LOVE having my glasses have the transition lenses so I don’t have to carry or grab a pair of sunglasses. There is always a pro and con though. With the online companies, I have been able to request how much they transition, but they still aren’t quite as dark as traditional sunnies. And when we are outside for photos they don’t show up as clear even in the shade because there is usually some sun.
However, I also consider that a good thing because it protects my eyes.
