How To Style a Silk Button Up: 3 Ways

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

Our Thrifty 6 prompt was all about silk, so I had my crew come up with ways how to style a silk button up.

Anything with buttons has versatility like you wouldn’t believe.

Quote of the day: “If you’re not having fun, what’s the point, really?” Ina Garten

Even though the prompt for this article is how to style a silk button up, it would work with any kind of button blouse. And the idea of silk could be translated to satin or any shiny material.

Insider tip: The drape of the material can make a difference when styling a button up in various ways. Look for one with a soft drape.

Sometimes I try to plan out our looks so we can give you different options of how to wear an item, but for this article, I decided to let each of us style any way we wanted. Yet, we all came up with 3 different ways of how to style a silk button up.

We have showcased many ways to wear button ups in the past, so don’t forget to check out my other articles.

Charlotte: Belt Your Blouse

My mom made this silk blouse. It may not seem as shiny as most silk items but that’s because it’s silk shantugn which is a heavier and crisp weave as opposed to the softer silk you normally see. It was purchased in Shipshewana, Indiana which is an Amish market center in Northern Indiana just south of the Michigan border.

As one of the ways how to style a silk button up, Charlotte wore it untucked as a normal blouse but then added a belt over it.

Even though the look is predominantly green and white, I love how there are small sources of other colors from the decorations on the pants and the scarf on her purse.

Lesley: Wear a Silk Button Up as a Jacket

Lesley’s dress is actually a maxi skirt pulled up to be worn as a dress. Then she added her silk button up to wear as a jacket over it.

She commented that “I don’t mind showing off a bit of shoulder but since so many places are uber air-conditioned, I often wear a topper of some sort. This blouse is lightweight and somewhat tailored which gives off that dichotomy vibe with the asymmetrical hem and casual vibe of the dress.”

The cool thing about this trick with the skirt made into a dress is that she could even turn it around so the longer ends were at the sides.

So many possibilities, so little time.

How to style a silk button up tied at waist

Jodie-Tie a Blouse at the Waist

I always love how an oversized blouse can be tied at the waist to make it less overwhelming. In fact, the advantage of a silk or silk-like blouse is it drapes nicely.

The dress is from the rental program, Your Revolving Closet, and while renting clothes may not be on your radar, I highly recommend using the free 30 days. It’s an eye-opening experience to try out colors, styles, and brands that are new to you.
For instance, I’ve learned that I love the brand Express more than I ever thought.

These scarf clips can be so helpful when you want to tie the ends of a scarf or blouse. Instead of creating a bump by tying the ends, the scarf clip creates a flatter way to hold them together.

To add even more decoration around the scarf clip, I tucked the clip of a clip-on earring through the material. Clip-on earrings can provide a ton of decoration even if you don’t use them on your ears as proven in one of my articles.

The Thrifty 6 With Silk

With the fashion and textile industry being a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided to make it the mission of this little group to focus on second-hand items. Every month we will choose a theme and share our styles with you to hopefully inspire you to shop more preloved and less fast fashion.

Insider tip: If there aren’t many wonderful secondhand shops near you, then I included a list of online shops that I love at the end of this post.

Check out the other members of the Thrifty 6 group with their silk items. Even though I had my crew focus on how to style a silk button up, their pieces could be very different.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

“I didn’t have much in preloved silk except for a scarf or two. So I went on a quick thrifting adventure and found this 100% silk tie for $1.00. I was going to just buy the tie and find something in my closet to wear with it but I spotted this satin slip skirt on my way to the register and it really caught my attention. I saw it was my size, so I grabbed it on a whim, paid $6.00 for it, and have already styled two outfits around it. Although it is not silk (it is a polyester satin), it has a silky feel and I really loved it with the necktie. I added a preloved white cotton blazer because it is still a bit chilly here. Our spring weather tends to arrive with the summer solstice!”

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style

“I am wearing a lipstick print blouse! Fits with your blazer Emma! This blouse is from the brand I used to work for and bought on Vinted. I love the contrasts of the tie with the silk blouse and the soft fabric with the leather skirt. I don’t think I ever wore the blouse with jeans, I think that would look great too. Silk works best, for me, worn with a thicker fabric. I picked the skirt back from the giveaway pile. Could not let it go, I should wear it more often.”

Emma of Style Splash

“I bought this Jaeger silk top on eBay years ago and used to wear it a lot for work, but I haven’t worn it for ages. When I put it on for this month’s theme, I wondered why I stopped wearing it because it feels so nice on – it’s airy and as light as a feather…perfect for a perimenopausal woman in summer! I’ve paired it with some old culottes from Asos and a quilted bag from Zara.”

Jane of Preloved-Vintage-Handmade

“In a world of polyester, always look for silk…
Silk is quality, elegance and style, it glides over the body with grace…
…natural, smooth and tactile, it complements colour and elevates cut.
These voluminous pure silk pants have metres of drapage, the construction is exquisite.
The raw silk top compliments the style adding a playful ‘genie of the lamp’ vibe…
Silk is my summer love, so sensual and sublime!”

Sally of Within a World of My Own

“My favorite silk items to thrift are scarves: they are timeless, one-size-fits-all, and usually in very good condition.  This Art Deco silk scarf was a nice pairing with another thrifted silk piece, the Talbots gold-camel lined silk skirt.  For my first foray with the Thrifty Six, I wore an outfit with all secondhand items, including hand-me-down pearl stud earrings from my mom that are several decades old.”
