How to Style Different Skirt Lengths for Fall

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

When it comes to skirt lengths, I think we can all agree there’s no one right answer. When our Ageless style group prompted different skirt lengths, I figured I could show them all. And then I wanted to talk about tweaks that make each skirt length practical and stylish for the fall season.

Quote of the day: “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” Marilyn Monroe

Let’s talk about why skirts often win in my book. Skirts are so much more forgiving than pants when it comes to fit and comfort.

What I learned from my seamstress mother is that you have many fewer fit points. Depending on the shape of the skirt, you only have the waist and length to worry about.

Plus, skirts move with you, they swish, they breathe, and they don’t have to be too girly. It’s always shocking to me how many women only wear pants in our retirement community.
Skirts offer such a great variety, especially with the countless skirt lengths.

You can layer tights underneath for warmth, add boots for practicality, or even wear leggings hidden beneath a longer style for extra comfort in the colder months.
So, from longest to shortest, here are the numerous skirt lengths with a fall tweak.

The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Insider info: If daily emails are too much, you can opt into just getting them on Saturday. I appreciate any support.

Laryssa: The Maxi Skirt

Fall tweak: A cropped sweater is the perfect proportion to a longer skirt.

Laryssa proves that maxi skirts don’t need to be saved just for summer. Her golden maxi flows beautifully, and the rich neutral color transitions perfectly into fall.
The transition from ‘very hot to getting cooler’ weather is the time to pull out a one-shoulder sweater.

While most women think they have outgrown anything with the word “cropped” in its description, I’ve shared why this is outdated thinking.
Especially for those women who have a shorter trunk.

Details:

-If a cropped sweater seems too short for you, then do what Laryssa did and layer a sheer top under it. It adds length without being too heavy.
Another option would be to wear a thinner, longer t-shirt under the cropped sweater and tuck it into the bottom. Many times, a sweater can be too bulky to tuck into something else, so this solves that dilemma.
-The perfect example of how a “straw” purse works even in the fall. The black trim and interesting shape make it seasonless.

Charlotte: The Midi Skirt

Fall tweak: If you get my emails, you saw the inspiration for this outfit. Tall boots fill in the leg area with a midi length skirt.

Not only does Charlotte’s outfit shows exactly why midi skirts and tall boots are a match made in fashion heaven, she’s proving that a floral midi skirt can transition to the colder weather.

Pro tip: Just like how colors are, in fact, seasonless, so are prints. You may get a vibe from a certain color or print, but the reality is that you can wear it anytime.

I love the dichotomy in this look, with the floral skirt being feminine and the denim vest being casual and masculine.

Details:

-Ignoring sizes is the best way to find great items when thrifting (and even in stores). This vest was an XL when I found it for my mom, and the reason is that it’s a kid’s vest. But it’s perfect for her. Make sure to check out the SW patches she added to the back yolk of it.
-My mom’s first thought was to carry a navy purse, but doesn’t this tan, suede one “Jodiefy” it for fall and make it seem so modern?

Lesley: The Knee-Length Skirt

Fall tweak: 2 words: textured outerwear. There are a ton of wonderful options that scream autumn, including velvet, suede, or corduroy. Lesley chose the corduroy.

Since a jacket or blazer is a fabulous third item for fall, pairing it with a knee-length skirt gives you marvelous proportions.

Pro tip: Seeing different lengths of jackets with an item helps since we are visual creatures. Make sure to check out the options I’ve showcased with a dress.

And if you have a knee-length skirt and it feels just a bit too short, remember you can layer a slightly longer skirt or dress under it.

Details:

-I love how the purse is a different shade of gold …almost a rust and doesn’t “match” anything else in the outfit, yet blends in perfectly.
-Lesley is rocking a variation of Mary Janes with her footwear.

Jodie: The Mini Skirt

Fall tweak: Socks are hitting the runways, and I wore a pair of taller socks with my sandals.

I find myself wearing shorter skirts in the cooler weather because they pair fabulously with tights, boots, or now, taller socks.
Instead of covering up with a longer skirt, I like the variety of covering up from the feet up.

And if wearing socks with sandals seems silly, how about the perspective that it makes our sandals wearable even in the colder temperatures?

Pro tip: Thinking a trend is only for the youngings is not a fact, but a mindset. Anytime we tell ourselves we are “too old” for something, it is the start of being too old. And even at 100 years old, you are not too old.

Details:

-I knit this blue cardigan years ago, and for today, I used different silver, sparkly brooches to hold it together. Yes, it’s off center- but that’s my fault when I pinned it…not from when I knit it.
-My arm stack is made up of different sizes and colors of bracelets
-If you recognize the brand of my skirt, yes, it is a children’s brand. But with an elastic waistband, it worked for me and was only $2 at Goodwill.

Different skirt lengths from mini to maxi

Let’s Talk Skirt Lengths and Body Confidence

What’s wonderful about this lineup is how each length suits a different personality and comfort level. Skirt lengths aren’t about age. Instead, I like to think they’re about proportion, styling, and attitude.

  • Maxi skirts feel graceful and easygoing. They’re great for movement and for those who love a boho or romantic aesthetic.
  • Midi skirts are timeless and elegant. Perfect if you prefer a balance of coverage and femininity.
  • Knee-length skirts strike that classic middle ground and work for both casual and professional settings.
  • Mini skirts exude energy and playfulness even in the colder temperatures.

Each length has its time to shine, and fall gives us a reason to pull them all out of the closet. The trick is to adjust your styling for the season like we’ve shown.

While today is all about fall tweaks with different skirt lengths, we’ve talked frequently about shoes to wear with the various skirts:
Shoes with maxis in winter
Short skirts and shoes
Knee length skirts and shoe options
Shoes with long skirts

Final Thoughts on Skirt Lengths

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times:

Fashion is about experimenting.

Don’t box yourself into thinking you can only wear one skirt length. You might surprise yourself by finding that a different skirt length can look fabulous depending on what you pair with it.

At the end of the day, skirt lengths are just a starting point. The fun begins when you start mixing and matching until you find what makes you smile when you see your reflection.
