How To Style Purple With Variety

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

There’s something so joyful and regal about purple, don’t you think? It’s one of those colors that tends to get overlooked in the everyday wardrobe, but once you dive in—you realize how versatile and fun it can be! Today’s post is all about how to style purple, and I’m thrilled to show you three very different ways to wear it: as a statement piece, through a bold print, and with chic little accents that pop.

Quote of the day: “Courage is very important. Like a muscle, it is strengthened by use.” Ruth Gordon

Many times we can worry about what to wear with a clothing item because we aren’t sure about what colors pair with it.

Instead of using my color recipe (which I recently showcased with a palm print skirt), I thought it would be fun to showcase 3 different concepts instead.
We used these three concepts when styling green earlier this year.

So maybe it will seem familiar. As I’ve learned, we need to hear something over and over before it becomes rote, so read on and consider these ideas of how to style purple.

Layering 2 dresses

1. Lesley-How to Style Purple as a Statement Piece

Let’s start with the most impactful approach—going all in.

Lesley is the perfect example here. She styled her look around a solid purple shirtdress, letting the bold hue be the star of the show. It’s a powerful color, so wearing it as a statement piece doesn’t need much else to feel special.

But of course, in a true fashionista style, she didn’t play it safe. She combined it with turquoise accents—a surprise twist that really made the outfit pop!

Not only did she pair the purple with turquoise, she layered 2 dresses together. It’s an incredible styling tool that we explored recently.

Style tip: If you’re styling purple as your main piece, try pairing it with a color that’s a little out of the ordinary. Turquoise, mustard yellow or even a soft mint green can create that “wow” factor. Don’t be afraid to mix warm and cool tones—it’s often those unusual combinations that spark the most compliments!

-This colorful clutch can add interest to any solid-colored outfit.

2. Valerie-Playing with a Purple Print

Now let’s talk about prints—an easy way to explore color without going all in.

Valerie is showing off this concept beautifully with a purple floral-print duster jacket layered over a white tee and white jeans. This is a genius way to ease into wearing purple if the color feels too bold on its own. A print allows purple to be present, but in a way that feels more approachable.

And let’s take a moment to appreciate how she styled it!

By pairing it with neutrals, you are working on how to style purple in a way that feels safe. Popping on a tunic or jacket over a column of color is a fashionista’s tool.

The white belt gave her shape and structure, and the floral-embroidered sneakers brought in a touch of whimsy. Plus, the necklace tied everything together with some gorgeous purple tones without feeling too matchy-matchy.

Style tip: If you’re nervous about purple, try starting with a print that incorporates it. Pair it with neutrals—white, gray, denim, or even camel—for a chic and balanced look. Then, if you’re feeling adventurous, pull out one of the shades from the print for your accessories or shoes.

-A brown purse is a great way to use neutrals with how-to style purple. The earth tones play well with the muted purple Valerie is showcasing.
-White sneakers are the footwear of choice for any woman. It is even better when they have some sort of decoration on the sides.

3. Jodie-Purple Accents

Now, if you’re more of a neutral dresser or you’re looking for a subtle way to add color, accents are your best friend.

In order to let the purple accents shine, I wore a neutral ribbed knit dress—which on its own would be a very simple, understated piece. This is not really my style, yet I knew I could add sass with purple accents.

I wore this purple scarf as a belt, a vintage necklace, and my statement floral shoes as well as a shiny purple purse. With this idea of how to style purple, the accessories bring the outfit to life.

Each one is small on its own (and even different shades of purple), but together they create such a cohesive, colorful look. It’s playful and intentional, and it makes a quiet outfit feel like a big fashion moment.

Style tip: Think of purple accessories as the icing on a cake. You don’t need a lot—just a few thoughtful pieces can make a big impact.
Look for purple belts, necklaces, earrings, shoes, or even just your handbag. And don’t forget about layering textures! That fringy scarf worn as a belt adds interest without feeling heavy.

Details:
-Yes, I did wear socks with my floral flats—and you know what? I loved it. It’s a quirky twist that kept me warm and added some extra texture and contrast.
BTW, these are hand-knit socks I knit years ago and I had just darned a hole in them, so I figured they deserved the spotlight. I shared them on my IG page years ago if you want more details (like the fact there are about 17,000 stitches in them).
-I used a scarf clip to hold the scarf together at my waist.

Why Purple Deserves a Spot in Your Closet

Still wondering if purple is “your color”? Let me assure you—it can be anyone’s color. With its wide range of shades—from soft lavenders and lilacs to deep plums and rich aubergines—there’s truly a version for every skin tone and personal style.

Here’s why you should try it:

  • It’s unexpected. You don’t see it as often as blue or red, so it stands out.
  • It can be bold or soft, depending on the shade.
  • It pairs well with neutrals, as well as other colors (try it with green, mustard, or even hot pink!).
  • It feels regal and creative—a combo anyone can get behind.

Whether you’re dipping your toes in with a purple purse or going all out with a statement dress, there’s a way to make it your own.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

Final Thoughts: How to Style Purple at Any Age

Purple is not just a “cool” color. It’s vibrant, expressive, and full of possibility. And the best part? There’s no one way to wear it.

So whether you’re making it your main event like Lesley, playing with prints like Valerie, or sprinkling in the fun through accents like I did, I hope this inspires you to give purple a spin this season.

Make sure you bring a personal twist to every outfit and embrace your unique style.
