How To Wear A Crochet Top In Fall

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

Crochet has been everywhere the past couple of years, including on tops, skirts, handbags, and even shoes. And while many people think of it as a warm-weather trend, I’m here to prove that it can easily transition into the cooler seasons.
Today, we’re showing you how to wear a crochet top in the fall, with three unique ways to layer and style it for warmth, texture, and personality.

Quote of the day: “We look for reasons to say yes and only say no when we have to.” James Clear

Why would we even suggest how to wear a crochet top in the fall? Because after seeing it on the runway and including it as part of the fall trends that work for us older women, I knew it would meld into my advice on layering.

Layering advice in THREE WORDS: Over and Under

Layering options with crochet top

This is how you find unique and fun ways to layer and create a larger closet from what you already own.

My crew covered a range of ideas, including both layering options. After seeing them all, it will be time to go play in your closet and learn how to wear your crochet top in the colder months.

My emails are my way to share fun and positive content with you from all of the sites I visit during the week. Sure, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Insider info: If daily emails are too much, you can opt into just getting them on Saturday. I appreciate any support.

Jodie: A Vest Over a Crochet Top

I layered a vest over my crochet top. This fits the over category of layering, yet you still get to appreciate the beauty of the crochet with the sleeves showing.

This blue embroidered vest created a fun interplay of texture on texture. You’ve got the soft, lacy feel of the crochet paired with the more structured and bold embroidery of the vest. Not only is it a mix of textures, but a great way to add a tinge of warmth to the look.

Lesley wore this vest with beige pants in the past.

Style tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment with layering over your crochet. Other examples include corset belts, or even short-sleeve jackets or tank tops (which act like a vest). It keeps things interesting and allows the beautiful crochet sleeves to shine.

I kept the shoes a light color so the look wouldn’t be so dark. They also bookend the lighter crochet top.

Details:

-I found this purse online at Old Navy, and it was called a “dark sepia”. I love it, but personally, I would call it a variation of burgundy. It looks like they’ve restocked them because the denim color was sold out previously. They are a great size. I can fit everything in it, but it’s not too big.
-Of course, I had to decorate the purse. Not only is there a skinny scarf on the end, but also a denim flower.
-Shoe choice can make or break a look. Right now, both Mary Jane styles and knit footwear are big. I found a combination of both with these from Ros—a comfy shoe company. Use code JODIE10 and check out my review, which shows the comfy details.

Charlotte: Crochet Over a Turtleneck

Charlotte’s option for how to wear a crochet top in the fall is to put it over a turtleneck.

Related post: This summer, we showcased 4 examples of layering under our crochet items when she wore a long-sleeve shirt under her crochet top. That’s another option if it’s not cold enough for a turtleneck.

This look is not only visually striking because of the color contrast, but it’s also incredibly practical for fall weather. The turtleneck adds that extra warmth that crochet by itself can’t provide, and the pop of mustard instantly says fall fashion.

It’s such a great reminder that layering doesn’t have to mean hiding your statement pieces. In fact, pairing your lighter summer tops with fall basics like turtlenecks or long-sleeve tees can be the easy way to extend your wardrobe.

Style tip: Choose a column of color under your crochet to pull it all together.

Details:

-Gold footwear goes with warmer colors so well. They blend into the mustard gold jeans instead of contrasting.
-Adding a purse in an entirely different color, Jodiefies a matchy-matchy outfit. It’s also truly modern and fun.

Lesley: Denim Jacket Over Crochet

Lesley wore her crochet tank under a denim jacket, and it’s such a timeless combination.

In Lesley’s words: “Crochet for me is rather girly and jeans are a bit guyish, so this outfit is an excellent dichotomy of style and vibes. I’ve learned to embrace these total opposites.”

Lesley also layered a white tank underneath, which adds depth and keeps it modest.

The best part about the look is how the crochet top hangs out under the jacket from all angles. This is a modern take on layering and looks amazing.

Style tip: Swap the denim jacket for a blazer or a cardigan to change the vibe.

Details:

-Notice the straw tote. Just like our crochet tops, you can transition them into fall.
-Lesley also wore light colored footwear to keep the outfit from being too gloomy. Brogues are such a fun option, as I’ve talked about in the past.

Why Crochet Works So Well for Fall

It might surprise some people, but crochet has several qualities that make it perfect for transitional weather.

  1. Breathable but Layer-Friendly:
Crochet allows air circulation, so you can layer it over or under without overheating.
  2. Adds Texture:
Fall fashion is always about textures like knits, suede, leather, and velvet. Crochet fits right in with that tactile mix.
  3. Pairs with Autumn Colors:
Even if your crochet top is white or cream, it looks stunning when paired with any fall hues.
  4. Seasonal Versatility:
Don’t put it away because it’s a “summer” item. Stop categorizing your clothes, and they will work harder for you.

Final Thoughts

Learning how to wear a crochet top in the fall comes down to one main principle, which is to layer creatively!

Whether you choose to wear it under, over, or heck, even, between your fall layers, crochet adds that wonderful dose of texture and charm that makes any outfit feel more special.

I worked hard so that the three of us each approached this idea differently to give you loads of inspiration on how to wear your crochet top even now.

Insider tip: Remember that trying new layering is building new brain pathways, which is better for you than buying something new.

I believe that’s exactly what makes style so fun. There’s never one right way to wear something. You just have to experiment, have a little fun, and see what feels most like you.

So if you’ve been packing away your crochet tops at the end of summer, I hope that this year you’ll keep them out and try one of our ideas.
