How to Wear a Red and White Striped Shirt with Other Colors and the Ageless Style Linkup
It’s fun to think about how to wear a red and white striped shirt especially with other colors. Since our theme this month thanks to Shelly, is red, white and shoes, I wanted to expand on that idea.
Quote of the day: “The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not and never persist in trying to set people straight.” Hannah Whitall Smith
After reading this quote, I realized that not everyone loves so many colors in one outfit. That’s why I’m glad, Nancy added in black to her red and white pieces since black is always a popular neutral. My mom went matchy matchy, and then I found other examples of the color combination.
The weather did not cooperate for having us showcase summer styles. So just consider this more of a spring or fall look. You could always pin these images for later.

How to Style a Red and White Striped Shirt
I love the idea of pairing red and white with yellow. It’s those two bright primary colors that seem very summery to me. Kind of like a garden flower party. Now, if the weather had been nicer, I wouldn’t have needed the jacket, so this outfit turned out very different from my original planning.
Red and White Striped Shirt
Only since retiring have I even considered whimsical clothing pieces. That’s what I consider this striped shirt with the star on the front. Sure, it’s perfect for the 4th of July, yet stars can work for anytime.
I have worn this top other times on the blog. And while I’d normally pair it with white jeans or blue jeans, I wanted to try something different today.
Scarf and Glasses
It’s only because of the weather that I even considered adding a scarf. Scarves are a great way to pull together all the colors in an outfit. Since I had to change up my outfit at the last minute and wear a jacket, this scarf did the trick. You’ve seen this scarf on all three of us worn differently in the past.
Let me just comment real quick on these glasses. I think I need to change out all of mine to the ones that are transitional like these. This pair is from one of the companies, Voogue Me, which I talked about in my online prescription glasses post. It’s SO convenient not to carry a separate pair of sunnies with me everywhere I go. Especially on the days you aren’t even sure you’ll need them. Like this day was rainy, so I wouldn’t have even thought to bring sunglasses. But obviously it was light enough for the photochromic option to kick in.
Yellow Jeans
I may be in the minority about loving different color jeans. Yet my rationale for trying out yellow jeans is because they are perfect for bringing in a summery lightness to any outfit. Sure, it’s good to have the basic neutral jeans like blue, black and white. But after you have those, why not experiment with other fun colors?
Just like how Nancy wore her red jeans. There is no age limit on colors. My suggestion if you aren’t exactly sure about this idea, is to buy an inexpensive pair to start. This yellow pair is from Maurice’s and while I used to think this store was only for young girls, I’ve now changed my mind.
Shoes
The whole theme for our Ageless style was red, white and shoes to focus on our favorite summer shoes. Personally choosing a favorite shoe is like picking a favorite ice cream….impossible. While I’m trying not to sound like a broken record about how the weather changed up my outfit, I was going to wear a cute pair of sandals.
This pair of shoes is a great neutral pair that is almost a hybrid of booties and loafers. I love the asymmetrical detail of the side panel. The funny thing is that I had ordered a pair like these in ivory months before I bought these. However, the ivory pair was a different brand and rubbed against my ankle bone so I returned them. Luckily I saw these at Target and they were WAY more comfy. And I love this color because it goes with everything.
Neutral Leather Jacket
You always read those lists of things you need in your closet. And while I love the idea, everyone is so different, that you can’t fit into a one size fits all like that. What does that have to do with this jacket? I bought this jacket while I was working 6 years ago to see if I’d wear a neutral leather jacket much.
This is a faux leather jacket and very inexpensive. To me, this is the best way to try out a style you’re not sure about. The disadvantage is that the faux leather items don’t last as long. After taking this jacket off during the day, I noticed the leather was cracking at the fold of the collar.
So it’s a good time to evaluate this item in my closet. Should I spend the money on a real neutral leather jacket? I don’t think I will because this isn’t a go to piece for me. But I’d never have known that unless I had tried it out. And I’d feel a lot more guilty about it if I’d spent a ton of money on this jacket.
