How to Wear Necklaces with Different Colors
Quote of the day: “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Albert Einstein
This quote is absolutely how we all learn, I believe. Let’s be curious and start asking why more often. Of course my husband would tell you that I ask “why” all the time. I think it’s the way I problem solve. So what does this have to do with how to wear necklaces?
Well, I’m sure all of us grew up with certain fashion rules. And they tend to stick even after all these years. Come on, I’ve heard you out there with the comments and see you at the stores. We all learned to match our clothing and accessories. Isn’t that what Garanimals helped us with?
But let’s talk about the idea of how to wear necklaces. If you match the color of the necklace to the top you are wearing, you won’t really see it. Now maybe that’s how you like it. More of a subtle detail. However, my thinking is that if I’m taking the time to put on a necklace, I want it to stand out and be a focal point to some degree.
So I came up with an experiment to showcase the exact same necklace against different colored tops. I bought all of us this necklace from my favorite local boutique, Trendz. And these photos were from our Alaska cruise this last September. In fact, if you go back to those travel clothing posts here and here, you can see these necklaces again.
After looking at these photos now, I love how we all gave such different options with our clothing. I have on all solids, while everyone else wore print pants. Yet all of the prints are different.
Jodie’s (50+) Outfit
Jeans: Banana Republic ~~Poncho: thrifted ~~Shoes: ~~Necklace: ~~Earrings:
Why I Wore This Outfit
I remember the first time I saw a blogger wear red and turquoise. And I wasn’t sure I liked the combination together. Yet once I really thought about it, I realized that many turquoise jewelry pieces have both the blue turquoise and the red coral in them.
It’s one lesson that our eyes can be trained to what looks good and what doesn’t. So if at first you don’t like a certain trend or color combination, it could be only because you haven’t seen it enough. Kind of like this red poncho and burgundy top under it. Many of my friends don’t like those two colors together, but I do.
Maureen’s (50+) Outfit
If you remember from the Alaska cruise blog posts, my best friend, Maureen joined us. So I bought her a necklace too, and had her join in on the fun.

Why Maureen Wore This Outfit
Maureen chose a burgundy, almost purple top to compliment this necklace. And I love that even with the kimono as part of the outfit, you can still focus on this accessory.
I adore the polka dot pants with the necklace because it’s almost a play on the circles of turquoise that are on the piece.
Nancy’s (70+) Outfit
Pants: H&M ~~Cardigan: ~~Top: ~~Shoes: Walking Cradles c/o (here)~~Necklace:
Why Nancy Wore This Outfit
Black is such a favorite of so many women out there. And it’s a great contrast for almost any metal against it. Since Nancy’s complexion looks good with black, I had her wear it for this exercise.
Her outfit actually incorporates a bit of print mixing. It’s not easy to see, but her blouse is black lace, so she has the texture of the lace with the striped pants.
Charlotte’s (80+) Outfit
Jeans: My mom made them….they are reversible ~~Sweater: Soft Surroundings c/o ~~Shoes:~~Necklace:
Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit
My mom chose to wear a pink sweater with her necklace. I do think pink and turquoise are an easy combination since they are both pastels.
As for the floral jeans, this is the pair she made. And they are reversible. Isn’t that cool? You can see the other side in our Alaska Shore Excursion post, when we were in Skagway. It’s a grey denim color on the reverse.
What Not to Wear
So I wanted to show an example of when it just doesn’t work to “match” your necklace to your clothing. Granted, I’m showing a print piece, but you get the drift. This dress has some turquoise in it, so you might think, “oh, I should wear a turquoise necklace”. However, the necklace gets lost with this.
What necklace would I wear with this dress? The last time I had this dress on the blog, I decorated it with a brooch at the neckline of my cardigan instead of a necklace. But I also have a bright white necklace that might look fun especially if I wore my white boots.
Tips & Tricks
One of the things this challenge taught even me, is that sometimes our perception of a piece, isn’t always how it appears in real life. What I mean by that, is when I bought this necklace and thought about styling it, in my head it’s a turquoise necklace. And it is….kinda. Yet, it’s not the turquoise that really stands out. It’s more of a silver metal necklace with a bit of turquoise on it.
I still think this post shows how it can look great with so many different colors, but I bet it would also look nice against a turquoise top. So it might be fine to “match” this necklace to the top (gasp, I can’t believe those words came out of my mouth).
The best advice I’ve figured out? When you are putting together an outfit, snap a quick selfie in the mirror. It’s a better image of how things really look.
And while we were snapping our pictures one of the entertainers on the ship, Jimmy, stopped to admire our outfits.
