Ladies Polo Shirts with Printed Pants

This quote really jumped out at me because I consider myself a dreamer in the fact that I think we can make even the most mundane items have a little pizzazz. Take the ladies polo shirts for example. They certainly aren’t an item that you are begging to go buy more, I bet.

Quote of the day: “A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.” Oscar Wilde

Yet last summer, one of my readers, Jill, requested some styling tips for this top. Maybe you have to wear it for work or an event? Even if it’s a required dress code, there’s no reason not to add some personality to it if you’d like.

And the reason it took me a year to finally get Jill this post? Because I didn’t have a polo shirt in my possession. So by the time I found one at the thrift store, I had to wait until it was summer again for us to wear them. Don’t forget to see how we styled these same tops with a skirt too.

Why I Wore This Outfit

I admit that I’m not a huge fan of polo shirts which is why I didn’t have one in my closet. But maybe if they were all cute like this floral one, I might change my mind. The one I bought is a man’s shirt, which is why it’s a little big. That’s why I went with more fitted pants and even mixed prints. It’s hard to tell in the photo, but the top is actually a black & white stripe.

How You Could Change This Outfit

I grabbed these shoes for the comfort factor since we’d be walking a lot. However, if the print shoes with the print pants is not your cup of tea, there are many shoes that would be just as comfy. I bought this brand recently, and have discovered how great they feel. Or you could opt for a fun, grey sneaker to combine style and comfort.

What Makes this Work

I wouldn’t have bought this shirt, if I’d come upon it after having our colors analyzed since black isn’t great on me. Therefore, for this post, I decided to add a scarf that did have some better coloring for my complexion. That may be the last thing you think of in the summer; however, we were in the mountains where it’s ten degrees cooler.

The other item that worked fabulously for our tour was this fashionable backpack. I picked it up at Target recently, and what a great way to be hands free. I love that these functional pieces are now made stylishly. If you wanted a more subtle one, then there is a lovely pink one. Or if the dark florals are your passion, then this one is perfect.

Interesting Tidbit

To make the men’s polo shirt less masculine, I DIYed the lace edging on it. I had this lace piece from my lace extender. After we took the photos with our lace extenders, I decided to make it shorter by removing the second tier of lace. I’ve had it since just waiting for a project, and it was perfect for the collar and cuffs of this top.

Why Nancy Wore This Outfit

Nancy bought this shirt because of the fabulous color, not that she usually loves polo shirts. Since we had to be in the car for awhile to get to this location (you can read more about that below), she chose these lightweight and stretchy pants. The shoes she admits don’t get worn much because they are clunky, yet they are super comfy for a day of walking. Besides, the sneakers matched the shirt perfectly!

How You Could Change This Outfit

If you wanted a different pair of shoes for the occasion, there are so many fun sneakers available. For example, you could always add pizzazz with a metallic pair. Just like we talked about metallics last week, they can work for any day. Of course, if you prefer to match your shoes to your pants, black sneakers could totally work. Or if you have more of a print mixing addiction, there is a fabulous pair of pink gingham sneakers that have your name on them.

What Makes this Work

I love how Nancy chose a pair of black & white pants just like my mom did. For Nancy’s outfit, her blue pops magnificently against the neutral pants, and the shoes tie it all together. I twisted her arm to wear her clear purse for one of our photo shoots. She bought this one for the Rockies baseball game so it’s easier to get through security. I have to admit, that I carry my clear purse more than I thought I would. If you don’t like seeing all your stuff inside, many of these purses come with a small, opaque bag in it. Heck, you probably have a small makeup case that would do the trick.

Interesting Tidbit

Nancy picked up these pants when she was on her Europe river cruise a couple of years ago. They were docked in Vienna, and she went into a H&M and found them. There are many items that are only sold in certain states or countries even though it’s an international company. Therefore, it’s not a bad idea to check out the franchise stores when you’re traveling.

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit

My mom has a couple of polo shirts, and chose this one because it was the last one she purchased. She also likes it best because it’s more fitted since it has spandex in it. The pants she bought at the thrift store last year and ended up lengthening them. They were originally ankle length pants, and even though I try to tell her the ankle length is stylish, she refuses to believe me.

How You Could Change This Outfit

You can see that both Nancy and my mom chose sneakers because we knew we’d be walking a lot for this day. The last time we showcased a summer walking event, there were a couple of sandals involved. If you’d prefer a sandal for this outing, then an espadrille sandal or a small wedge sandal would also work.

What Makes this Work

We all know that black & white is a fabulous neutral and goes with everything. So if you have a shirt that you aren’t sure what to pair it with, black & white is usually a safe choice.

Interesting Tidbit

Both this purse and scarf are from 30 years ago. My mom used a scarf to lengthen the straps make her purse a cross-body one. This could be a great idea to use some of your scarves in the summer months. Tie them around the handles of a purse so you can be hands free. Even though the purse and scarf are old, they are a perfect example of how items come around over and over. I talked about straw bags as a summer trend recently.

Tips & Tricks

If you have a polo shirt in your closet that doesn’t get much love, pair it with something that is modern and fun. We tried the same idea last year with our t-shirts.

One of the reasons I thought print pants would be a great options is because most polo shirts are solid colored. So the print pants pull the focus down to the pants instead of on the polo shirt.

The other thing to consider when you are wearing these shirts is how they fit. So many of them tend to be boxy and non fitted. You might pick up some ideas in my video where I discussed 3 ways to make our shirts fit better.

Vail Alpine Garden tour with ladies polo shirts
How to wear Ladies polo shirts for a modern look

We took a field trip to Betty Ford’s Alpine Park for these photos. Nancy said this was on her bucket list, so we thought we’d make a trip up here before her month long sabbatical while she is moving houses.

It was an amazing place to visit, if you’re ever in Vail. They have guided tours, which is what we took, certain days of the week for a nominal cost. The guy we are posing with in the above photo is Nick, the director of the park, and just won an award for the park. They call him a “rock star”—LOL!
