Leggings for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: With a Long Cardigan

Quote of the day: “A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.” Joan O’Brien

The long cardigan is also a nice companion to the leggings.  By long cardigan, I’m implying one that covers the tush (and possibly even half the thighs).  I’m not entirely sure why I’m not comfortable having my rear exposed in my leggings, yet it’s okay with my skinny jeans….possibly the pockets make all the difference?  Another way to feel more covered up is to wear tall boots with your leggings!  Either way, it usually ends up being a nice proportion since the leggings are on the tighter side and the cardigan has more volume.  Don’t forget to check out Leggings with a Tunic (here)

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I bought this cardigan to wear more as a jacket or coat, but it’s perfect for this post and adding the belt gives it some structure!  I added the scarf because I usually crave some color in my outfits!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: This cardigan is perfect for pairing with a bright colored t-shirt.  Do you recognize it from the black & white series?  We even used the process of layering 2 necklaces!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: These mountain boots are another great footwear that works perfectly with leggings!  Pairing them with the plaid shirt makes you almost believe she could go out hiking…ha ha!

Thanks for visiting my styling blog!  Do you feel the need to have your tush covered when wearing leggings?

I found some other long cardigans to wear:

  • Long cardigans look great with leggings, and all the looks feel more pulled together than with just the tunic.

    • I totally agree…I so struggle with the tunic looking “sloppy” Thanks for stopping by Lydia!

  • Love the scarf such a great multi-tasking piece!

Leggings are a great addition to any wardrobe when styled appropriately as you all have done.

  • These show a great variety as they all have such different silhouettes. Yours looks so much like a dress and is fabulous! I love the bright tee underneath and the two tone look and marbling , what a fabulous sweater. And finally you have to love a vibrant red one paired with plaid! Great job all on three looks!

  • In love with your look today! I totally agree with your comment about feeling comfortable showing your behind in skinny jeans vs. leggings. Every time I put my skinny jeans on my husband goes “Are those skinny jeans or leggings?” The line is definitely blurred between the two now. My latest HUE leggings purchase actually have a ‘fake’ button to go along with the ‘fake’ zipper. Of course, they have back pockets too. No wonder my husband is so confused!

    • LOL….your husband is confused because really….is there a difference, besides the label/tag? Maybe just the amount of spandex and that’s something you feel more than see!!

  • Yes absolutely. Leggings should never be worn as pants in my opinion. My favorite of these 3 is the 50s look. My favorite of your last post was the 70s. You all look fabulous!

    • Thanks for reading Sylvia!! Yes…I’m sure I read your blog on leggings before I even owned a pair….seeing the young girls wearing them put me off at first. It just took figuring out how to switch it up (and your wonderful opinions) to get my head around the trend!

  • Leggings are great with a long cardigan! I also love them with a sweaterdress. Everyone looks great!

    • A sweaterdress…..why didn’t I think of that? Great inspiration…thanks! (I just started wearing leggings…I thought they were silly a couple years ago)
