Adding Denim to Your Little Black Dress

Quote of the Day: “Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burdens behind us.” Samuel Smiles

The little black dress (or as many call it, LBD) has been touted as the necessary dress in every woman’s closet.  I’m not saying I totally agree with this statement, but I’d bet money that most of you have at least one hanging in your house!  Since the majority of females think it’s the “it” dress, I’ll show  some ideas how the three of us generations would wear it for our established three different categories.

We’ll start with the “really?” category first.  Why would I wear this for a casual event was the question I received from both Nancy and my mother.  And I replied, “Why not?”  To casual up the little black dress I matched it with denim— I actually didn’t realize I styled the three of us so much alike with denim until I put the pictures together–at least  I had some variety by using three different denims (a shirt, a vest and a jacket).

50’s LBD:  I must admit, I’ve always loved the “tie the blouse in front” look and luckily for me I’m seeing it used much more lately!

60’s LBD: Nancy gets a lot of use out of this jean vest.  I talked her into the red shoes in order to add some vibrant color to the mix.

70’s LBD:  My mom’s denim jacket was actually purchased out of the boy’s department.  Who says we’re limited to only shopping in the women’s department?

Even though we consider wearing our little black dresses for the dressier events, I think by adding a touch of denim they can work for some casual times too!

Would you wear your LBD for a relaxed look?  Thanks for your thoughts!

Denim is a great choice to add a casual vibe to the LBD. I’m thinking you could also try khaki, camouflage, checks, plaid, a long sweater and a scarf.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think the camo would be especially fun, Kathleen. It’s so funny how it has become so popular among the fashionistas!!

  • I just bought a LONG LBD. I am thinking of new ways to wear it- I love the denim, I will have to try it with my denim vest. I love the red shoes to0!

    • Thanks Michele…I actually think the long LBD is brilliant…I might have to get one!!

  • Thanks 4 linking up to Top of the World Style. I like that you show fashion for women 40+,40++, 40+++

  • The outfits you’ve put together look great. I don’t have a LBD as such, but a skirt and top work in the same way. Not sure if I’d wear it for casual as the material is floaty and the skirt is flared.

    • It’s actually nice to hear someone who doesn’t have a LBD!! The contemporary thought is dichotomy of items, so the flowy flared skirt might look great casual paired with a black t-shirt and denim vest? I must admit, I’ve been much more adventuresome in my dressing since starting this blog (and it’s fun)!!

  • Great post! So much you can do with a LBD! I also have a long maxi LBD 🙂

  • I always love a LBD! Great post and love your including different ages. Perfect! Thanks so much for supporting Fun Fashion Friday!

    • It’s funny because I didn’t really love mine until this series of post…I would just think of it as my “funeral dress”. Thanks for reading!!!

  • Ladies , this is all your best look yet !!!! Very creative and lovely on each of you . Black in the summer is sometimes hard to pull off but you all did a beautiful job in adding jewelry and tops to the mix . Thank you for joining us at Wearing with Wisdom .

  • Who would have thought it was so easy to make a LBD casual? Love this!

    • And that’s probably why everyone loves the LBD so much?

  • dan

You never go wrong wearing a LBD! I find it simple but perfect!!

  • I love any dress with a chambray shirt , vest or jacket. I love that you showed the same colors in the outfit with all different options. I happen to own all three but for others it gives them an option. The versatility of these three pieces would make a great blog post or a few…

  • Chris

The 70s model is your Mom? Wow, she is incredibly gorgeous.

  • lorena

I’ve always thought jeans and a black dress can never go wrong.
If you need to be a little more formal all you have todo is remove the jacket and voilá! you’re set to go.

  • I rave about black dresses. The H&M one is great. There is no end to the ways a black dress can be styled. You and he girls look happy and casual!

    • Well of course you like it because that’s what you’re wearing!! You know what they say? Great minds…. (should’ve worn my tennies….hmmmm, may try that for the fall version next year)

  • MaryAnne

Thanks for suggesting denim with a LBD, Jodie. You all look fabulous! There are a couple in my closet. I thought no way could I wear casual. Thanks for inspiring me.

    • Glad I could inspire you!! At first I thought it was silly, but it could be especially useful when travelling and you have limited clothing options!!

  • I’m all for styling a LBD with denim! Your look is my favorite this time around!

    • Thanks Darlene…I have to admit, the LBD is not my first choice when wanting to put on a casual dress, but never say never, right?
