Little Black Dress–Summer 2: For a Work Day

Quote of the Day: “After the verb to love, to help is the most beautiful verb in the world.” Anonymous

The oh, so famous little black dress (LBD) that is hanging in your closet as we speak, continues to be the topic of the day.  Why wear it only for the parties (or funerals)?  I figure you might as well get some good use out of it and make it “work” for you (bad pun, I know).  So we’ll pull the little black dress out of our closets and make it office appropriate for the summer months.  The first in this series took us out of our comfort zone by styling it for a casual day (here).

50’s LBD: Since black is not a great looking color on me, I usually reserve this dress for funerals.  I tried to add some color with the necklace, but since most office wear tends to be more subdued I kept the vest neutral.  This vest came from which sells used clothes and all their items are priced at $15.

60’s LBD: If you need to keep things lightweight in the summer, a nice, sleeveless top can work wonders over your black dress.  Nancy’s top has a slight opening in the back, so wearing the dress underneath  has the added benefit of keeping her bra from showing.

70’s LBD: My mom is always cold like me, so a jacket is not too warm even for the summer months.  And as for this bracelet, you thought you’d seen all of my mother’s owl accessories…silly you!

Have you ever worn your LBD to work?  How did you camouflage it?

Here’s some more little black dresses in the $50 price range.  (The Express dress may seem short for some of you, but if you’re vertically challenged like me, it’ll be just above the knee—so says the review)

I know what you mean about black on pale ladies, especially those of a certain age. That said, I think you all look good in black. The neckline on your dress allows your pretty skin to show and the necklace is a pretty splash of color.

      Thanks Kathleen!

  • Jodie, always love your fashion posts! Thanks for joining us at #MidLifeLuv, we’re very glad to have you.

  • Hi Jodie, What a fantastic post. Proving that advancing age does not mean sloppy wardrobe choices. I’m so glad I found your blog. A beautiful trio of stylish ladies! XX

    • Thanks Samantha…that’s exactly what I’m trying to establish!!!

Oh darn it! Forgot to mention #MidLifeLuv – what is WRONG with me this weekend!

It would be great to see more people dressing like this in the workplace. However, it seems that everyone is going for the ‘dress down’ look more and more now (can only speak re the UK), and youngsters just coming into the workplace don’t seem to have much sense of looking smart like this. I guess it is ok for some workplaces but it is nice to see front-line workers looking smart and professional. Strangely, I noticed yesterday at the car dealership where I get my car fixed, ALL the staff looked amazing! The young men and women were dressed like they had just walked off the pages of a magazine. Since the dealership had a major revamp of their showroom and workshops, the staff have obviously been told to ‘dress to impress’. I do prefer my money being taken by people that are dressed well!!!!! Lol!

    • I agree wholeheartedly that we should be dressing better…not just the workplace. Somehow life got so very casual and I’m not sure it’s an entirely good thing. And sometimes I agree with the “when in Rome” concept, but for this I’m going for the “we need to be good role models” idea! Besides it really does affect your mood!!

  • Everyone here looks great in their black dresses. Morning, afternoon, evening, all work for my LBD too. Pops of colour like you have done are favourite ways of adding spice, and illogical shoes. “This does not compute,” as Robot would say. Great bling all around.

  • The vest and necklace offer a summery safari feel, but if you only keep that dress around for funerals, maybe it should go! (plus, you don’t have to wear black to a funeral anyway).
    Chic on the Cheap

    • Really…I didn’t realize, but I guess if I wear subdued colors…that would be ok for a funeral? Maybe I will say goodbye to it!

  • I always make sure to have a LBD for every season and type of occasion…you can never go wrong. Thanks for sharing via #MidLifeLuv

    • You have more than I do…I only have 2 but I’m thinking of getting rid of one of them! 🙂

  • I love a LBD. I also am new to your blog and love how you feature fashion for three different age groups. My mom is in her 70s and is still one of the most fashionable women I know! Kudos!

Visiting from the #funsummerfinds link up. 🙂

    • Jamie….it’s so nice to “meet” you! I think having a fashionable mom is the best, besides it probably helped us be who we are!! Thanks for stopping by!!!

  • I, like you, am not a huge fan of wearing black next to my face. I do have several LBDs and I often add pops of colour just as you have here.

    I adore that owl bracelet!

    • It is funny how so many people love their LBD, and I really only have it for funerals!! Maybe I’ll try to wear it more…

  • I use to collect owls as a child and am getting a kick out of the resurgence in jewelry right now, but have not indulged. Love Mom’s bracelet and the bright blue jacket. I just bought a utility vest in the tan and may just have to try it with a black dress now! So many outfits to try , not enough days, lol!

    • OMG…that’s totally what I think when I go into my closet. I’m just the opposite of “i have nothing to wear”….i’m always thinking I have too much to wear!! If you need more owl things, I can give you mom’s address…ha ha!!

  • I am all about the black dress, but it is nice to change it up sometime! Thanks for adding your flair to the #funsummerfinds linkup!

  • Your mom’s look is my fave…and that owl bracelet is da bomb!!

    • Thanks Darlene..I love that I put her in blue (blue is her fave color)! It’s funny about the owls, because she’s been collecting them for over 20 years…and now they are so popular and everywhere (and she doesn’t need anymore!!)
