Do You Look Longer with a Tunic over your Maxi?

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

Maxi Skirts for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: With a Tunic

Quote of the day: “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” Warren Bennis

On the quest to find the best ways to wear our maxi skirt when the temperatures are a bit colder, I wondered about pairing them with tunics. My thought process was since the skirts are longer, maybe our top portion should be too!

Trust me when I say this is all new territory for me. Before I started blogging, I didn’t have a tunic in my closet, and I certainly wouldn’t have worn a maxi. Luckily my judgment on how to style clothing has certainly changed. I’m definitely more open to new ways & styles, and I only hope that I inspire you to be too! I feel very lucky that Mireille, our blogette, from the last post, is happily joining us again. Isn’t it fun to see how other “real” women style their maxis for the winter with an untucked tunic!

And let’s talk functionality! It seems like a maxi skirt would be so smart in the cold weather. Just think of all of the layering that could be happening beneath it!

The 3 of us are all wearing the same maxi skirts that we did in the first post when we styled them with a long coat, here. I incorporated some variety with this tunic category, by belting my tunic but not mom’s & Nancy’s. How would you do it?

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I decided to belt my tunic for this outfit. I watched a video once where the stylist admonished belts especially around a unfitted shirt. And I can see her point in these photos. The tunic tends to bunch up! But in my defense, I wanted to add in some other colors by using this belt. Does the bunching up bother you guys?

I do have to wear heels with this skirt. Either that or I need to shorten it a tad. I figured I’d try it long for awhile and see how it works. It seems like such a dressy skirt, that I’d be more likely to wear heels with it anyways. I call these my “tuxedo” heels. I fell in love with them years ago at an Ann Taylor’s store, and I used to wear them at the office all the time!

There is a rule of “3’s” that are being taught. When adding in a different color with your accessories, then make sure you have at least 3 pieces of that color. So that would work with what I am wearing since my earrings, belt & shoes are all black & white. Then does it count that my glasses, lipstick & purse are all red?

Look at those beautiful mountains in the background! And you thought Denver was full of snow and cold in January!!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy just wore this tunic with her Christmas Story about holidays of the past, here! I wasn’t the only one who thought it looked terrific on her, so I thought we’d try it with her maxi skirt too!

Since Nancy’s maxi is straight with no flair to it, I thought that a straight & fitted tunic would work with it!

And then since everything else was long, we chose 2 long necklaces! The red & black necklace isn’t very well weighted and would swing around and get stuck which you can sort of see in the one photo above this one. I’m not sure how to fix this?

We didn’t layer the tunic over a turtleneck this time, but Nancy does have on a camisole under it! And peeking out of the slit in the skirt, are her grey boots!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: Mom’s tunic that we picked for this post is a crocheted long sweater. Of course we had to layer under it for these colder days, so we put a matching turtleneck under it! Needless to say, there is also a long underwear top under the turtleneck, too!! LOL, mom is always cold like I am!

I picked out the dark brown ankle boots with this look to try to ground the outfit and not have it be too light in color for the wintertime.

Since the boots were darker, I added in dark earrings and a necklace with dark beads. This necklace was super long, so we tied a knot in the middle of it, in order to shorten it a little.

We actually tried belting this outfit at first, but I thought the sweater was too bulky and made mom look wonky!

Mireille (Blogette): I love the detail on this maxi of Mireille’s! And, of course, she added a scarf!! What a perfect addition for the colder months!!

In Mireille’s words: “I added a scarf for color ($1 find at a yard sale and my favorite!). Old navy tunic from this year, I really like how it is longer in the back and love that color! Think I will be wearing this this Sunday!”
