Magic Style: What Top to Wear with Culottes
I wanted to break the rules in what top to wear with culottes. In fact, culottes aren’t all that different from the midi skirts we showcased recently. And when we showed our midis with different tops, we tended to like the tops somewhat more fitted and the top was 1/3 of the proportion of the entire look.
Quote of the day: “There is a wonderful, almost mystical, law of nature that says three of the things we want most-happiness, freedom, and peace of mind-are always attained when we give them to others. Give it away to get it back.” John Wooden
Yet, as we have all heard, breaking the fashion rules can be a good thing. So I decided to approach what top to wear with culottes in the opposite direction. Instead of pairing my wide, flowy culottes with a short, fitted top, I did the opposite.
Does it work? You tell me what you think because as I try to reiterate, style is very individual. It’s not a look, I would have liked or worn many years ago. Yet I think it’s very artsy.
I called it magic style because after putting on this outfit, I magically felt like an artist. Creative, colorful, and fun.
Lesley and my mom styled their culottes more traditionally yet with a modern twist.
Pants: Peach~~ Tunic: ~~ Shoes: Kelly & Katie~~ Earrings: ~~Scarf (on purse): Gibby’s Frillery~~ Purse: Charming Charlies
I even thought I’d showcase the tunic belted as an option. It makes the tunic less flowy, but in this case, I don’t love it. In my opinion, it breaks up the vertical print of the tunic. I should have shown it from the side too, so you could see how it pulled the tunic fabric in.
What do you think? Could a belt work?
Belts have their place but maybe a thinner, looser belt would not be as severe? As for this look, I prefer it without a belt. Besides, in the hundred-degree heat, let me tell how hot a belt like the black one can be, haha.
Again, I could ask the crazy question of does it make me look fat? I have finally come to the realization that my goal isn’t to be thin or dress to look thinner. My goal is to enjoy my clothes and have fun with my style. Life is WAY too short to worry if an outfit makes me look fat.
What Top to Wear with Culottes
This colorful tunic is one that Lesley, my mom, and I all have. In fact, you can see how we styled them in the past (all 3 linked below). It’s a sheer material which is nice for the summer, and very colorful.
It’s quite an interesting piece in that the hem is asymmetrical and it has ties (which I tied in the back under the back panel). All three of us have done different things with the ties in the past. Lesley cut them off and my mom tied them in back over the back panel.
Even though the tunic is sheer, I only wore my bra under it. Granted it’s a light blue Ruby Ribbon demiette bra that is almost like a sports bra. (More about the comfortable bras I wear here). Sure, you can see through the tunic to my midriff, but what do you really see??

Accessories
Since the tunic has a lot of personality, I kept the accessories somewhat minimal, at least for me. I only wore earrings. Yet, I wanted them to add to the statement of the tunic, not get lost, so I wore some fabulous shoulder scraping earrings that my friend, Judy, made me.
I did choose a colorful purse and even made it more colorful with 2 scarves tied to it.
BTW, these are the new Gibby’s scarves that are longer. You can get 20% off through my link. I doubled each of them up so they would fit the purse.
Insider tip: For those of you who struggle with stying your scarves, start adding them daily to your purses. It’s a great way to wear what you have, and it’s not as front and center as when they are around your neck. And don’t limit yourself to just one scarf on your purse!!!
Culottes
Culottes are not something you see on everyone. Although for those of you living in the hotter states, I have to make a case for them. They can be just as cool as a skirt with the airflow, yet, you are still wearing pants.
I’ve had these culottes for years. They are the brand Peach and I love that they have these snaps, so I can create a slit or not.
Peach has clothes for the gym to work, and through my link, you can get $10 off. While their clothes aren’t inexpensive, they do have great sales from time to time.
Insider tip: Culottes like these are ideal to wear for pedicures.
Heels to Flats
I thought these sandals mirrored the colors of the tunic almost perfectly. But you can see in the other photo how I switched to a pair of flat, black sandals after the photos for our exploration of the town of Florence this day.
Either pair would work depending on what you were doing and what vibe you wanted to get across.
My Goal
Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size, or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what others think.
My hope is that you get ideas and inspiration from Charlotte, Lesley, and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
