Maxi Skirts for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Tied Up
So the maxi skirts are skirts….duh? But can you make it something a little different? I say yes. So this post was dedicated to try to change things up. Now you might be a person who likes an item for it’s intended use. Thus the post where we styled the same maxis with a t-shirt (here) or a topper (here) could be more to your liking. But if you’re adventuresome and crave a little variety, then here’s a thought! Make your maxi skirt either a dress or more of a midi! I’ll give more details below in the outfit descriptions!
Quote of the day: “The best gift you can give is your presence, your time, your love. A gift from your heart with no thought of reward.” Rachel Ridder
Let’s talk about one variation that I didn’t show here in the blog series. If you have a maxi skirt, yet don’t love the length but the fit and material is wonderful, you could always cut many inches from the bottom hem and make it a regular length skirt!
As for the maxis themselves, I expounded on the advantages and disadvantages of the item on Margaret Manning’s Sixty + Me website! Tell me how you feel about the maxis in the comments below!
Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit:
One variation for your maxi can be as a bathing suit cover up. Since I was not going to the beach any time soon, I decided to try mine out as a dress. Considering my skirt didn’t have a slit up the side, this was a reasonable & modest experiment.
I could’ve worn a strapless bra and left off the cardigan, however, it was raining this day—thus I was able to add a little extra color! I definitely felt the need to add a belt due to the volume of material. It’s really not my favorite outfit worn this way, but I’m glad I tried it!
I’ve been reading that choker necklaces are making a comeback. I’ve always liked the look—you?
Dress/Skirt: Design History-thrifted (similar here sorta in the same color scheme or here with smaller stripes)~~Cardigan: Boden (similar here)~~Shoes: Simply Vera (similar here beaded instead of gold but a great deal!)~~Belt: (similar here)~~Necklace: (similar here)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Bracelet: (similar here)
Nancy’s (60’s) Maxi Skirts Outfit:
For Nancy’s variation, we turned the slit to the side of the skirt and tied up the ends of the slit into a knot! I thought it was perfect to add a shirt that had a knot on the side also! By wearing the skirt this way, it can be easier to walk, climb the stairs and not have it get caught up in your rolling chair!
Nancy got these shoes specifically to use for her touring around on her trip this year! They are a great walking shoe, but I decided there is no need to save them just for her trips. Since they are metallic, they’ll go with everything!
And I added a little turquoise to the mix with her jewelry—small but fun, right?
Skirt: Old Navy (here)~~Top: Apt 9 (similar here very close but no side tie)~~Shoes: Ecco (here)~~Necklace: (similar here only a couple left)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Bracelet: (similar here)
Charlotte’s (70’s) Maxi Skirts Outfit:
And then mom’s variation of the maxi is not extremely different than Nancy’s, except we tied up the other side—the side without the slit. This leaves the skirt a little longer, but still provides an asymmetry detail!
Mom bought the shirt in Guatemala on her Panama Canal cruise—doesn’t it have the perfect vibe for wearing with a maxi?
Skirt: Old Navy (here)~~Top: (similar here in other colors besides white or here in white)~~Shoes: Anne Klein (similar here with lots of bling)~~Earrings: (similar here)~~Bracelet: (similar here)
