For our monthly prompt with Where Bloggers Live, the idea of our favorite movies came up. And who doesn’t love a good movie?? So not only am I sharing my top 5 flicks, but also a couple of cute stories that go with a couple of them.
Quote of the day: “There are times when dreams sustain us more than facts.” Helen Fagin
Maybe the quote is the reason that some movies speak to us so much. For me, a movie is a feel-good reaction. I’m not a fan of scary or dark movies. I want happy, and I want to be entertained! How’s that for being high-maintenance?
So here’s my list of my top 5 favorite movies in no particular order.

Finding Nemo
Funny story about this movie. It was the first “real” movie that Rob and I went to on a date. When I say “real”, that’s because our second time to get together was a movie, but it wasn’t our cup of tea (it was A Mighty Wind and I know some of my friends loved it. But ugh, we just couldn’t get into it).
Anyways, we saw this movie advertised and Rob asked if I would like to go.
The funny party? I said sure, and can I ask my mom. You see, I knew she would love this movie, and I was being a wonderful daughter.
Of course, Rob didn’t mind having Charlotte join us, but we laugh about it now. “Yes, I’m a 38-year-old adult and I’ll go to a movie with you as long as I can bring my mother.”
Ironically, my mom fell asleep during it too!!
But we just adored this movie. It was heartwarming, it was funny and we talked about it for days and days. Even now, we will recount snippets from it like “Mine, mine”.
A Sound of Music
Ahhh, the classic The Sound of Music. I remember being about 10 years old and outside playing in the front yard when my mom came out and said to get ready, we are going to go see a movie.
Of course, I wanted to know which movie and my mom said “The Sound of Music”. Now that’s not a title that any 10-year-old is going to be excited about, right? So I said, “No, I’m not going.”
Needless to say, I lost that argument and was dragged off to the movie theater. I sulked and cried until about 10 minutes into the movie when I leaned over and asked my mom if we could see it again.
Humpf…a great example of when a mother knows best, eh?
Titanic
There’s no great personal story that goes with seeing this movie. But it’s one of those that I just love to watch over and over.
What makes it such a great movie in my eyes? The fact that every time, I want him to drag himself up on that piece of floating wood even though I know that’s not how the movie goes.
One reason I really think it resonates with me is the fact that young women at that time were so restricted in what they could do and their goals. And yet she bucks the system. I was always such a rule follower (you might never realize that now), so I think it inspires me in that way.
The Princess Bride
This is a movie that I first saw my junior year in college at the big chemistry auditorium on campus.
I knew nothing about it and only decided to go because one of my friends twisted my arm.
Well, if you’ve seen it, then you understand. AND what made it even better was the fact that the auditorium full of students participated in many of the lines.
Can you say, “Inconceivable” or “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die” to name a few? These lines were said by hundreds of kids all at the same time. It was kinda like live theater.
I’m pretty sure I went back to the movie a couple of times while it was still playing on campus because yelling with everyone just made it so fun.
BTW, this then inspired me to read the book of the same name (as I discussed in my favorite books post) . It’s hard to believe but the book is even better.
Shawshank Redemption
You may not consider this movie uplifting and happy, but it’s one of those I can watch over and over.
I think what I like about it is how basically the good guy wins. And all of the obstacles he had to overcome.
