Winter fashion often gets a reputation for being drab and dull, but neutral winter outfits don’t have to be boring! In fact, neutrals can be the perfect canvas for chic, stylish, and creative outfits.
Quote of the day: “Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all.” Thomas Szasz
I wanted to work with 3 different concepts for these neutral winter outfits that you could use with any color. Because my mother was out for the day, my husband stepped in to showcase his look, showing how style can work this way for males or females.
The 3 ideas are to stick to a monochromatic look with a neutral, mix your neutrals, or add a pop of color to your neutral winter outfits. 3 options, and 3 ways to make it stylish and fun.
As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chocked full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.

1. Lesley-The Power of Monochromatic
One of the easiest ways to look effortlessly put together is by wearing a monochromatic outfit. A single color palette can be one of the easiest options and makes it look like you spent hours styling your look—even if it was a quick decision!
Lesley opted for a monochromatic ivory look after finding this amazing swing coat while thrifting. She did trim out the shoulder pads so they wouldn’t be so big, but it creates a glamorous look since there is movement when she wears it.
Underneath, a knit turtleneck sweater in a matching hue keeps things soft and inviting. The key to making a monochromatic outfit work is to play with textures—notice how the knit scarf, the plush coat, and the structured handbag add depth and interest, even though they are all in the same color family.
Pro tip: Don’t obsess that the colors don’t match exactly in a monochromatic look. It’s all about the same shades and values that tie it all together.

Details: While the boots are taupe, they fit in with the monochromatic ivory look fabulously. All three of us showcased ways to wear taupe boots in the past.
I love how Lesley added the gold pin to keep the scarf in place, and the ivory turban hat is so classic.
Pro Tip: If you’re new to monochromatic outfits, start with neutral colors like beige, cream, or gray. They are easy to layer and accessorize without feeling overwhelming.
We’ve dabbled with monochromatic beige looks in the past when the temperatures were warmer.

2. Rob-Layering Neutrals
If wearing all one color isn’t your style, another fabulous way to embrace winter-neutral outfits is by layering different neutrals together.
Rob shows off an outfit with grey jeans, a white with a black striped shirt, and a taupe tweed sweater.
Again, let me point out that the mix of textures is key. Rob’s knit scarf adds contrast against the structured button-down shirt and has a smoother texture than the tweed cardigan.
Gray jeans anchor the outfit, offering a relaxed yet polished vibe. Since neutral colors work well together, pairing brown with gray is a great way to break up the look while keeping things cohesive. The subtle blend of warm and cool neutrals makes the ensemble dynamic without feeling overpowering.

Even the boots have 2 different textures on them creating a textural wonderland.
BTW, I hand-knit this sweater for Rob years ago.
Pro Tip: When layering neutrals, don’t be afraid to mix warm and cool shades. Tan, brown, and beige work beautifully with gray, white, and cream. The contrast keeps the look interesting and modern.

3. Jodie-Adding a Pop of Color
For those who love neutrals but still crave a little personality in their outfits, the best solution is to incorporate pops of color through accessories. A colorful scarf (or 3), statement boots, or even bold glasses can bring a neutral outfit to life without overpowering the look.
For my look, I created a neutral outfit in black and white. And then had fun with my blue boots and a bunch of scarves worn together.
While the base of the outfit is entirely neutral, the real show-stopper is the blue pops of color that grab your attention.

Details:
-I mixed 3 different scarves around my neck. Look closely to see the turquoise woven one, the blue & white print one that is wrapped, as well as a turquoise print one hiding between the two.
The 3 of us have layered scarves in the past. If you have a bunch of scarves, it’s such a great way to get more wear out of them.
-The sweater tights are an easy way to wear shorts in the winter along with tall boots. I recently expanded on this subject because it tickles my fancy.
-I hand knit these wristlets with the Lion Brand Shaggy Chic yarn when I worked with the brand. Here is the free pattern that is easy to knit up and so fun to wear.
Pro Tip: This is the best way to dip your toe into a “colorful outfit.” By adding color to your neutral winter outfits, you are creating a unique look. A bright scarf, a colorful handbag, or even bold shoes can make all the difference without committing to an entire bright outfit.

Final Thoughts on Neutral Winter Outfits
Neutral winter outfits don’t have to be basic or dull. Whether you love the chic elegance of a monochromatic look, the depth, and sophistication of layered neutrals, or the vibrancy of neutral outfits with a pop of color, there’s a way to make neutrals work for your personal style.
Remember, bring a personal twist to every outfit and embrace your unique style.
