Outfits Inspired by TV Shows & Ageless Style Group

Quote of the day: “I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Christopher Reeve

This week we decided to get a little crazy and see how what we watch can inspire our clothing style or choices. We started with a character from the movies, and now we will explore television. (And isn’t this green wall behind us somewhat like the green screens of tv? I thought it’d be so perfect for the photo shoot.)

The entire idea for this theme is thanks to Daenel from our Ageless Style Group, so make sure to check out all of the wonderful women in our group including our co-host, Patti. Their links are below and it’s always so interesting to see what other people choose as inspiration. And if you’re a blogger, feel free to join the link up too.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: My husband and I don’t actually watch much tv anymore except for HGTV.

However, if you’ve ever seen Erin Napier from Home Town, I actually used her as my inspiration for my hair cut last summer. Except her hair always looks better than mine, but oh well!

I also love her clothing style when she isn’t doing demolition. She has such a creative eye  for her home decor and clothing style, including her love of most colors. Now I realize she wouldn’t wear tights because she lives in Mississippi, but I know she’d rock ones like this if she visited Denver.

I’m not sure how much you check out the “similar here” items that I list for each of our outfits at the end of each of our segments?  I do want to point out that much of this outfit is thrifted.

In fact, I’ve worn this dress a couple of times on our #thriftedchicstylechallenge on Instagram to try to get some wear out of it. I have these fun items in my closet, and I’m pushing myself to wear them more.

One of the reasons I grabbed this purse for the outfit, besides the fact that it matches, is because it’s a wine bottle holder.

This purse made an appearance last year, as I showed the insides to it. I thought it’d be so appropriate to be carrying a purse that was really meant to be something else. You wouldn’t believe it, but I found one just like it  in the “similar here” below for the purse. At B,B & B, no less!

If you’ve ever seen the show, Home Town, both Erin and her husband are so great about reusing items. I always love that part of the show, along with the fact that there is very little drama on their episodes. You can really tell they love each other and they are so fun to watch.

The other item I need to talk about is my sweater. I knitted this one within the last couple of years. The yarn is from a local woman, who distributes it once it’s made in Ireland. If you’re a knitter, her yarn is called Black Water Abbey Yarns and she even has this exact pattern still available. Attaching the button to keep it closed was my addition to the design and I was lucky to find a button in my stash that matched so well .  If you happen to look through her patterns, you might even see a familiar face on some of them!

I didn’t talk much about the accessories, but I chose a totally different color scheme. I thought the pink accessories went nicely with the green and gold. Since Erin from Home Town, is a designer, she incorporates many colors into her rooms and outfits too.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: For Nancy’s outfits inspired by tv shows, she picked Mary Tyler Moore.

Since Mary Tyler Moore was a single working woman, the tv program was so easily relatable for Nancy. She told me the story that this was her favorite show when she was younger. In fact, she even stayed home from a social outing just to be able to watch it once (you know, before taping shows was around). But what Nancy did end up realizing is that the tv show didn’t trump going out having fun with her friends.

Therefore, this outfit is inspired by one of the television opening styles where Mary Tyler Moore throws her hat in the air. I actually had never seen the show or this opening, so I had to google it. Aren’t we so lucky that we have this information at the tips of our fingers nowadays? (And now that song will be playing in my head ALL day)

Let me point out the hat that Nancy is wearing. It’s actually right in style because the berets and baker boy’s hats are being shown everywhere. Both of these kinds of hats are easier to travel with than the normal fedoras, if that’s an issue for you. And both versions can be found for under $20, with this beret and this baker boy’s hat.

Another advantages of the computer at our finger tips is the online shopping and blogging part of it.

I was talking with a friend how there are many more options for most sizes now, and I do believe much of that is because of blogging. There are so many bloggers in every size and shape, that retailers seem to be noticing.

For example the wide calf boots. It still may not be easy to find them in every store, but online is a treasure trove of options. I realize many of you are concerned with online shopping, but as long as you know the return policy, the process can be so helpful. I know that DSW has easy returns, along with Target. Since Nancy chose a black dress under her coat, she also wore her black boots which are such a go-to item.

And for your viewing pleasure, Nancy did throw her hat up in the air and even caught it, just like in the show. Getting this event on camera was not quite as successful especially since the hat was the same color as the light sky, and so it wouldn’t focus well. These are the issues you learn about as you go along.

I realize you’ve seen quite a few coats in the last month of our blog posts, but this is the time to snag up some great deals. I even found a rain trench for under $50 and that’ll be useful in the upcoming spring. Granted many of the sales are limited in their sizes, but that’s why it can be a treasure hunt.

Charlotte’s (80+) Outfit: My mom’s outfit is inspired by Joy Behar for this post.

My mom likes this TV host because she’s an original on The View and has many similar things in her life. Joy was a teacher, and has her daughter living in the same building. Sounds very close to my mother’s life, don’t you think?

Joy Behar outfits inspired by tv shows

According to my mom, Joy tends to wear black pants and a bright blazer, so that’s the avenue my mom went with her clothing. She even grabbed a couple of props to add into these photos.

Outfits inspired by tv shows as Joy Behar

I know many women get rid of their “office wear” once they retire. But I still feel that a great blazer or jacket can be the perfect item for so many occasions. Recently we each wore a jacket to give a more sophisticated edge to a graphic t-shirt.

Of course, I may just like blazers more than the next girl because I feel like they can add structure to my shape. Sometimes, these are the best finds at the thrift store but I also found a couple under $40 here and here. You could play up your inner television hostess in a fabulous jacket.

Black pants are probably the most worn ones in your closet.

The three of us showcased them for a dress up event, for the women out there that don’t wear dresses. So I’d love to know if you have a ton of them, or if you wear the same pair all the time?

Personally, I always like to have many different styles if I do have multiples of the same items. For example, there are tuxedo trouserswide leg trousers, along with ankle pants.

Joy Behar for Outfits inspired by tv shows for advanced women

And along with the black pants, the black pumps are quite classic also. I realize that my mother is a rare woman who at 80 can still wear heels. And hopefully I will be going to my grave in my heels too.

However, for those of you who like the flatter heels, there are quite a few nice ones. There’s always the block heels that work for many women. Or an embellished black flat always looks dressy. Of course, I always feel that patent leather seems more dressy as an option.

Here’s looking at some toppers for all kinds of different parts of your life:

  • Your metallic fit and flare dress is gorgeous Jodie! It looks great with the soft green cardigan and tights. I love your mom’s cropped jacket and Nancy’s baker boy hat. I have never seen any of these TV shows, I don’t think we have them on any UK channels. I’ll have a look on Youtube 🙂 Thanks for linking up!

    Emma xxx

    • Thanks so much Emma!!
I didn’t even think about the fact that you’d have different channels over the pond!! You’ll definitely have to check them out!!
      XOXO

  • Your look is my favorite, Jodie! I recognize this dress and love seeing how you remix it. I think what I like most is the color palette. The metallic dress almost functions like a neutral and really lets the pink and green pop.

It was fun to see your different style inspirations and how each of you translated your style icon into a wearable, everyday look.

    • I’m finally glad that I bought this dress, Liz. I know after I wore it to a gala, I thought that was it (besides it’s a tiny bit short)…but wearing it with fun colored tights has proven to be so creative and fun!! I guess it’s good that i don’t always purge items right away?
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • Shannon Paige

I think I found my new favorite blog! You ladies are all so adorable and I love the idea of you all blogging together. This is a great blog post idea and the outfits were done so well! My favorite is the top one, the 50’s outfit!

    • What a wonderful comment to read, Shannon, and thank you so much for those words…that just made my day!!
I hope you come back often and spread the word!!
      XOXO

  • You all three look great but I love your outfit so much. its quite girly and cute. I can’t believe you have knitted it yourself. So beautiful and great in fitting. I would love to make a sweater myself but I’m not i would do it perfectly like you. <3 Have a happy Monday 🙂 Kisses <3

    • Thanks so much Rakhshanda!! Knitting is truly my creative love, but trust me when I say they don’t all turn out perfect. You aren’t close enough to see the mistakes…ha ha!!
      XOXO

  • donnanance

Cute outfits! I wouldn’t have thought of styling an outfit from a TV show. Jodie, I love the sweater! And the wine carrier morphed into a purse…and the necklace…aw heck, I love the it all! The Mary Tyler Moore Show was a favorite…I was married with small children at the time and living in a cute little apartment like that wasn’t an option but it looked like fun. MTM always looked chic no matter what she wore. Your mom hit it out of the park once again with her talk show host outfit. She looks fab and very comfortable in her role. Maybe she missed her calling! xoxo

    • Isn’t this such an interesting inspiration to use, Donna??
Now that everyone has commented that they loved MTM, I’m going to have to watch it!! Of course, I’m sure I’ll zoom in on the outfits, but the story has got to be great since it’s such a classic!!
And my mom probably missed her calling a couple of times. She could totally have been a Martha Stewart type. I’m not sure she’d be a great tv host though—she likes to talk more than listen…ha ha!!

  • Love this fun idea! You all look cool and fab!

    • Thanks Amy!! It really ended up being fun because we all had to really think about this, and we are all so different!!
      XOXO

  • I love all of these Jodie. I’m not sure what show I’d be inspired by. For some reason Charlie’s Angels came to mind… something retro and seventies-ish?

Oh and I LOVE your wine bottle purse. Seriously. How perfect! #teamlovinlife

  • What a fun idea! I think I would like to dress as …hm…. I’ll have to look through my DVR and get back to you 😉

  • Home Town is one of my new favorites, I hope it sticks around for a while! I love her style too, and you represented her well! I’m also impressed with your mom, I hope I can rock heels when I’m 80 too!

    Brooke

    • Of course you can rock heels when you get to be my mom’s age….I think the fact, that my mom still works out 3X a week helps tremendously!! It’s that strong core that affects everything!!
      Thanks Brooke!!
      XOXO

  • Oh my gosh, Jodie! That was a fun post! What great tv inspiration you all used. Your dress is spectacular and I would totally wear that like once a week! You can style it so many different ways. Adorable, my friend. And yes to Mary Tyler Moore! I totally would have picked her as my tv inspiration, too. So fantastic. And your mom…I love that she went with a talk show host and she looks amazing! Such a great post and really creative styling by all.

  • Imastounded

    Much fun!

I was at an impressionable age when MTM came as long, and I modelled myself after her TV persona Mary Richards. I couldn’t be Mary Richards, but no one could, not even MTM herself.

Lovely sweater, Jodie.I guess I should get back to the knitting lessons on YouTube, where I was actually kniting on circular needles. Some day, maybe, I will finish that hat.

    • Hah…I love that you said you couldn’t be Mary Richards, and no one could!!! But funny how we tried to be certain people, huh??
Thanks for the love!! I’ll help you finish that hat….those are one of my favorite items to knit (besides sweaters)!!
      XOXO

  • What a great idea – I love the pictures with the green wall.. and if it were me, I would maybe be a grown up version of Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl.

    • Ohhhh…that’s a great one, Lorena!! Thanks for giving me your point of view!!
      XOXO

  • Carly

You three always look amazing! Jodie, I love the combo of the fit and flare dress with boots. It’s totally unexpected and works so well

  • Karen

What a fun post this is! Like you, I watch VERY little tv, but HGTV is my exception along with some cooking shows on PBS! I love both Home Town and Fixer Upper and the fun that these two couples have together. I can really see the inspiration for your look here! Erin does seem to be creative and colorful in her choices of outfits. I really like your sweater. Is it scratchy at all? I have a sweater hand knit in Ireland and have to wear long sleeves and turtlenecks under it to avoid itching myself to shreds! Yours is such a pretty style and color! Ah Nancy’s look!!! I LOVED the Mary Tyler Moore Show and can see why she stayed home to watch it! I rarely missed an episode! What a great show that was! She did interpret the opening with her look also! I’ve never seen the View, but your mom looks lovely and very professional! I’d wear that outfit to work in a heartbeat! Love the blue and black together!

    • Thanks for the great thoughts, Karen!!
I don’t think my sweater is scratchy, but I’m also not super sensitive. But wearing it over this dress which is sleeveless didn’t bother me at all. The only scratchy item I’ve knit that was annoying to me was that burgundy scarf that I ended up layering over the other scarf just a couple of weeks ago….But I know that can bother Nancy a lot.
      XOXO

    • We had to stop watching the food network, because we’d always get up and start snacking—it’s amazing how that works. But watching HGTV for some reason doesn’t have that same effect with home remodeling (and that’s a good thing…ha ha)
      Thanks Amy Ann!

  • Oh I giggled at the ‘the view’ mug, what a great prop! You all look so nice in your inspired outfits, and this is a wonderful idea when you’re feeling uninspired by your wardrobe! 🙂

  • Judy Gramith

Although I’ve only seen this HGTV show a couple of times it was enough to know that this pair is genuine, loving, and talented. I love your quirky nod to retro here Jodie. That sweater is such a soft pretty color and the tights and boots compliment it really well. Gosh your sweaters are so beautiful Jodie!! It’s always special when you wear one!
Nancy has the perfect Mary Richards vibe going here. I remember a few Friday nights during my college years when Mary was the highlight too! The shot where Nancy is ready to toss the hat is really great!
I’m not surprised that Charlotte is a Joy Behar fan. I like Joy too and she and Charlotte share a feisty attitude and sharp minds. That short blue blazer is really cute.

    • Thanks for all of the lovely words, Jude…but now I need to know, who inspires you??
And I bet you have the best outfit for that person!!!
      XOXO

  • What a fun idea! All of your outfits are great! How cool is your bag!

We cancelled cable, so we don’t watch much TV anymore (unfortunately, the boys discovered how easy it is to watch shows online…). When we did have cable, I almost only watched HGTV (okay, some BRAVO shows as well…).

  • Bettye Rainwater

Gah! I guessed that your mom was emulating Mary Tyler Moore from the very first picture, ha! I did used to watch it on tv when it originally aired so I know the “you’re gonna make it after allllll” theme song and hat tossing opening very well.

And that gold dress is GORGEOUS in all caps. Wowza!

All of you ladies look great…I’m going to have to check out the movie post next!

    Bettye

    • Thanks so much Bettye! It was certainly a different and fun way to think about how to style an outfit, and it brought back memories (at least for Nancy) that was fun to discuss while we were taking the photos!!
      XOOX

  • How fun is this post!! I loooooove Home Town and am so inspired by Erin and Ben. They’re incredibly creative and fun. I keep telling The Hubs that we’re going to buy a fixer upper and use their show for inspiration.

Your outfit. I’m in love with that dress. The color is so pretty. As for that cardi… You did a beautiful job. I cannot believe you made that. I mean, it looks like it was store bought. It’s so perfect. I wish I had that kind of skill.

I can’t believe you’d never seen the Mary Tyler Moore Show. That’s too funny. I use to throw my hat up and twirl and imitate Mary’s face all the time when I was a kid. I was kind of a goof. I love that your mom selected her for inspiration.

Fun fact: I was a blog ambassador for The View when it first started. I didn’t get to meet the ladies, but I interacted with the show on Twitter. Your mom nailed Joy’s outfit. Honestly, I hadn’t noticed that she has a uniform but she does. Cute.

    • You have such an interesting life, Daenel…..fun fact? Wow!!! That’s such a cool part of your background!! I bet that taught you a lot about social media and the likes….
Thanks for the compliments on my knitting…it is one of my passions, and I have to laugh when you say it looks store bought. I look at it and see all the mistakes and things I need to do to fix it…LOL!! I think it’ll be better after I wash it, so it doesn’t look so flat….
Now that we’ve done this post, I’m going to have to watch the MTM show….I guess I’ve been living under a rock…ha ha!
Thanks for pushing us out of our usual for this challenge. You rock!!

  • Mother Daughter

You all three are so cute. Love your dress and the boots. I can’t believe you have not watched the Mary Tyler Moore show, I never missed watching. lol

    • Thanks Victoria…I should watch the reruns shouldn’t I? It’s such a classic!

  • Girl… How could you have never watched The Mary Tyler Moore show??!!?! It was one of my faves and Nancy did a fabulous job recreating her look!

  • HGTV is the best! I had not watched Home Town yet, though. I’m going to have to give that a whirl. I love how all of the outfits turned out! All of your inspirations were so fun. 🙂

    • We love HGTV….it’s better than the cooking channel, because then I’m always hungry! LOL!
      Thanks Lindsey!

  • Aww, you guys look great! Your dress is so pretty and unique, so I can see why you look for more opportunities to wear it. I am a cord cutter, so I had never heard of Home Town before. You are right, her hair is the cutest. I cannot believe you had never watched The Mary Tyler Moore show before! I recently re-watched several episodes and so enjoyed the fashion.

    • I’m so in awe that you cut the cord. Not that we watch much tv, but it is our down time occasionally. But we do talk about it….
Now I’m going to have to watch the Mary Tyler Moore show—I bet I’d love it!
      XOXO

      • Before you become too awed, we do have Roku for Hulu and Netflix. I don’t watch very often, but the boys couldn’t go completely cold turkey!

  • Your outfit is so cute, Jodie. And I love the boots with it too! One of my favorite things about winter is all the choices we have with boots.

    • Boots and sweaters make me for a happy girl in the winter. As much as I love being warm and the summer months, I do think I’d miss my boots if I ever moved!!
      Thanks Lisa!!

What a great idea and you all three did such a good job. Well done! – Amy

    • Thanks Amy!! I have to admit this wasn’t easy for me, but once I figured out who I wanted to use as my inspiration, it certainly was fun!!

  • What a fun theme! I am so in love with your outfit! I want to wear that!

  • Paula Mullins Holloway

LOVE Nancy’s Mary Richards look! Great Inspiration!

You guys are so adorable! I love your tights and outfit Jodi. I need to wear bright tights soon! Thanks for the inspiration!

    • I have a couple pair of bright tights now—it’s a fun change!!
      Thanks Cindy!!
      XOXO

  • Such fun outfits! And that is a great dress you thrifted, Jodie!

    • Thanks Mary!! I’m so glad I’m actually getting wear out of this dress now…for awhile it just sat in my closet!!
      XOXO

  • These posts are such fun! I was having fun guessing at yours before reading it. I was thinking, perhaps, Zoey Deschanel… But alas…I got it wrong 🙂 I don’t usually watch regular TV anymore, so I’ll trust your judgment on Hometown…bet it’s great!

However, I completely grew up on TV, so the MTM show was iconic for me…Nancy hit it out of the park 🙂

Also not a View watcher. ..BUT your mom’s look definitely channels a TV news interviewer. Great outfit choice!

    • Heck…I wouldn’t have even been able to guess my character without knowing ahead of time, Em!! I take a lot of poetic license with these posts lately, so it’s whoever’s guess…ha ha!!
But I do love the home shows so much—probably why I love your blog too!! Not that I practice any of it…LOL!!
      Thanks!!!
      XOXO

  • Your dress is so cute. Interesting, I never realized that your mom is so much talker than you.

    • Thanks Nicole!
Yes…my mom actually used to be much taller than me. She has shrunk a little, and if I’m wearing heels and she isn’t, I can be as tall as her…ha ha!!
      XOXO

  • Jodie,
You are such a talented knitter! I love the sweater!!
I don’t watch HGTV because I’m an interior designer, but most people love it.
Being from Minneapolis where Mary Tyler Moore’s imaginary TV station was located, I am particular to Nancy’s style. I loved that show!
Your mom’s look is perfect and the coffee mug was the perfect prop! I like watching the view but I don’t really watch as much as I used to. I enjoyed it when Barbara was on it.

    Hugs,
    Robin

    • I can totally see why you wouldn’t watch HGTV ….if I had your creative genius, I wouldn’t need to watch it either!!
Thanks for the love for mom and Nancy too—they’ll love to read this!!

  • Jodie, you all look amazing and I love your idea for a post, I am a tv serie addict and love to get fashion inspiration from my favorite shows 🙂 You all look wonderful and having fun. Kisses

    • It’s fun to see how other people style clothes, so I can see why you’d enjoy tv for inspiration, Vale!!

What a clever and fun post, Jodie. You’ve each represented your celebrity with style and the perfect accessories. Btw, I love that you matched your tight color to your beautiful sweater. It looks amazing. Xo Jonet

    • Thanks so much Jonet!! I just bought these colorful tights and I’ll have to experiment with other ways to wear them—aren’t they so fun?

    • Thanks Laura!!
It was totally fun to use this kind of inspiration to figure out an outfit!!

  • Omg… I love all of your looks! All so original and reflective of your personalities! And aren’t you a genius using a wine carrier as a purse?! This theme was so much fun…Daenel really set the bar high for theme choices from now on!

  • Rebecca Saffer

Love these interpretations. Your hand knit sweater is gorgeous; the color is beautiful and it fits like a dream. Mary Tyler Moore is one of my favorite shows and can be seen on re-runs, Nancy nailed this look. Charlotte’s interpretation of Joy Behar is right-on as well. My favorite shows also include “That Girl” with Marlo Thomas (for an actress with a series of minimal temp jobs, her wardrobe was incredible). I also loved “The Avengers” with Diana Rigg as Emma Peel.

    • I had to look up the Avengers!! And wouldn’t you make a fabulous Emma!! One of the photos I saw online, she was wearing white booties. See–you could be modern and still dress like her!!
Besides with fashion week in NYC upon us, you wouldn’t look out of place at all……(send me the photos..ha ha)
      Thanks Rebecca!!!

  • Queen of Rods

Everyone looks great, and you’re such a talented knitter…however…I must comment on your “handbag.” Love it!

    • Isn’t it something else? I should credit my friend, Glenda for finding it. We were laughing about it at the thrift store, when I realized that I should buy it!! It’s perfect for the blog!!
      Thanks Janet!!

  • Eileen Flanigan Sinda

Hi, Jodie. I love Home Town too. Erin is just the sweetest. Ben and she make me smile the whole day after watching Home Town. She is so artistic and love her outfits. You rocked this style. Like Nancy, I was also in love with MTM. Groundbreaking show and wonderful actress. Wanted to be just like her. Love that Nancy threw her hat up too. I use Charlotte’s style a lot. I think it is a classy look and quite comfortable too. That blue looks great on her. Now I am the opposite of you and Charlotte. I was a tall girl and could never walk in heels, but I can rock a nice pair of flats. Have to be selective these days as I have foot problems, but love a good looking pair of flats. Loved this issue!

    • How great that you have heard of Erin and Home Town. Both mom and Nancy had never heard of the show, so I wondered if anyone else would have!!
There are some fabulous flats available, I think Eileen, so you still have quite the selection, don’t you think??
Thanks for joining in on this!!
      XOXO

  • Fun post! Fashion inspiration can come from so many avenues. As you can see, even tho we are an interior design blog, we chose LBD’s as our logo and connected fashion/design right from the start!-Laurel

    • Exactly!! Once you open your mind to other avenues, the world is your palette!!!
      Thanks Laurel!!

  • Kellyann

Your outfit just screams “texture” to me, I am loving all the different textures and how well everything works together! You are cute as a button (pun intended) in this sweet dress and cardi! Love that wine bottle carrying purse too. I haven’t yet watched an episode of Hometown but I love the premise, I’ll check it out one of these days!
    All you ladies are marvelous!!!
    xo,
    Kellyann

    • Awwwww….thanks Kellyann!
I don’t think as much about texture but it can add so much to an outfit…I need to start looking at it as an element more!!!
