Recreating Outfits in Your Own Unique Way

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

One of my favorite parts of blogging and being part of the fashion community is the endless inspiration surrounding us. Whether it’s a beautiful outfit from Pinterest, a look from another stylish woman, or even just a color combo that catches your eye, these moments can be the spark that leads to something fabulous in your own closet. That’s why I wanted to dive into the idea of recreating outfits—with 4 examples!

Quote of the day: “No one keeps up his enthusiasm automatically. Enthusiasm must be nourished with new actions, new aspirations, new efforts, and new vision. It is one’s own fault if his enthusiasm is gone; he has failed to feed it.” Unknown

Taking the time and intention of using our style as a tool isn’t always easy. That’s why you should rely on others to give you a fresh perspective and ways to combine your clothes.

I love how our closet gives us the opportunity to get creative and build new brain pathways. Recently, I was inspired in my daily looks by others, and realized there is no end to the ideas I can use.

Recreating outfits isn’t about duplication—it’s about interpretation. It’s about taking an idea, a silhouette, or a feeling and making it yours. Today, I’m showing how I took inspiration from others and recreated some fabulous looks with items I already had.

Ideas on recreating outfits from your closet

1. Pink and Feminine

Kay Harns wore the most delightful pink outfit that just oozed femininity and springtime charm. I met Kay many years ago, and while this isn’t her “normal” type of look (she’s usually much more conservative and classic), I applauded her for trying something different.

I also thought it would be fun to use for my idea of recreating outfits.

Instead of copying it piece-for-piece, I focused on the overall vibe: feminine, whimsical, and pink.

This is in no way a copy of Kay’s outfit, but an outfit built off of a mood/vibe. Sure, I used the same colorway, but the pieces are varied.

Layering dresses

2. Layering Dresses

After the 4 of us worked on the idea of layering dresses, I’ve honestly been obsessed with the idea. It’s like an “aha” moment because I have so many dresses, and by layering them, I can make them seem so different.

I took this faux leather jumper dress and wore it over my long-sleeved striped dress (the same dress I chose for my rut project because I always wear it with turquoise accessories).

My dresses were very different in their details, yet the idea/concept is what drew me in. I did copy the faux leather sleeveless dress over a longer sleeve, longer dress.
This would also work in so many other ways.

The layering also gives dresses more life throughout the year. Don’t pack away your sleeveless dresses when fall comes around—just get creative!

This outfit reminded me that we don’t have to limit how we wear pieces. Sure, a dress can be one-and-done, but heck, why not add the unexpected instead?

Green outfit with loafers

3. Green “Twinset”

I gravitate to saving Pins on Pinterest that remind me of the things I already own. So it’s no surprise that I saved this green blazer and jeans Pin and knew I wanted to use it for this recreate outfit post.

While the model is wearing blue jeans, I switched to white jeans. And my green blazer is shorter, so I left my top untucked to give the same length/silhouette.

This example of recreating outfits is based somewhat on color and items, but also on silhouette. I cuffed my jeans and left the top long to give off that same proportion.
It didn’t hurt that I had similar loafers also.

I’ll admit, the simplicity of the Pinterest photo had me worried the outfit might feel too plain, which is why I added a necklace, a brooch on the pocket, and bigger earrings.

Long black dress wore casually

4. Marsha in the Middle: Black Dress with a Twist

Marsha shared this stunning combination recently, and it made me sit up and take notice. Why? I rarely wear black, but I was drawn to how chic this outfit looked. It also reminded me that I have this long, evening gown that rarely gets worn.
But who’s going to know it’s an evening gown when I wear it like this, right?

Insider tip: Sometimes we are thrown off by the terminology. When I think maxi dress, I think casual. But an evening gown can be very similar in silhouette and thus could be casualized??

The combination was so effortless, yet chic. I also loved how the blouse covered up the “dressier” part of the evening gown. While Marsha wore boots with her dress, I went with sneakers with the same metallic vibe.

This idea for recreating outfits kept the color combination the same, and even used the colors in the same way; however, there are plenty of differences:
-I buttoned my blouse and used a brooch at the top.
-As previously stated, I wore sneakers.
-Since my dress was straight, I wanted to add interest, so I used a cardigan pin to pull up part of the gown.

This kind of recreation is my favorite. It’s low-stress, no need to overthink, and still adds a fresh twist to your tried-and-true pieces.
It’s also an ideal way to casualize something you might “save” for those special occasions.

Tips for Recreating Outfits the Easy Way

So now that you’ve seen some examples, here are my go-to tips for successfully recreating outfits:

  1. Focus on the mood, not the mirror. Instead of trying to look exactly like the photo, think about the feeling the outfit gives you. Is it romantic? Sporty? Sleek? Then find pieces in your closet that channel that mood.
  2. Color is a powerful tool. If the exact silhouettes are tricky to match, using similar colors can instantly create a cohesive look.
  3. Use accessories to bridge the gap. Don’t have the same top or dress? Add a scarf, belt, or bold jewelry to help bring the outfit together.
  4. Think silhouettes. Even if you don’t have the same color pieces in your closet, try copying the silhouette instead.
  5. Don’t overthink it. The beauty of recreating outfits is that it’s not about getting it “right.” It’s about experimenting and discovering new ways to wear what you already love.

Final Thoughts: Make It Your Own

The world is full of stylish women, amazing outfit combinations, and colorful creativity. I love that I can be inspired by women of any age and style—and then reinterpret those ideas to fit my mood, my closet, and my life.

So if you ever feel stuck in a style rut, hop onto Pinterest or Instagram and start saving looks that catch your eye.
Or else challenge yourself like Tresi and I did recently to style your “rut” pieces differently.

The biggest factor is to make sure you don’t only wear the outfits you already wear. Dare yourself to try something that may seem a bit bold or different for you.
While you always want to look like “you”, you also want to evolve.

And as always, style is meant to be fun, not stressful. Remember, not every outfit will be one that floats your boat, but you won’t know until you try.

As much as I love my site, Jodie’s Touch of Style, I really enjoy putting together my daily emails. I consider my emails an extension of my blog that is chock-full of positive inspiration that one friend calls a “Variety Show.”
I include articles, videos, and posts that strike my fancy, and since I have no siblings to share with, I share with you.
