Styling a shacket and faux leather leggings may seem a bit risky. An old woman like me wearing leather-looking leggings?? Tsk tsk.
But I think this is the best kind of style challenge we can do as we get older. Try new things and get bolder. Gone are the days we need to blend into the woodwork and not be seen. We have too much experience and helpful knowledge for those around us.

Quote of the day: “If you want a significant change in your results, then you probably need a significant change to your strategy. Working harder on your current strategy is unlikely to move the needle. Before you work harder, work on the right thing.” James Clear
I love this quote for many ventures in your life. Even getting dressed can be a process that exhibits certain results. We forget that we are visual animals and create a visual impression of our appearance every time we are out in public.

As for the shacket trend, I like to think that even if you consider yourself conservative in your style, this shacket idea is one that everyone can have fun styling. My red plaid shacket is one that I thrifted years ago. In fact, I have worn it as a shirt and as a jacket before.
What is the Shacket Trend?
After sharing this item in my Fall Trend Update for 2021, I thought it was only fitting that the three of us show you examples of how to wear the piece. In fact, there are many fall trends that don’t make my selections because they don’t fit with what we like. BUT the shacket is something that is ageless. And will work just as wonderfully for Fall 2022.
As for the shacket itself, the word itself is a combination of “shirt” and “jacket”, thus the shacket. The true definition is that it is meant to be thicker than a shirt yet thinner than a jacket. This makes it the ideal layering item, especially for the fall and spring months.
You will see many of the younger generation sporting this style as part of their casual outfits. At first, many shackets were plaid. But now I’m seeing them in solids and other materials.
The piece is usually oversized enough that you can layer it over something else. Yet it’s versatile since you can wear it on its own also. You can find shackets of all different materials and lengths now, so don’t worry that they aren’t for you.
Insider tip: As I discussed in the ways to make this trend affordable, you could thrift a man’s shirt as well as check out the younger girl’s stores. Remember, there is no age limit at ANY store. And don’t forget, if there is a man living in your household, his clothes are fair game!!

Shacket and Faux Leather Leggings Outfit
I thought the idea of a shacket and faux leather leggings worked perfectly together since many shackets are normally longer and cover the bum which is what most of us prefer with leggings.
For those who prefer coverage in the front of your body, the advantage of a shacket is you CAN button it (like I showed in one of the photos below).
The disadvantage of wearing it with a shorter tee like this with a shacket and faux leather leggings is if it gets warm, you may not be comfortable taking off the shacket. HOWEVER, you can always tie the shacket around your waist for bum coverage. (I know this because I did it and prove it below).
But if you don’t like the idea of the shacket with leggings, then we have other ideas for you.
Charlotte wore hers with a dress, and then Lesley styled a shacket with jeans.
Or here’s a shacket with shorts outfit.

As for the whimsical t-shirt, I have a collection of items like this. However, this has been a recent thing. When I was working, I was much too serious to think a professional woman could wear such silly things. It’s only been since I’ve retired and have been blogging that I realize life is meant to be enjoyed. And wearing whimsical items can be joyful for me.
This is not the first time I’ve worn this t-shirt. I took it with us on our Caribbean cruise and wore it under a kimono.

How Accessories Add Even More Personality
I never know how to explain the fact that accessories are the best extras of an outfit. There is so much they can do which is why it surprised me when women don’t wear any extra accessories.
This is just a short list of what accessories can do in my outfits.
1-Add a totally different color to the look.
2-Give the outfit some personality with whimsical or edgy items.
3-Create cohesiveness within the outfit for color or style.
4-And my favorite thing is to take the focus off other things. Things like messy hair, my scar on my face, all those things we consider our flaws (which are really just wonderful characteristics of ourselves.)
I would even consider my eyeglasses an accessory since I have many different colored pairs that can coordinate with the overall look.
Insider tip: I wrote about how to pick the right glasses frames for your face.
My earrings are the leather variety which makes them super lightweight. I don’t know about you, but I can’t handle the heavy earrings anymore.
I did keep the purse the same color as the plaid shacket since there were so many other focal points in the outfit. Although I will say that I love Iris Apfel’s idea about getting dressed, that more is more!!

Faux Leather Leggings
Let’s talk about faux leather leggings. I had a friend message me this: “I have a fashion emergency that maybe you want to use as an idea for your blog. I have these awesome black spandex faux leather pants I got last year on sale and I don’t know how to wear them. Heeeeelp!! Beware, They are very tight (leggings style).”
Because of her request, I will focus an entire post in the future on these types of leggings, but in all reality, they are just leggings. Do you remember when you first bought leggings and started styling them?? Were you intimidated by them because they were different?
I think many times we do feel scared of something new and different. The only thing different between faux leather leggings and other leggings is they look like leather. Leather can be thought of as edgy and bold, and that’s something that can be good for all of us.
Maybe growing up, we were taught to be timider, however, I feel that over time, we have learned so much in our lives and have a ton of experience, that being bold shouldn’t be a bad thing.
Remember that not all faux leather leggings are created equally. Some are shinier than others. And just like your Ponte leggings, some are of better quality. I always think you want leggings that stay up and don’t get saggy over the day.
My faux leather leggings are the type that isn’t super shiny. They are more of a matte finish with an interesting print. These are from Peach (my link gives you $10 off your first order. Just make sure to also input my name as the referring person, because their system doesn’t do it automatically). Peach doesn’t have my exact ones anymore, but they do have a couple of versions that are similar.
Why are you seeing these everywhere?? Because leather pants (faux or real) are a big trend lately.
Insider tip: I have 4 other ways to wear them in this post.

Fun Ways to Print Mix with a Plaid Shacket and Faux Leather Leggings
Print mixing with your shoes is a great way to dip your toe (see what I did there, haha?) into combining two different prints.
And let’s talk about these loafers. These are the Wyatt in the ivory mini cheetah print from Walking Cradles. Loafers are another trend that is going strong lately. And Walking Cradles is my gold standard for comfortable shoes. The tiny pillows in the soles make them easy for walking and they have an incredible range of sizes (even for narrow or wide feet).
I consider animal print footwear a wonderful staple for our closet. They are made up of different neutrals and thus can work with so many outfits. They can add a splash of personality to even the plainest look.
You can see my review of these exact shoes and Lesley and Charlotte’s reviews of other loafers.
Insider tip: Start with a print top and solid-colored pants. Then the print footwear is separated by the solid pants and it doesn’t seem as busy for those of you who worry about how to print mix. You can see how all three of us did that here.

Now Let’s Look at Other Plaid Outfits
Since we see a ton of plaid this time of year, I thought I’d showcase other combinations that could give you inspiration for your closet.
- Sure Fire Combinations for Red Plaid Outfits with Diverse Colors— Using my color recipe, I found 5 options for styling a red plaid item.
- How to Mix and Match Prints with Buffalo Plaid–The original trio used our buffalo plaid totes to print mix with our winter coats.

My Goal

I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what others think.
My hope is that you get ideas and inspiration from Charlotte, Lesley, and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
