Which shoe personality for the day?

Showcasing Shoe Personality with Different Shoes

Have you heard of shoe personality? Maybe not, since I just made it up. As a shoeaholic, I truly believe that our shoes can add flair and fun to absolutely any outfit.

Quote of the day: “You have to remember the value of your individuality, that you have something different to offer that nobody else can.” Jennifer Lopez

Since I talked about 4 different brands of comfortable everyday shoes, I thought it’d be the perfect time to address the question of which of your shoes go with an outfit. I chose the quote because while basics are fine, it’s wonderful to have the option to add shoe personality to outfits.

Sometimes we get stuck on the idea of the “right” shoe with an outfit. Yet I once showed 3 different ideas of shoes with a black and white dress. And what it really comes down to is shoe personality (mixed with your own personality too). When we talk about our personality and style, I truly believe that it can CHANGE depending on the day, our mood and where we are going, along with our co-horts for the day.
I also believe that our style should evolve over time. Maybe when we were younger, the goal was to look like everyone else, but maybe that should be different now? Maybe we should focus on our individuality and have a little fun with our shoe personality.

The Outfit

So I wanted to put together an outfit and show you MANY different options of footwear with the same clothing. I even went as far to grab my gold pants which many of you might think would be hard to style. These pants were the first in my series about styling the same piece many different ways. And here I am styling them with 13 different pairs of shoes. Trust me, almost every pair in my closet could have worked!

One thing I want to say is you can get the “right” and “wrong” fashion rules on other blogs. I want to be the one to push you and have you look at your closet differently. Getting dressed should be fun, not stressful.

No one should say there is a RIGHT and WRONG shoe choice with these examples. Style is all about showcasing your personality in your outfits. What I hope to do is to give you some insight of how a certain shoe can be perceived. AND hopefully push you to have more fun with your shoe personality.

What I did is categorize the shoe choices by classic, colorful, casual and modern. Yet you may consider them normal, crazy, everyday and weird. That’s the best thing about style…we are all allowed to be different.

Insider tip: When you think about shoes, think about them from how other’s see them. We see our shoes when we look down. Therefore they are more prevalent in our line of sight. In actuality, shoes are only about 1/10 of our outfit in surface area.
Why do I say this? Because it’s the perfect reason to have them stand out a little more.

Classic

For the classic options, I chose the shoes and colors that I thought would appeal to the masses. It’s always good to have the basics in our closet, and these would be my basics.

Navy pumps to match an outfit
These are the Walking Cradles Marley pumps

I think most of us have been told over and over to match our shoes to our pants in order to look taller. While I understand the concept, I always say that NO ONE is going to think I’m tall when they meet me in person, LOL. (FYI, I am 5’2″).

On top of that, I also think it’s time to embrace our perfectly imperfect bodies and stop worrying about looking anything except wonderful (like I blogged about in the past, here)

I chose navy pumps to match the sweater, brown booties (which I showcased 5 different looks here), and black and white ballet flats.

Colorful-Solids

I consider colorful to be a personality trait. It’s definitely an adjective that describes my outfit and shoe personality. So if you are a positive and upbeat person, I think colorful footwear would be a wonderful addition to many of your outfits.

I chose 2 warm colors for this example with red pumps and orange flats. You could also group the turquoise flats from “Casual” into this category also.
This shows that your shoes can be that pop of color to an outfit just like a purse.

Insider tip: If shoes of a totally different color seems too random, consider adding in the same color accessories to tie that color into the outfit more.

Colorful-Prints

Prints can be worn on your shoes too. I chose a blue print pair for a more conservative look, and then a multi color shoe to add in a little more whimsey.

Casual

Since life has gotten more casual, it makes sense that our shoe personality could join into this style too.

Fun with sneakers

I picked 3 different colored casual shoes for this category. The lime green sneakers, a turquoise pair of espadrilles, and orange sneakers.
This proves that both the warm colors and cool colors can work with this example.

Modern

I think of this last category as more modern and trendy. Personally I like trendy because it makes me feel young and vibrant. Especially when trendy is part of your shoe personality. It can be a super easy way to add a little modern vibe to an otherwise basic outfit.

Shoe personality with white boots

These white boots have been my favorite purchase of last winter and all three of us even wore them. My other selections were a pair of leopard print mules, and the other is a metallic pair of mules.
You might notice that the metallic mules could be considered a matching pair, and maybe you’d categorized them as classic? I put them as part of the modern looks only because they are mules. Again, there is not a right or wrong when looking at these.

Shoe personality with different shoes

So even if you liked one or a couple of pairs of shoes better with this outfit than others, I still hope you’ll consider your shoe personality next time you choose a pair. Especially when you purchase your next pair of shoes. Have fun and enjoy the difference they can bring to an outfit!

As a funny aside: Did you all notice the toothpaste stain on my sweater?? Of course I didn’t notice until I was editing these photos, and I didn’t want to retake them all. SO it’s a lesson to see who notices?

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
