Stripes and Print Mixing are a Perfect Combination

Quote of the day: “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” Herman Melville

We are continuing the stripes theme after we matched them to the rest of our outfit. Now I wanted to incorporate them into a print mixing look.

I know for myself, I would never have put together 2 prints with intention before I started blogging. If you feel that way too, then this spring I blogged about trying it with baby steps.

But if you like the challenge of seeing if you can put together 2 different prints on your body, then a striped shirt could be the perfect place to start. Especially a black & white striped shirt. And I’ll show all 3 of us styling it a little differently.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I know that stripes and print mixing are an easy way to make an outfit more interesting.

When we were talking about easy ways to print mix this spring, I showed print pants and a print scarf. Well here I am with the same idea of adding in another print with your scarf, only my two prints are right next to each other.

I ended up wearing my earrings from one of my Rocksbox sets. I was worried these earrings would be a little too heavy for all day wear, but I was pleasantly surprised. Since they weren’t too heavy, I bought them, so you’ll be seeing a lot of these. Don’t forget that you can get a month of the Rocksbox service free with my code, Jtouchofstylexoxo. It’s truly free, so what you could do is get a box, wear the jewelry for a week, then send it back. Get another box for another week or so, and then cancel the service.

I recently picked up these jeans while thrifting, and I thought they were brown on the front and black on the back portion.

However, when I got them home, I realized they were more of a plum color. And matched my plum booties to a tee. Now I couldn’t have planned that if I’d tried, right? I’ve been surprised at how much I wear these booties, and you recently saw them in our booties and sweaters post.

I knitted this cardigan about 5 years ago. I fell in love with this yarn, and then when I saw this pattern, I knew it’d be perfect. I’d probably wear it more than I do, but the shoulders tend to droop off my shoulders. That’s the disadvantage of knitting your own sweaters. They don’t always turn out perfect… But considering the time and energy that went into this project, I still try to wear it!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy’s black and white striped tank top creates a great foundation for this outfit.

She’s using the stripes on her top and then a larger print on the bottom half of her body. Then to make it less “in your face” she’s covered up with a solid colored jacket.

Since the rest of the outfit is black and white, you could add in any color jacket to make this work for you. In fact, a blush colored jacket would look very stylish. Or you could go really bright with a red one. And even a more subdued color like grey would be very pretty. Not that you have to add in another color, because a black jacket would be wonderful also.

I know that even though I’m an accessory junkie, I’m starting to think about the overall focal point of the outfit instead of always adding in accessories. So for Nancy’s outfit, we kept the necklace, earrings and bracelet very small and unassuming. But I have to admit, that once you get used to putting on jewelry, it’s hard not to!

Am I the only one that starts singing Blue Suede Shoes when you see these shoes?

I think having bright blue shoes is always a good idea. And if you wear jeans a lot, then blue shoes would be a perfect option for you.

But if you didn’t want bright blue ones, then I could find you many other varieties. There’s this light blue pair of driving shoes that are so pretty. Or there are sneakers, booties, rain boots, or a loafer.

I introduced Nancy on Instagram in this post using the outfit below for those of you who didn’t see it. One of the details I was talking about is how Nancy is usually open to the outfits I suggest. Although these pants aren’t usually her go to pants. But when I was looking for a similar pair, I had to gasp at the price of these. Seeing that, made me realize what a great deal we got when Nancy bought her pair.

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: Considering the first time I suggested mixing prints in our outfits to my mom, and I received some push back, I thought mom rocked this look.

Not only is she layering a striped blouse over a print blouse, but her pants are also a very subtle stripe.

Since there was so much black and white in the outfit, we decided to add in the bright pink as a contrast in mom’s accessories. Our blogette, Jude, actually made these earrings for my mom and gave them to her when we met up with her in Seattle.

And here you can see the 2 prints of the blouses better. This could be an easy way to combine prints, because they almost look like one shirt.

There’s even another print going on in this look.

The cuffs of the striped shirt have this zebra print when you cuff them up. Talk about going crazy with prints, yet it works together so well.

I know many women don’t like wearing belts much, but I do think that adding this colorful belt breaks up the stripes nicely. Even if you added a black belt to this outfit, I think it would give some shape to the overall look. But just think about adding a colorful one like red, or blue velvet.

I wouldn’t normally pose my mother in front of a dumpster for our blog photos, but when I saw this pink one, I thought it complimented the outfit so nice because of mom’s pink accessories. Luckily it didn’t smell bad, LOL! But you can see some dust on her pants from rubbing against it! All in a day’s work for a fashion blogger!
