Styling Dressy Outfits with Jeans
Dressy outfits with jeans seems oxymoron. Talk about getting me out of my comfort zone. Because if you know me, then you know that I love dressing up in my dresses and skirts. I don’t think of a fancy occasion by wearing my jeans. Even though we styled this earlier this year, it’s still not my natural inclination.
Quote of the day: “We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.” Anais Nin
But after that earlier post, my friend Sheela thought this was such a great inspiration, and she wanted to try to make it even more over the top. You know, like something you’d wear to a red carpet affair. And since I’ve seen many people in jeans at the Met in NYC, and even when we went to see Hamilton here in Denver, I figured why not?
We started this collaboration with Sheela and Eve by styling our jeans for a casual day. That’s an outfit you may put together all the time without our help. But it was fun to see how the mother/daughter teams approached it.
Eve from The World According to Eve
Eve shows us the perfect example of how a peplum top can work to add some flair to for dressy outfits with jeans. I just recently wore my peplum top and I think they are great for women of any shape. And then it’s such a modern style to add in shoes of a totally different color instead of shoes that “match.”
Sheela from Sheela Writes
I always am impressed at how Sheela can make an outfit so edge and classic at the same time. I always love a blazer and think they are classic, but I would never think to wear just a bralette under it. Of course, Sheela has been working incredibly hard at her workouts and it’s fabulous to be able to show off all her hard work.

Why I Wore This Outfit
When I think about dress up, I tend to imagine bright and shiny. Therefore, I figured this gold jacquard jacket would add the fancy element I needed to the jeans.
The top has metallic thread running through it, but it’s hard to tell in the photos. That’s why I added in the rhinestone choker and earrings for extra bling.

If sleeveless isn’t your thing, you can always find some coverage with other tops. This short sleeved version comes in many different colors.
Another option would be a mesh like jacket to wear over the sleeveless to keep yourself cooler. This white jacket could be casual or dressy, and there’s also a black one. I found a gold one too, but it’s a little out of my price range!
You might be surprised at how the top, jacket and shoes are all over 6 years old. I had them back when I was working and wore them to the office quite a bit. You might think that the jacket is a little formal for work attire, but I usually paired it with a brown, knit shirt underneath. I always received so many compliments on it which is why I’ve never purged it even though it’s a little big now.
I have never, ever paired this jacket with the top underneath it though. Print mixing like this was never part of my vocabulary until I started blogging.

Why Stacy Wore This Outfit
Stacy just bought this top recently. Most of her tops that were already in her closet were for work to pair under a suit jacket. Therefore, she thought the lace and open shoulders were perfect for this theme. And she included the belt to create more of a fitted silhouette.
The yellow accents are mostly because of my pushing and influence! Even though she’s a matchy girl at heart, she decided to try stepping out of her comfort zone with a yellow purse that ended up matching her yellow shoes. I think this detail really adds such a modern edge to the outfit.
How You Could Change This Outfit
If you aren’t as excited about the yellow accent color in the shoes as I am, then don’t fear. You could certainly stick with the black and white theme with a polka dot pair of shoes, a gingham pair or even stripes. And if you want black and white for everything, there are those colors in some fun purses too. This one is predominantly white, while this one is half and half, and this one is more black, yet with a fun design.
You can see her bracelet more close up on the video. It’s a truly sentimental piece that her dad made for her mom back when the two were dating in high school. I think we all have pieces that touch our hearts like this, and it’s fun to actually wear them instead of hiding them in a box somewhere.

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit
My mom made this sequin top for New Years Eve 2000, but she hasn’t worn it since. I twisted her arm to style it for our sequin series 3 years ago, but that doesn’t really count as wearing it out and about. Yet let me tell you the compliments she received the day she had this on. I bet at least 4 strangers stopped her and told her how great she looked in this top. I know it’s not our usual thought to wear a sequin top out in the daytime with jeans, but maybe we all should?
How You Could Change This Outfit
If you think this sequin top is over the top, then there are other fun options. You could always pair a relatively simple black top with rhinestone jewelry. The black background of the top would showcase the shine of the jewelry so perfectly. For example this necklace would be the focus of any outfit. Or you could choose one with black in it too, so it’s not as sparkly.
Not only do these shoes have rhinestones on the back portion of the heel, my mom also added some clips to the front area too. When I tell my mom to go fancy with her jeans, she definitely adds as much sparkle as possible. We called her the walking disco ball this day, and that’s never a bad thing.
Tips & Tricks for Dressy Outfits with Jeans
I love that all 3 of us went in different directions with trying to make our denim jeans fancy. Yet all of the details of gold, silk, lace or sequins can make anything seem dressier.
Another item that most of us think of for the special affairs are pearls. Adding that pearl necklace can be an easy way to give even a t-shirt a little more pizzazz.
And as for the jeans themselves, most of us think of the darker denim as dressier than the lighter washes. So who else wears their jeans for a fancy time?? I’d love to know what you pair with them?
Right now there are issues posting to Pinterest from my blog. But you can easily go to my Pinterest account and pin whichever (or all) to your own boards from there. Sorry for the inconvenience and hopefully it’ll get resolved soon!
