Styling Sequins After the Holidays: Why You Need Sparkle

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

With the request from Cathy about styling sequins after the holidays, it made me think about why we really need sparkle in our life.
Maybe it’s one of the reasons that Christmas time is so popular because we light up the darker days with twinkle lights and pull out all of our sequins and finery?

Yet hopefully, with our recent ideas of styling sequins after the holidays, you will be confident with wearing them even on the most casual outing.

Quote of the day: “If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security. It may mean a giving up of familiar but limiting patterns, safe but unrewarding work, values no longer believed in, relationships that have lost their meaning. As Dostoevsky put it, ‘Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.’ The real fear should be of the opposite course.” Gail Sheehy from Passages: Predictable Crises of Adult Life

This quote really resonates with me as I believe that we should evolve as the years go by. Sure, you may like your life now including your style, but there is so much more to experience. Even our clothing can be thought of as a way to grow.

Did you know that trying new styling and putting together different outfits is a way to increase our brain growth? It creates new pathways for our neurons which is something we can all use to keep us young and active.

It’s easy to wear our sparkle when everyone else is wearing theirs but is it scary to think about styling sequins after the holidays? If so, I hope you check out how Charlotte made her sequin top more subtle and how even a dress can be made to be casual.
And Lesley is sharing how this is out of her comfort zone, and spoiler alert, she liked it!

Real Thoughts About Styling Sequins After the Holidays

You may think that both my mom and Lesley love all of the ideas I put together for this blog. Suffice it to say that because we are all real women with our own preferences, that is not the case, haha. Yet I give them both kudos and tons of credit for trying many of the ideas. Especially when it comes to my reader’s suggestions.

So let me share Lesley’s words when I gave her the idea about styling sequins after the holidays: “This was another box pusher for me. Sequins are for a party, not a casual day.  I have a jacket that is years old with sparkle and bling all over it, but no sequins and it is something I would ONLY wear for a party.

Therefore, I hit the local thrift stores and found this tee that I would style for a party as well as casual time. Since it is a bit baggy, I belted it and was surprised and comfortable with the look.  Belting a top is not something I usually feel comfortable with (another box pushed open through this blog).

I was surprised that it was a very comfy outfit and very fun with the sequins. I may just keep this top out and handy to see how else I can style it. PUSH MY STYLE SELF”

I love the ending of “push my style self”. Truly I think it’s a real thing and I’m happy that Lesley has embraced at least the idea of styling sequins after the holidays. I’m not sure I’ll ever get her wearing combat boots, but it’s all about baby steps, right?

Dissecting this Sequin Top

What makes this particular sequin top a bit easier to wear after the holidays? I think a couple of details play a part. One is that it’s really a cotton t-shirt with sequins adorning only part of it. Second, the top is very loose and boxy, and not fitted. Because of this, it’s not your sexy item that you think about for parties. NOT that you couldn’t wear this for a party. And I bet Lesley will at some time.

Yet the biggest factor of styling this sequin top after the holidays is how Lesley made it look the part of an everyday look with her white turtleneck layered under it and then pairing it with her jeggings and ankle booties.

Every day we have to get dressed if we are going out in public. Yet you have a ton of choices about how you want to make an appearance. Adding sparkle to an everyday look is nothing short of saying that you are happy and are ready to have a good day.
It’s that magical property of sparkle and shine that gives us all a mood boost.

Insider tip: There are many ways to add sparkle to your everyday look. It doesn’t have to be with sequins. Just think of how your accessories can play a huge factor.

Sparkle Earrings

While the idea about styling the sequins for after the holidays is to make it more casual and everyday, sparkle earrings can still play a part in the equation. While you may not want to have a ton of extra sparkle all over your body, it’s nice to have one or two other elements in the look to tie it all together.

Lesley tied the sequins together on her top by wearing sparkly earrings.

And as she is showing, not all of the accessories have to be sparkly. You can see how her purse is very casual and basically blends into the rest of the outfit.

Belting a T-Shirt

Now let’s talk about belts. I know, I know, you’re thinking the last place you want any attention is the middle of your body. But let’s also remember that when we wear something big and boxy, we tend to look bigger and boxier.

Reality check: I am not in any way, shape, or form proposing that it’s important to look thinner or any type of “er”. Yet when we look put together, we feel better about ourselves.
Having a “shape” should be considered a good thing and curves are a wonderful shape. Let’s stop wishing we weren’t as curvy or that they were located here but not there.

That’s why I was super impressed that Lesley added a belt to this t-shirt. Lesley is a self-proclaimed zucchini-shaped woman (her words, not mine) and normally you do see her in more of the tunic tops. Yet, adding the belt to this large t-shirt gives a wonderful shape to the look.

In fact, don’t her legs look a mile long this way?

And notice, you don’t really focus on the belt. Just because you wear a belt, doesn’t mean it has to be the center of attention. Instead, it can be doing a job like pulling in extra fabric. That’s why having a couple of skinny belts is smart.

Insider tip: In fact, I’ve used thinner belts to “shorten” a sweater here and here.

Grey Booties

The other detail that I love about Lesley’s look is how she opted for lighter booties. Black booties are definitely basic (as we have shown here), but these lighter grey booties give the outfit a lighter look which ties in nicely with the white turtleneck.
If you don’t have a pair of white booties, then the light grey ones might be a great idea because they will go with your white jeans and lighter looks so well.

It’s also nice to see that Lesley let the jeggings pool around the top of the ankle boots. Too many times we stress over the “right” way to wear them. Should we cuff the jeans, tuck them in or do a variety of other shenanigans?
Sometimes the best thing to do is let them be and go with the flow.

Baby Steps

So if you like the idea of styling sequins after the holidays but are still a tad wary, you might think about sequin-trimmed items instead of all-out sequins. Then your sparkle is not as obvious, but you are still showing the world that it’s going to be a happy day.
