Styling our Velvet Pants for Winter
Styling our velvet pants for winter seems obvious. This is one material you just have to admit lends itself to the cold weather.
Quote of the day: “The purpose of life is to be happy.” Dalai Lama
Yep! I totally agree with this quote. It’s not about looking thin or wearing what is age appropriate. Instead it’s about finding joy with our clothes and feeling good with what we put on our bodies. Since it’s the winter, there are certain materials and items that seem perfect for this season.
Velvet is one of those great winter materials. I know at first, I was worried that the velvet would rub off if I bought a pair of velvet jeans. And maybe it will. But geez, then that means I wore them a ton, and that’s a good thing.
Surprisingly all 3 of us have burgundy velvet pants, so I had us style them with fur vests. Our vests are all very different, which goes to show how versatile these velvet pants can be.

Why I Wore This Outfit
You could say I have a fur vest obsession. I remember getting my first one over 6 years ago thinking I’d probably only wear it for a year. And here it is YEARS later and I still love them. One of my favorite tricks is wearing it over a jacket. Like Nancy did in this post from last year.
I just purchased this pink one recently, and I love the lighter color. If pink and burgundy don’t go together then I’m a monkey’s uncle. Talk about a great way to lighten up the winter outfits.

If you don’t like your ankles exposed in the cold weather, then white boots are a stylish option instead of sneakers. Of course most of you already have black booties too, so that’s another great option.
And let’s talk about these fabulous shoes. Lesley who has been joining our blog occasionally this last year bought them for my for my birthday. The words on them are “Live, Love, Laugh” and that’s me in a nutshell! Even though they are floralish and lighter in color, I’ll be wearing them all season. Because we all need more love and laughter in our lives.

Why Nancy Wore This Outfit
These pants are actually part of a velvet suit that Nancy bought for a wedding years ago. She’s worn the jacket before with jeans, which is the perfect way to split up your suits. And adding in a faux fur vest with the pants is a great winter addition.
Nancy looks good in black, so I had her wear this combination. The blouse adds a little interest to the outfit, but it’d look just as fun with a black t-shirt.

I always like the tops when they hang out underneath a topper. However, I know most of us were raised to have the outermost layer be the longest. You could easily do that by tucking in your blouse. Even if you’re like Nancy, and don’t usually tuck your tops, in this case, the vest hangs down enough to make your top half appear longer.
This vest was given to Nancy from her friend, Karen. Karen thought that it would look good on the blog, and I think she’s right. It’s wonderful on Nancy because it’s shorter, and not overwhelming on her frame.
And just like we styled our leopard coats last week, the animal prints are SO in style right now.

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit
Burgundy isn’t exactly a neutral, yet I think it’s such a popular winter color. So I had my mom wear a brown fur vest and her leopard shoes for this outfit.
Since garnets are my mom’s birthstone, she has an abundance of the stones, and that’s what she wore for her accessories.

If you aren’t a fan of the fur vests, then there are many other vest options to add a little warmth, yet they aren’t as warm as a jacket. For instance there are lightweight vests, fleece vests, and quilted vests which would all look as nice.
This fur vest used to be my mom’s fur coat. Back in my mom’s day, it was fashionable to have a fur coat. Even if you don’t believe in them now, it’s also hard on the environment to throw them out. So why not get some use out of it?
Therefore, I took the coat and removed the sleeves. The silhouette of the sleeves were slightly old fashioned, and mom didn’t really dress up much anymore to wear the coat out. Yet now it’s a perfect vest that can be worn even with jeans. She wore it 2 years ago on the blog when we were talking about wearing white in the winter.
Tips & Tricks
I don’t think velvet will really go out of style. It’s one of those materials we think of as dressy, yet it can be made casual now too. I bet you have some in your closet. Pull it out. Wear it. Have fun with it.
As for the fur vests, they may be a passing trend, but I don’t think that should stop you from having at least one. One of my first blog posts was about the fur vest and that was 4 years ago, and all 3 of us wore the same one. That’s why I shopped for some other fur vests for you below. There are such a variety of them now, whether you like the fur portion only at the neckline or all over. And you don’t have to spend a lot of money on them.
I’m also working on putting out a video biweekly now. My focus is going to be Ways to Wear a certain item. It’s my favorite thing to figure out many varieties of how to wear items in our closet. So I started with this one about fur vests. Let me know what you think and make sure to subscribe to get all the videos.
Thanks to my niece, Vanessa, who let us come to her restaurant and take these photos of us styling our velvet pants inside since it was COLD this day. If you’re ever in Golden, Colorado, you’ll have to check out Colorado Plus Cidery. They make their own cider here and the food is outstanding too!!
That photo where we are all licking the spoons? That’s the marshmallow creme she had just made for the whoopie pies. Yes, we got one. You betcha, it was delicious!!
