Outdoor Summer Event Outfit for Sitting

Quote of the day: “Remember that happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.” Roy Goodman

Finding the perfect summer event outfit shouldn’t be too hard. By now, we’ve had a lot of experience in attending these sitting events. For example, many of us go to outdoor concerts or fireworks display!! Even going to the baseball games could be included in this (although I’d be wearing my Rockies t-shirt!!)

I thought this category would pair nicely with the last post about what you could wear when your day includes a ton of walking! Either way, you want your summer event outfit to be comfortable, yet stylish, right? And for this category, the shoes may not be the object of primary importance, but what you wear on the bottom half of your body could be!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: For my summer event outfit, I chose my maxi dress!

This dress is one of those fabulous deals that I picked up from Charming Charlies when they were having their $10 sale! I think that any woman could wear a fun maxi like this for the summer! If you like there are always print versions or solid colored versions available.

Now I’ve heard that many of you don’t like the open shoulder shirts or dresses, but I have to tell you when I see them on others, I find them so flattering! Maybe I have a love affair with shoulders?

A maxi dress for a summer event outfit for women over 50

Of course, I brought along a cardigan for the look!

I’m always carting around some kind of cover up or jacket in case it gets cold. This particular cardigan is probably over 7 years old and is perfect for the summertime. I wear it often to cover up my shoulders from the sun too! These crochet cardigans are what I’d consider a necessity for my summer outfits. I could even make the case for getting a couple in different colors like this short one or even a longer one!

I even grabbed my crochet earrings that I’ve had for ages. I don’t wear these earrings that often, because they used to get lost in my curly hair. Being able to see my earrings easier is definitely an advantage to shorter hair!!

Women 50+ and Outdoor, summer event fashion

For my footwear, I figured I’d keep with the flats since most of the concerts we would attend would be on the grass.

I bought these gladiator sandals last year and have been pleasantly surprised at how much I wear them. I wouldn’t usually consider olive green a summer color that much, but they’ve been a great neutral for many outfits. Even if you think the gladiator sandals are something you’ll pass on, this pair of sandals just brings the kid out in you, don’t you think?

And I carried the same cross body bag that I had worn in the previous post.

I don’t have a ton of these kinds of purses, yet this one matched both of my outfits so perfectly!! If we continue having so much fun at the summer outings, I might need to invest in a lighter colored bag!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: For Nancy’s summer event outfit that involved a lot of sitting, she grabbed her capri pants!

Nancy had embraced the capris for years, and so has several pair. This brown print pair have a tie closure at the end that she just loves!!

I also submitted an article to Sixty + Me about these Capri Pants! I explore the different aspects of how you can find a pair that works for your body!! If the article isn’t published yet, you can always sign up for their newsletter.

How to Look Great and be Comfortable while sitting outdoors at a summer event

Nancy grabbed her chartreuse sandals that she picked up last year for her footwear!

These sandals have the cutest tassel on the end of the ties. We usually tie them to the back because you don’t see them as much when they are in front!!

And just in case you don’t have a pair of sandals with tassels on them, there are plenty of opportunities to fix that snafu!! Heck, this pair and this pair are even under $20 right now.  We all know that it’s a gamble to buy shoes online, but at least Nordstrom is good about returns!!

Sitting, Summer and Sun

The top portion of Nancy’s outfit was dictated by the color of the shoes.

She wanted to tie in the same color somewhere else in her look, so Nancy chose this shirt. It may be a t-shirt, but at least it’s a t-shirt with some detailing. There’s the small ruffles on the hem of the sleeves, and the gold buttons in the front of it.

If you seem to have a ton of t-shirts in your closet, then I’ve touched upon the subject of how to incorporate them into your outfit many times. You can tell it’s a common theme since t-shirts are the most posted about in the categories under Tops-Knit Shirt/T-Shirt!

What to wear to an Outdoor Sitting Event in the Summer

The last addition to Nancy’s outfit was her accessories.

She just purchased this choker necklace and I think it’s perfect for this look! Many of you might have worn choker necklaces in your younger years! But I see no reason you can’t wear them again. Even if you’re not sure about them, you certainly don’t have to spend a lot of money on the item. And you might find how much you like the look. You could start with a couple of different colored chokers or stick with a gold one!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom chose to wear knit pants for ease of sitting for her summer event outfit!

She’s had these pants for over 10 years back when the knits were so in style. Right now, most of us would think to call them leggings, but hers do not have the spandex in them. But either kind would work fabulous for the summer where you are sitting on a lawn chair or blanket!

If you think that leggings would be too hot for the summer months, you could be right. However, there are the capri length versions or even cut out versions too!

Comfy Clothes for Sitting

When the three of us were at the Botanic Gardens, we saw a woman carrying a parasol.

We thought that was such a smart idea to keep the sun off your body! And it might not surprise you that my mother has one of these parasols from her trip to Hong Kong.

What a fabulous idea for women who want to keep shaded but don’t want to mess up their hair with a hat!! Here’s one that looked like it stepped off the pages of Mary Poppins or here’s a more exotic one!

An Umbrella for keeping off the Sun

My mom did include her hat in the outfit too!!

This hat isn’t as much for shade as it is for style! Although wearing something in order to look stylish is never a bad thing, right? If your goal for your head covering is to also create some shade, then this one would be perfect! Or if you want a little more color in your hat wear, then look no further than this one!

I can’t forget to point out my mom’s earrings! Maybe I’ve been focusing on fun earrings too much lately, but they really are such an inexpensive way to add in whimsey to your outfit. I found this pair that are the epitome of summer, don’t you think? Or would you wear this pair?

Women 70+ at an Outdoor Summer Event

The rest of mom’s outfit came together because she usually pairs this tunic with these pants.

I know many of us wear tunics with our leggings. But have you though about how many tunics could be interchanged with a swimsuit cover up or vice versa? What a great concept for your vacation!! This tunic would work wonderfully for an evening out since it’s sheer, and then why not use it over your bathing suit? If you’d rather have a sleeveless version for your summer tunic, then this one might be perfect.

I rounded up some items that you could include in your summer event outfit for the day!!

  • That parasol is gorgeous! I used to have a few when I was younger and a bit of a ‘goth’ as my paleness was everything – I don’t think I could manage to wear black in the sun, parasol or not, these days though! Haha. I love your maxi dress too. <3 #FridayFrivolity

    • How funny you say that about the black, Jessica. I just had a reader ask for some ways to wear black in the summer, so a couple of post are coming out next week with that theme!! It’s not my usual, but I know a lot of women love wearing black!!

  • Sue Loncaric

Love a maxi Jodie and as usual you all look great! I’m loving the parasol. Thanks so much for linking up and sharing with us at #overthemoon link party. I’ve shared on social media. Have a great week and see you at the next OTM.
Sue from Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Sue!!
I have to admit, I love this parasol idea…I might just have to buy one for myself!!

  • I’m not a huge fan of the cold shoulder dress for me. But I do like to see it on other women. I have quite broad shoulders, and being petite this can make me look a little boxy. If that makes sense! I think you look fabulous in this one odie xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

I totally get that Laurie!! Maybe that’s why many women don’t like them?? I do have a cold shoulder top that isn’t my fave–but I did really love this dress!!

  • Mrsmummyharris86

that dress is beautiful! definitely weather appropriate right now!!!! #ablogginggoodtime

Love all the outfits!! I really love how they’re all very vibrant and those vibrant colors just look happy. They’re perfect summer looks and I really like your maxi dress. So it’s so flowy and airy!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much Rach!! I have learned to love a maxi, so now I may need to get more!!

  • I live in maxi dresses in the summer! I’m loving the lace up sandals too. And that parasol is so pretty! All really cute summer outfits!
    Jeans and a Teacup

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Jessica!! I do think I need a couple more maxis–they are perfect for summer!!

  • It always amazes me how you manage to get not just one, but THREE cute outfits coordinated for your blog posts, dear Jodie!! And on three different models, no less!! So much to love about each of these looks…your pretty maxi dress, olive gladiators (next to black and white, olive is my favourite colour!) and cute floral cross-body bag; Nancy’s black and white choker necklace (of course!) and those chartreuse sandals (um, can I have yet another fave colour?); and your mom’s divine parasol and über-cute parrot earrings!! You ladies will certainly be the stars of every summer “sitting event” you attend!! XOXO

    • Jodie Filogomo

Awww Monika!! That’s the nicest comment !! Thanks for including my moms in your positive words–I’ll make sure to forward this to them so they can smile too!!

  • Jodie, I love your dress so much! I can’t believe it was only $10! The gladiators are the perfect shoes with it. And the cross body bag is so cute. I have tried on so many different styles of cold shoulder and off the shoulder pieces and they never look right on me. I will keep trying though. Maybe one day I will find a piece that makes me feel confident! But for now, as much as I love the trend on others, you will not be seeing it on me. I also love Nancy’s and Charlotte’s easy summer outfits! All the bright colors are so fabulous for the warmer weather. As always, you ladies are killing it! By the way, your short hair is absolutely stunning!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I know –isn’t that the best deal ever?? Now I’m just waiting for another $10 day from Charming Charlie’s so I can get some more goodies!!
Thanks for all of the love,Shelbee!! I know mom and Nancy love reading these comments that I forward to them!!

  • Oh I do love your dress. What a versatile piece that could be dressed up or down! The fabric is lovely. I also loved your mum’s parasol! Thank you for linking up to #ablogginggoodtime 🎉

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much, Catie!! I almost think I need my own parasol–I can see the advantage of them!!

  • Rebecca Phillips

I love, love, love the dress and yellow sandals. I am starting to accumulate a collection of comfy long dresses. Pinnned!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Rebecca!! Considering how much I like dresses, I’m surprised I haven’t embraced the maxis long before now. I guess I’ll just have to make up for lost time..ha ha!

  • Three perfect looks for an outdoor event! Loving your maxi, Jodie! The cold-shoulder sleeve is a unique twist and the colors are perfect on you! And how fun is your mom’s parasol?! Love it! I’ve got to get myself one 🙂 That’ll get the neighborhood to talking 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Mary!!
I do wonder why we don’t use parasols that much here in the states? It’s more about sunscreen—but then there’s chemicals!! I may have to buy myself one now!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

Oh these are all darling! I especially LOVE your cold shoulder maxi, even with the cardigan. You look so bohemian 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Terri!! And this is something I would have never tried a couple of years ago!!

  • All of these looks are perfect for an outdoor event! Your maxi dress is so pretty and i love your crochet sweater!

    Doused In Pink

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jill!!

  • I love that you are talking about sitting vs standing! THat is something I always think about! If I am standing, I want a head to toe fabulous outfit, but if I am sitting, I really focus on my top half since that is what people will see & also something that is more comfortable to sit in 🙂

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s so smart to think that way Michelle. Even at work, there are times, if you’re sitting, that your pants never get seen!

  • Debbie Stinedurf

Okay, let’s try this again…I commented from my phone and it vanished. I love this dress on you Jodie, the color is beautiful! And your mom’s parasol is such a cool and unique idea. A maxi is perfect for sitting on the ground while still looking fabulous.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Don’t you hate that when technology doesn’t cooperate?? It’s like reasoning with a 2 year old…ha ha!!
Thanks Debbie for trying again…sometimes I just give up…

  • ADA

I loved the cold-shoulder style back a decade ago when it was trending and I love it even more now. In my capsule wardrobe I too included a cold-shoulder maxi dress. I love your dress so much and the bohemian vibes you added to this outfit. Your hair looks so hot and the dress’ colors compliment it. Congrats!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Ada!! I had never seen this trend before a couple of years ago, but I really think it can work so nicely for any woman!!

  • I think this dress is my favorite look on you ever! I just love the print and pattern!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Roxanne!! I really love it too—now it makes me want to buy another one!!

  • Your mom’s umbrella is beautiful!! Reminds me of Japan! All the ladies carried them to keep the sun off their skin. And I love all your outfits. I also agree that anyone can be comfy in a maxi dress for the summer. I’m always carting around a cardigan just in case too. Haha.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think that’s so interesting that they carry these umbrellas in Japan. So obviously it must not rain much, because wouldn’t they disintegrate in the rain??

  • I love all the lovely colors of your outfits! =) That cold shoulder dress is stunning by the way! =)

    – Cielo
    Mermaid in Heels

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Cielo!!
I’m super glad I ordered it–you just never know until you try it on!!

  • I love your cold shoulder look. This post is very timely, Mr Mutton and I will be going to a concert in Hyde Park soon. Of course we may need an umbrella as well!

    • Jodie Filogomo

That’s very smart to take an umbrella (a real one, not paper, I’m assuming you mean?). But there’s other goodies to take too—food, water, blankets …..
I bet you have a fabulous time, Gail!!

  • Everybody is cute and fun for this outing. A parasol is a great idea, a notion that harks back to the Italian Renaissance and back 2000 years in China.

Your crochet sweater is lovely, too. Will a dab of Superglue fix Nancy’s tassel?

I’m trying to reframe my thoughts about bare shoulders. I’ve seen some tops with kind of a lattice insert down a 3/4 sleeve that might work. Charlotte and I are in the same camp about our arms.

When I came out of a cool grocery store this morning wearing a polo-style shirt into bright sunshine and a hotter car, I might have welcomed bare shoulders.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Jean!!
I think that’s a brilliant idea of the superglue for Nancy’s sandals—I forwarded this comment to her so hopefully she’s remember to do that soon!! The tassels just make these so cute, so I’d hate for her to lose it!!
I have to say that I remember bathing my grandmother when she was older, and thinking that she had such lovely shoulders and back. Maybe that’s why I love the thought of still showing our parts that haven’t changed over the years as much? Not that I think changing and wrinkles are bad–they aren’t. But I know we feel more comfortable otherwise!
I’m on a mission to style my mom’s open shoulder shirt tomorrow when we are taking photos. It’s not her fave either, but there could be times like you just said that the functionality is perfect!!

  • I’m so much in love with this new hair of yours, Jodie. It’s so spunky and sassy, and makes you really look picture-ready, seriously. And I agree. Bared shoulders are so sexy. A hint of skin just ups the appeal, I always find 🙂 so it should come as no surprise that I adore your maxi xoxo

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks for saying that about my hair Sheela…because I did agonize over it for a couple months before cutting it!! I have always loved long, flowy hair, but I just don’t have good hair like you do! So I might as well make it so it shows off my personality—short & sassy!!
I think the exposed shoulders are so nice too. That’s why it always surprises me that some women don’t like this look??

  • Nicole Mölders

Wow, in that long dress I would buy when you said that you are Jessica J.’s sister. You look so romantic in this look.

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Nicole—that is so sweet!!

  • Love all of these summer looks Jodie! I am obsessed with your maxi dress. The print is so perfect for summer!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Kathrine…it was definitely a great buy! And considering I’ve had my shares of bad buys, it’s nice to know I get it right sometimes, ha ha!

  • Theses are amazing looks Jodie! I love a hat or a parasol for outdoor events! The sun can be brutal and ruin a nice event. Don’t you love it when you find a deal on a fun dress. I recently found one for under $30 and was so excited! Peace!
    Cheryl Tucker

    • Jodie Filogomo

Getting a great deal is quite a rush, I think!! Especially when it’s a fabulous item!!
      Thanks Cheryl!!

  • Living on Cloud Nine

Perfect outfits for outdoor festivities! Ahhh a sweet parasol! Perfect for the hot sun and so stylish!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Andrea!!
I never even think of a parasol—but how perfect, right??

  • Loving all of the color each of you incorporated in your looks! Charlotte is too cute in her fedora and the parrot earrings are adorable. Nancy’s tassel sandals are so fun and are a great way to brighten up a look. Seriously love your maxi dress and cannot believe what a steal it was!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Jennie!!

  • Judy Gramith

It’s impossible not to see the charm of carrying a parasol!! Our Charlotte is once again ahead of
the pack in wisdom and style! I can’t believe how many women foolishly continue to sunbathe despite years of warnings from the medical community to avoid overexposure. I also love Charlotte’s cute tunic.
Nancy appears to be having fun testing out her gymnastic skills in those pretty sandals. The tassels, tied at the back are so cute and her top compliments them beautifully!
Your feather print dress is perfection with your coloring and hair Jodie!! I don’t think the cold shoulder look is as flattering on rounded shoulders but you wear this look so well! For me, there is too much competition between the pattern and texture of a crochet shrug worn with a lively print. My fallback is usually a standard blue or white jean jacket or one in a color. I recently nabbed a light beige, jean jacket with a 3/4 sleeve at a consignment shop! Your new hairstyle is SO cute on you!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I can’t tell you how much I wish I hadn’t sunbathed too, Jude! But it was the 80’s then…the time of Bain de Soleil, right? If only I could have embraced my whiteness back then—I’d have so many fewer scars from skin cancer!! But I do think that women have to learn it themselves…you hear it, but don’t always take heed until it’s too late!!
Thanks for all of your wonderful thoughts Jude! We were laughing at how my hair almost looked reddish in these photos—from the lighting, the dress? Of course, my mom was a red head, so maybe it’s coming out since I haven’t been dying it??
That’s so interesting about the crochet and the print dress seeming too much. I can totally see what you mean now, but I always think about this cardigan as a beige one—not the fact that it’s “crochet” texture!! I certainly have a plain beige cardigan too—next time I’ll try that one!! 🙂

  • Karen Anderson

Definitely loving your dress, and I can’t believe it was only $10!! What a find! This is a great outfit with or without the cardigan. Having attended many outdoor concerts (the Cleveland Orchestra has a ‘summer home’ within a few miles of where I live), I have often worn maxi dresses. We usually sit on a blanket on the lawn, and these dresses work perfectly for that. I love the color or your dress! Nancy always wears capris so well. I have zero luck with those. I know it’s all about where they hit you on your leg, and she seems to nail it every time! LOVE her shoes!!!! Your mom’s earrings are truly special – like you said, the perfect touch of whimsy and so summery! If anyone had an authentic parasol, it would have to be your mom!! That one is beautiful and would be so much fun to carry. The parasol itself is a wonderful accessory to her outfit! I can very much see a tunic with some cropped leggings for an event where there was going to be a lot of sitting. Each of you made great choices for what to wear to these events!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Karen!
I feel like the maxis are made for outdoor concerts, really…..it’s that boho vibe and ease that makes them perfect!! And even though my husband is not a huge lover of boho, even he likes this dress!! Always a plus!!
I know what you mean about capris—in fact, I’ve only purchased them recently. But I think it’s like anything—finding the right style & fit can make all the difference!!

  • donnanance

Jodie, I love your dress (even tho I’m one of the gals who doesn’t wear cold shoulder or off the shoulder tops). Your cardigan is just perfect with it, and the sandals and cross body bag just tops it off. Nancy’s sandals are the star of her outfit. Good idea about tying them in the back so the tassels show. Her whole outfit is stylish, yet comfy. Love the colors in your mom’s tunic. And the parasol…so cute… Her earrings are fabulous and would be a good conversation starter. This whole post is about having fun and lookin’ good!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I’ve heard so many women comment that they don’t love the open shoulder shirts. Since you are one of those, I’d love to hear why you don’t love them, Donna? It’s always so interesting to me to hear the reasoning behind our likes and dislikes!! And funny, how our first impressions can be one thing and then change down the road!!
Nancy was just saying that one of these tassels on her shoes is starting to tear….and we don’t know how to save it. They are such the best feature of the shoes….I guess that’s what happens when items get worn lots??

      • donnanance

I guess I’m not much of a trend follower. Please don’t add the word “boring”…ha! So many ladies wear this look very successfully so it can’t be all bad, right? Actually my ten year old granddaughter wore a darling cold shoulder dress for her fifth grade graduation. You have so many interesting ladies commenting on your posts.

        • Jodie Filogomo

You should ask your granddaughter if you wore a cold shoulder dress like hers, would she like that or think it’s silly??
I know many times the younger ones like it when we older folks wear the newer styles. Sometimes I think it’s us–that get in the way of trying new things???

  • I read somewhere (maybe it was here, lol) that the “cold shoulder” look is perfect for “more mature” women because shoulders don’t show signs of aging (compared to many of our other parts)…. I think you look LOVELY in yours…and for $10?!!! A steal with style!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Maybe I did say that, Em—but I’ve heard it from others too!! And I think it’s so true. I know my mom is always concerned about the under portion of the arm—so why not cover that part and show off the top part?? My mom has one of these shirts, and I think I need to twist her arm to wear it again! She’s not the hugest fan, but sometimes seeing it over and over helps!!

      • (The crowd begins to chant their encouragement:)

        • Jodie Filogomo

You crack me up, Em!! I’m totally doing it now–we’ll be taking photos tomorrow, so I’ll pull it out!! 🙂

  • Obsessed with your dress Jodie.

    Gemma x

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Gemma!!
It is one of those great finds that I don’t have regret about buying!!
