Wearing your Capri Pants for a Casual Day

Wearing your Capri Pants for a Casual Day

Quote of the day: “Whatever can be done another day can be done today.” Michel de Montaigne

Capri pants seem to have a terrible reputation in the fashion world. If you have ever read articles regarding this item, most will caution you about this and that so you don’t appear cut off at the legs or  look frumpy! And I get those points to a degree. But let’s also be realistic in the fact, that most of us older women are wearing shorts less often and still need to be cool in the hotter months!

I wrote an article for Sixty + Me about these beloved pieces. And I think I made some good points along the way. But you may not agree and it’s good to hear all of the different opinions!! Join in below in the comments, and tell me your thoughts and experiences!!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: Of course I’ve see in retail lately the term capri pants used for many other pants styles other than the “official” capri.

Like cropped pants could be the new term to try to give the capri pants new life?? I’ve even had a couple of readers comment on how the cropped flares look good because they even out their hips and hide thicker calves!! Another good reason to try on styles you may not normally wear!!

These pants that I’m wearing were gifted to me from Fabrizio Gianni 2 years ago when they sent us our jeans! I’d never worn them because I didn’t really love them, but now that I’m seeing more of the wider cropped pants, it made me want to reconsider them. I also shortened them about 3 inches!

I know part of the issue with the shorter pants can be that your proportions can be skewed to look cut off.

Therefore a pair of capri pants that matches your complexion along with the same colored shoes could fix that issue. At least that’s what I’m telling myself with these, LOL!

The other way to lengthen your legs would be to tuck in your shirt, or lower the neckline of the shirt.

Capri Pants for a Casual day

Speaking of shirts, I have a love/hate relationship with mine.

I love the color and the fact that it’s more fitted at the bottom. But when I wear it up on my shoulders, it tends to gape open easily. I will wear a camisole under it, but that makes it hotter. Therefore for this day, I also tried to pull it down as an off the shoulder shirt. It didn’t stay off the shoulders when I moved a ton, but I liked the look.

The off the shoulder shirts are quite popular right now. As much as the strapless bra is not my favorite, for some reason exposing the shoulders is so pretty! One idea I’ve seen is to wear the off the shoulder shirt with your bra showing. If the bra matches the shirt, then it looks like an open shoulder shirt! I could imagine it with this shirt or this one.

Purple & Yellow with my tan Capris

And the finishing touches on my outfit are the accessories.

I added in a different color with the yellow necklace and purse. I had an ulterior motive for wearing this heavier necklace. I was hoping it would hold the shirt from falling forward too much!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy’s capris are a newer pair with embroidery on the pant legs and pockets.

Embroidery is definitely a stylish trend right now! If you’re going to get a new pair of capris, then why not try this detail?  I’ve seen it on the blue jeans and white jeans!

Wearing a shorter cardigan can also be a trick to getting the proportion right with your capris.

If you are someone who likes to cover up your arms with tank tops or sleeveless dresses, these are the best. There are always a variety of fun, short cardigans available. This particular one is not too fitted, and this one comes in many colors and sizes!

Capri pants for summer with embellishments

Even though there is red and green in the embroidery on the capri pants, I think you should be able to wear other colors with these pants.

These multi color shoes are one way to bring in other colors. My love of print shoes knows no bounds, so if you need a pair, let me show you the way! Leopard print shoes work for any season and any occasion! But floral shoes are the perfect way to bring in the summer and mules are huge right now!!

Since the shoes have some blue coloring in them, I thought it’d look nice to incorporate that blue into Nancy’s accessories.

The blue glass in the bracelet always reminds me of tropical waters! This necklace is one that would look great too! Or these earrings have the coolest design with a necklace that’s similar!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: My mom only has a couple of capri pants in her closet.

This olive green pair are the modern pants she wore for our post of how to make a floral shirt non-frumpy last year!

When my mom and I talked about this outfit, she wanted to wear a green shirt so it would match.

But I talked her out of that thought and paired the capri pants with this striped top instead. If you don’t have a striped top in your collection yet, then this is the time to add one! I can’t believe how much I love them lately. I think part of the reason, is they add more pizzazz than the solid colored shirt. And if you want to try your hand at print mixing, they are the easy way to do it!

The nice thing is the striped shirts come in many colors and many designs for not too much money!

70+ Looking Stylish

To add in some brightness to mom’s outfit, she grabbed her color, bead necklace.

I had suggested a floral necklace, but my mom thought it was too fancy for this outfit! I do think that having a necklace with  many colors in it, makes it so versatile. For example, this one isn’t as big, but would still add in great color to many outfits! Or this one incorporates many different colors too!

Over 70 and Mixing Colors

You can see that my mom paired her beige sandals with her capri pants outfit.

Just like nude shoes for the other months, nude sandals are a definite must have for the summer too. Especially if you love wearing lots of colors in the summer, then they go with everything! If you like the ankle straps because they make walking easier, then this pair is very modern! But the mules are very popular now too, so these could be fun also!

And wasn’t my mom very modern by grabbing a light blue purse, instead of one that matches her outfit??
