Wearing our Stylish Winter Wool Coats
We wore our stylish winter wool coats for a trip up to Georgetown, Colorado.
Quote of the day: “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” Dalai Lama
I’m sure the Dalai Lama didn’t mean this saying in how I’m interpreting it. Because choosing the right stylish winter wool coat for the season can certainly make you happy. To me warmth is happiness especially if you live in Colorado in the winter.
We grabbed our friend, Lesley who has been part of our blog from time to time now. I met Lesley at our Chicos event, and we’ve become wonderful friends. It’s funny how life introduces us to certain people at different times of our lives.
The 5 of us traveled up to the mountains, to a small town called Georgetown for the day. It was the perfect opportunity to showcase our winter outerwear since the temperatures were below 40 degrees and with the wind it felt even colder. We also styled our puffer coats on this outing in this post.
I feel like stylish winter wool coats are something most of us already have in our closets. The advantage of being an older woman, is we already have many great pieces in our closet, and you can easily update them with some fun accessories.
And I love how all of our coats are so varied. Different lengths and different colors to give you different looks.

Why I Wore This Outfit
This coat is one of my mother’s creations. I’ve worn it before on the blog when it’s really cold. It may not look super heavy, but it’s pretty darn warm. Of course I had to add in all kinds of color with my accessories. I layered 2 hand knit scarves, a red one and a white one. Then the hat is another print while the mittens are pink.
And these Jambu boots have been a life saver. I threw out my 30 year old pair of Sorels when I got these because these are SO lightweight. Yet they are super warm and comfy. In fact, they are no longer available, so I must not be the only one that thinks that they are a wonderful pair of boots.
I bought this hat recently because it lights up. You can kinda see it in my December highlights post in our selfie from this mountain visiting day. It’s funny because it will flicker with one push of the button, stay on constantly with another, or blink slowly with another click. If we are out at night, you can bet I’ll be wearing this one to be seen easily! I found the same one only with a red and white background if you’re interested.
Lesley’s (60+) Outfit
Why Lesley Wore This Outfit
“When I am an old woman, I shall wear red and purple,” is the quote that came to mind when Lesley started putting this outfit together. This coat is her go to coat for the winter. She loves the length and of course the color. In fact, the bright, cheery red makes her feel happy even in the cold winters. It’s amazing how color can affect us that way.
She was laughing when she told me that it’s important to have a cross-body purse on these excursions for hands free shopping. Either that or in case of a snow ball fight….LOL! Since there was no snow on this trip, we were all safe.
Lesley is overtaking me in her fabulous knitting skills. She made this scarf and I almost tried to steal it off of her. Isn’t it just amazing?? The colors pull the hat and coat together so perfectly. And it’s a heavy enough scarf to actually keep you warm in the frigid cold. If I didn’t have a boat load of yarn in my mom’s basement, I might have to go buy some of this and recreate it.
Nancy’s (70+) Outfit
Why Nancy Wore This Outfit
Nancy adores this coat and has had it for over 10 years. She bought it on a girl’s trip to Santa Fe (I was with her) because she has always loved the Aztec designs. It’s not super heavy, but it’s one of those you can layer under it easily because it’s not fitted.
The scarf she’s wearing is one of my creations from years ago. The only bad thing is Nancy’s neck is sensitive to wool. It makes her itchy, so she can only wear this scarf with a turtleneck.
And even though we tend to think of straw purses as a summer item, they can come out in the winter too. Especially when they are a fun color like this olive green.
I love that the fringe hanging out under the hem of the coat almost looks like part of the coat. You notice this especially from the back view. If you’re anything like me, then it’s not always easy to layer and have the under piece hang out beneath. Yet this is a modern style, and can create an entirely new look. So try it and don’t automatically think it’s bad.

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit
My mom is always cold like me, so she appreciates the longer wool coats for the blustery days. She bought this one when she was still working at the alterations department in Ohio. The traditional camel coat really never goes out of style, so she though it was time to get one.
Of course, my mom is all about staying in one color scheme if possible, so she matched her gloves, scarf and purse with more browns. The only reason her boots are black is because they match the outfit underneath.
Even though we don’t get much rain here in Colorado, I have found rain boots to be very practical. There are many days that it’s sloppy when the snow is melting. And these act as lightweight snow boots. Yet they are usually large enough to layer a couple pairs of socks in case it is cold.
It’s hard to see the pin on the side of mom’s coat, but there is a reason it’s there. She was saying that she’s learned she should never tie or loop this scarf. It becomes impossible to untangle like it has a life of it’s own. Therefore, a pin is the best way to keep it in place. And of course, this pin is great for winter because it looks like a snowman and matches the outfit.
Tips & Tricks
Even though it’s going to be cold for many more months, so many stores offer great sales on these coats now. This could be the best time to pick up some new stylish wool coats because of these fabulous deals.
At least for me, coats seem to last so much longer than the rest of my wardrobe. Even my white wool coat I had for over 10 years before I had to throw it out. I think it helps that we don’t need to wash them as much. Yet since we have to wear them daily, it’s nice to be able to change up the look with accessories.
The hats and scarves are such fun ways to add in modern styles to the winter time. Especially if your coat is more subdued. These additions also can bring two colors together. Of course, hats and scarves keep you warm too. Let’s not forget that.
I’m so glad to report that you should be able to Pin these images to your own Pinterest now. So I’d love it if you help me out and pin away!
