Leather Skirt for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Paired With Denim

Quote of the day: “Devote today to something so daring even you can’t believe you’re doing it.”   Oprah Winfrey

I’m sure every woman on the face of this earth has a black skirt in their closet! But how about a leather or faux leather skirt? It may not be at the top of your list of “I need to get me one of those”, but I have to admit that it’s a fun and modern item!

Of course, I’m sure Nancy or myself wouldn’t have this piece except that my mother generously made us each one last year. We already did one series on these same items here (with lace), here (with floral) & here (with silk). Last year I was trying to add in feminine items to counteract the toughness of the leather. So this year I wanted to see how they would look with other elements.

We start this series by pairing the leather skirt with something denim. My inspiration for this post was seeing Suzanne’s blog post last year! Of course I didn’t add in all of the brooches like she did. We’ll do that next week!

To give you readers some variety of what kind of denim to wear with the skirt, I made sure we all wore something different. I put on my chambray duster, Nancy wore her denim jacket and mom donned her chambray shirt!

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: Like I said above, I paired my chambray duster with my leather skirt. It’s actually a shirt dress, but I’ve never yet worn it as a dress! It certainly doesn’t “flatter” my shape, but sometimes I think we get too worried about that issue!

The mug I’m holding in the above photo is the collage from Spygirl—a wonderful artist who sketched all 40+ bloggers! Here’s a link to the post where she introduced the 3 of us!

If you’d like to see a close up of the mug, Rob’s posted a photo on Instagram that you can view here! I also bought all 3 of us gals shirts with these fabulous sketches on them, which you’ll see in a future post!

I wore my navy tights instead of black ones. Looking back, I might have liked the black ones better to tone down all of the blue in the outfit. The print booties have been definitely one of my favorite pairs due to the lovely colors & design on them.

The rose & purple pearl necklace was a birthday present from my sweetie. He bought it at my friend’s jewelry shop, Mauzies, when I was at my knitting retreat this November! It’s super long, so I wrapped it twice around my neck as a choker, and then tied a knot in it so it would be shorter.

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy’s denim item came in the jacket version. She actually has 2 denim jackets, in her closet! You may think that’s silly, but this one is cut bigger, so it ends up being very useful for the colder weather, when she’s layered many tops under it!

These are the kind of earrings that Nancy has a lot of in her jewelry box. Short & sweet, just like her! This pair has a pretty scrolling design on it and I thought they’d be good since they don’t interfere with the scarf!

The leopard print scarf gets a lot of use being that it’s a neutral! I think a print scarf is an easy way to add interest to solid colored tops! Nancy just recently wore this same scarf in our Animal Print as an Accessory post but tied differently!

The tall black boots are another staple in most of our closets, I’m sure, so I thought they’d be perfect with this outfit!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: My mom was instructed to style her denim shirt with her leather skirt. When I came over to take the photos, I found that she opted to wear her white, cable sweater over it! I thought it looked great, since it adds a nice color contrast to the blue & black and you still get to see her denim collar and cuffs!

The white boots are a funny story! My mom found them one day in her extra closet, and doesn’t even remember buying them. She was questioning me when I came over, if I had bought them for her!! I’d laugh except that’s happened to me once too! I think it’s easy to forget what we buy if you’re like mom & I and get some great deals at the end of the season. Then you have to put it away until the next season comes around, and by then it’s out of sight, out of mind!

Mom grabbed her blue accessories to go with this outfit since she was wearing denim! I like that even though the rings, necklace & earrings all have blue in them, they don’t all match exactly!

I’m not sure if you can tell from this angle, but even her glasses have blue & teal on them! I know, from far away, the frames just look dark, but up close, they match mom’s eyes!
