Western Wear for the 50’s, 60’s, & 70’s: Accessories

This series idea was the brainstorm of Janet, one of my lovely readers of the blog. I really couldn’t figure out a third category for this subject that we might have in our closets. Even though we live in Denver, Colorado, the three of us don’t have a lot of western clothing in our closets! But Janet came up with the thought of many different components, so I grouped it into this section and called it accessories!

As usual, I researched and figured out what we had in our closets so we could show you a variety of doodads that might be considered “Western.” My mom wore a western type of belt, Nancy wore a bandanna as a neck scarf, and I donned a hat (although it’s not exactly a cowboy hat—but it’s close, right?)

If you missed the first two posts about this same subject, my goal was to wear a western piece with other contemporary items. Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: I have to fess up and give credit to Nancy for the hat. I used to have a room full of hats in our other house, but when we downsized, I let most of them go! But to tell you the truth, I’m not even sure if I had a cowboy hat—-since I’m not a cowgirl, I guess I never saw the need!!

The fringe vest was a impulse buy when Charming Charlies had one of their $10 sales! There was a lot of material in the front portions, so I just cut off about 3 inches on each side. It’s still not super flattering, but it’s fun!

I picked an orange sweater to add some color to the outfit. I tend to reach for a long necklace with cardigan & vest that don’t close–to me it keep the eyes looking vertical!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: The bandanna is probably something many of us have in our closets? I’d consider this a western wear item since you always see them on cowboys!

I think this bandanna or scarf close to the neck is multi advantageous. For one thing, it can add a complimentary color closer to your face if your shirt isn’t the best color for you. And secondly, it can camouflage any neck characteristics that you’re not loving!

Since I had Nancy wear browns for her top & bottom, I used the bandanna in this outfit to bring in some color along with the shoes & jewelry!!

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: This may not be the large western belt that you would imagine. But I think the silver detailing on the buckle gives it that western wear air.

Since it’s a light colored belt, I had mom throw on a dark dress. Since it’s a sheath dress, we added a jacket too! I kept the shoes neutral & added a little more blue with her earrings.

Mom made this wool bolero from some Pendleton Wool many years ago. She acquired the material on our summer trip to Seattle probably about 40 years ago. Some people buy souvenirs when they go travelling; my mom buys material!!
