What to Wear to a Drive In Movie for Comfort and Style

What to wear to a drive-in movie may seem like a strange idea. However, since this was the event we were attending, I thought the ideas behind the outfit could work for many other events as well. Besides, drive-in movies could be the wave of the future.

Quote of the day: “The amount of good luck coming your way depends on your willingness to act.” Barbara Sher

The reason I picked this quote for today is because of my thrifted skirt. I know many of my friends think I’m lucky when it comes to finding items secondhand. And while it could be attributed to luck, much of it is being open and persistent.
If you’ve never tried secondhand stores, I’ve written about tips and tricks at both the brick and mortar stores and even online second hand sites.

As for the theme at hand of what to wear to a drive in movie, I wanted to think about comfort and style. For our situation, it was over 100 degrees on this day, so even though the movie is at dusk, it’s still darn hot.
Lesley was inspired by Grease for her outfit and my mom was inspired by the movie itself.

Skirt: Splendid-thrifted ~~ Top: Banana Republic ~~ Shoes: Walking Cradles~~ Scarf: gifted by Judy ~~ Earrings: Pam Neri c/o~~ Purse: Aldo

Because of the heat, I grabbed a lightweight skirt. I wanted a skirt that I could sit in easily and be comfortable. When I recently found this skirt at Goodwill, I didn’t even realize it had the underskirt as part of it. Truthfully it was a happy surprise.

Insider tip: If you have a favorite item, it’s good to find the same kind of thing in different varieties. For example, I have a shorter red skirt, red jeans and a red pair of shorts. This is especially smart for traveling, so your tops will go with everything.

Accessories

I will tell you that I think the sunglasses are a bit much, but then again, sometimes so am I! Besides I didn’t really need them for the event, I just happened to have them in my purse, so I pulled them out.
However, a fun pair of sunglasses should be on everyone’s radar. I can’t tell you how many compliments I get on my heart-shaped sunnies.

As for the head scarf, I was having a bad hair day, which you can tell by the back of my hair. I showed two ways to style head scarves on Instagram recently, especially after Lesley has been wearing them.

Insider tip: Bobby pins are the secret to getting a scarf to stay put. I always put one on each side by my ear, and usually two in the back at the base of my head.

Usually, when I wear my headscarf, I leave the end to trail down my back. I only pulled one end forward for these photos.

Insider tip: Just as many people see you from the back as the front, so give them something fun to look at when they are behind you.

These earrings are my first pair of earrings from Pam Neri. She is a designer that I met on Instagram and she makes only one of everything. Her earrings are reasonably priced and would be a wonderful way to support a small business.

Graphic Tees for Every Age

I’m sure we all have t-shirts in our closets. They are truly a staple I see on every woman of every age. Truthfully, I wasn’t sure I would ever wear a graphic tee, but I have learned that it’s WAY more fun to enjoy our clothing. So finding graphic tees that really speak to us can add a little whimsey to our outfits.

I wore this graphic tee for the comfort factor of what to wear to a drive-in movie. It’s cotton and fits well, so I could be twisting and turning in the car, and still feel good.

Insider tip: Graphic tees are especially good if you don’t enjoy wearing necklaces. They are more interesting than just a plain t-shirt.

Metro + Sandals

These are the Walking Cradles sandals that I just purchased. Why? Because these Metro + shoes have an anatomically engineered arch and heel cup along with extremely lightweight EVA•lution® bottoms! I figured these would be fabulous for all of the explorings we will hopefully be doing soon around our area.
The best part about these “Heather” Metro + sandals is that each strap is adjustable. I have noticed that my feet do swell a little in extreme heat. So this makes them easy to change.

These sandals come in solid colors too, but I saw this metallic leopard on Lisa during one of her Walking Cradles trivia events on Facebook. It’s a great example of how seeing a photo on a site can be different than seeing the same item on someone. I like how they almost look more goldish than leopardish in person.

Insider tip: You do get 15% off your first Walking Cradles purchase when you use the code JODIE15.

My History with Drive In Movies

I do remember as a kid, climbing into the station wagon and going to drive-in movies with my mom and stepdad. Of course, by the time I was in college, it wasn’t about seeing the movie, LOL!
For our outing this day, things have truly evolved. The sound was far superior since it came in on a radio station. The only drawback to that is you have to have your car on the entire time. Then again, when it’s over 100 degrees, you’d have it on for the air conditioner anyways.

It may be the wave of the future if we worry about social distancing for a while. I know there have been pop-up drive-in movies around the Phoenix area in more than one location. How about where you live?

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley, and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
