Part of our Christmas experience this year was to see a rendition of the Nutcracker in Prescott, Arizona. It was the perfect time to talk about what to wear to the ballet for all 4 of us using the items we packed for the trip.
Considering it was the holiday time, you will see a lot of red, but red is a great color for any day.
Quote of the day: “Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want.” Jim Rohn
Even though society has gotten increasingly more casual, going to a special event is the ideal time to grab some of your fancy clothing. Of course, when thinking about what to wear to the ballet, you can always wear whatever you want.
But there’s no reason not to get a little fancier than your everyday look since it’s something out of the ordinary.
Getting dolled up for events is something we talk about often on my site, so make sure to get more inspiration in these articles.
Men’s Version of What to Wear to the Ballet
Even Rob loves to dress up on our outings. He has this red suit coat that is a wonderful addition to any trousers for the holidays.
Because this is winter time, my husband wore layers to keep warm. The teal shirt worn as his base layer is his long underwear. He wore both the pants and tops long underwear.
Insider tip: This long underwear is fleece-lined and amazingly soft. What Rob really likes is they are moisture-wicking too.

Charlotte: Red Dress with Red Ankle Boots
Since our prompt of what to wear to the ballet fell during the Christmas holidays, my mom was excited to wear the red dress that she made with her red ankle boots.
The weather was cold in Prescott, Arizona, so she included a pair of burgundy tights to wear with the look and layered the dress over a holiday turtleneck.
Nancy: Fringe Skirt and White Ankle Boots
Something fun and modern is the perfect answer to the query of what to wear to the ballet. Nancy has had all of these items in her closet for years, but they came together in a fresh way.
Since this event was around Christmas, the red turtleneck fit the bill. But because the outfit is otherwise neutral, you could insert any color top and have the outfit look different.
Other times these items were worn:
Jacket: Minimalist outfits
Skirt: Styling a Charlie’s Angel’s look
Boots: Wearing a white top with white boots
Jodie: Maxi Skirt and Sweater for What to Wear to the Ballet
Even if your event isn’t considered fancy schmancy, you can still pull out a dressier item and then wear something more casual with it.
That’s what I did with this maxi skirt and hoodie sweater.
I thought the fur dickey added a wonderful holiday vibe and I was layered enough to keep warm.
Confession: I never realized how long the hoodie hung down in the back, and I don’t love how it looks. I’ll be adding it to my alterations pile and we will see how I can change it.
Other times these items were worn:
Skirt: Worn with a casual polo top
Boots: Styled with a faux leather top & short skirt
