Why Accessories Can Be Important for Home and Style

Quote of the day: “Turkeys are peacocks that have let themselves go.” Kristen Schaal

So in respect to the quote above, would you rather be a peacock or turkey?? What a question, right? Yet it’s not much different than how accessories can change the look of a room or outfit.

In our second post in collaboration with Little Black “domicile”! , we are discussing accessories. We started this series by seeing how a room could influence our choices in an outfit.

Why accessories add interest to a room

And today we wanted to show how this photo with the colorful pillows, could be an inspiration for our outfits. Since the weather here is still winterish, we selected our outerwear for this photo shoot. Many of you may not need these kind of coats or winter wear anymore, but you can always pin these images for next winter.

Like I talked about with our room design inspiration post, an inspiration is more about the idea than an exact copy. I had showed this photo to my moms, but I suggested to them to go with the idea of accessorizing instead of copying the photo.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I have to admit that I am an accessory maximalist.

It’s actually hard for me to not add in a ton of accessories to any outfit. In fact, I’m sure many of you think I go overboard at times. Sure there are many different perspectives, like Coco Chanel who always said to take off a piece before leaving the house. However, I think I’m more like Iris Apfel when it comes to the question of why accessories?

I chose my solid colored coat and tan jeans as my foundation for this outfit. I’ve worn this coat as the one that I layered over when we visited Glenwood Springs. The funny story about it, is Rob had actually ordered it for himself a couple of years ago from a China online site. It was one of those inexpensive sites, and we soon learned how their sizing is quite different. Needless to say it didn’t fit Rob, so it got handed down to me.

Why accessories should be used

It’s not always easy to show all of my fun and colorful accessories while trying to stay warm. That’s why I’m showing you my turquoise earrings under my earmuffs, which tie in with the turquoise scarf around my neck, the blue pin on my lapel and my turquoise purse.

I always think earmuffs are the perfect way to keep your ears warm without messing up your hair as much. Did you know there are earmuffs that have concealed headphones in them now?

Why accessories under the winter wear is important

Since I haven’t been in the habit of wearing my brooches this winter, I decided to layer a couple on my jacket lapel. The three of us have worn brooches many times on the blog, and I think they work so perfectly on solid colored coats like this.

One of these pins is actually a Klippy Doo clip from Trendz Boutique. In a way, the Klippy Doo clip is almost like a men’s tie clip. I think it’s so versatile because you can use it on scarves and many other pieces without putting a hole in the item.

Why accessories make you look great

The rest of my accessories are my 3 in 1 infinity scarf and my mittens. This exact scarf is not hand knitted by me, but I did use it as inspiration for the one I did create as a holiday gift for my book club. I realize that with the weather heating up, you have put away most of these pieces. However, if you need a couple for next year, this is the time to snag them at fabulous deals.

For under $10, you could add a colorful infinity scarf, a print scarf, or a fuzzy, red one to your collection.

Now the mittens, I did knit up many years ago. I love the fact that they have every color in them, and so go with everything. Mittens are another great find right now. If you love the fuzzy trim, then you’ll love these. Or if you love intarsia better, then these are an amazing deal.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy answered the challenge of why accessories with her solid green coat as the base.

Even though she just bought this coat this fall, she’s worn it already on the blog a couple of times.

And the funny thing is her boots, mittens and scarf are almost the same color as mine. Yet I think her outfit looks so different because of the different foundation. Her base coat and jeans are a darker color, while mine was lighter in color. Yet the accessories stand out wonderfully, no matter what.

Why accessories make winter outfits shine

Let’s talk about the pin on Nancy’s headband. She used this fun pin to cover up a label on the band. I thought that was a brilliant solution to those pesky tags and labels.

The headbands are another option that don’t tend to mess up your hair as much, yet keep your ears warm. I have knitted some like this in the past for my employees, but do I have one myself? Of course not. Just like the mittens, though, it could be the perfect time to stock up with this one or this one that has cute sheep on it.

Why accessories cover up labels

As part of Nancy’s accessories, she grabbed a scarf for the front of her coat.

What I love is that this isn’t your usual coat scarf. It’s a silky scarf that we usually think of for your outfit, not your coat. But why not wear any of your scarves with your outerwear? This one certainly brings a little more dressiness to the look.

And then Nancy even added a brooch to this scarf. I know with these silkier scarves, they can have trouble staying tied, so using a pin is smart. Heck, if you were going to be outside for the entire time, you could even use the pin to hold the scarf right to the coat itself.

Why accessories for women over 60

Another part of thinking about why accessories can make the outfit better, is the cohesiveness  between colors and textures. For instance, Nancy’s gloves really tie in with the color of her boots. And her purse is both the same hue as the coat only a lighter value. This lighter green is also found in the scarf, so even though there are many colors, they all work nicely together. Just like in our home decor,  there are usually more than one or two colors used.

Speaking of boots, this is another item that can be such a deal right now. If you never thought you needed burgundy boots, then you’d be surprised at how they look great all winter long. If you like the slouchy boots, then this pair is on sale. However, if you’re more of a ankle boot lover, then this pair is wonderful.

Why accessories add punch to looks

Charlotte’s (80+) Outfit: My mom kept her entire outfit black, and then added in her red accessories.

I love this idea of using the accessories not only to add in fun to an outfit, but also to put a more complimentary color near your face. Many women love the idea of wearing black, but not all of us look great in it. Especially as we get older and lose some of the coloring in our face and hair.

Therefore, a great color scarf and hat add in a better color for my mom here and make for the perfect reason for grabbing some extras before you head out the door.

Why accessories add interest to fashion

First let’s talk about this hat. My mom actually made this hat many, many years ago. And don’t you know that the baker’s cap is totally in style right now? Just think of these babies as the perfect way to cover up a bad hair day, along with looking stylish. And the best part? They really aren’t expensive. For example for under $25 you can have a solid colored one or a tweed one. Either that, or maybe you can “borrow” one from one of the men in your family.

Also notice the owl pin on my mom’s coat. She has quite the amazing collection of owls in every way, shape and form.

Why accessories are important for women 80+

The rain boots are a very recent purchase from Charming Charlies.

We are gearing up for our Alaskan cruise, and this is the kind of item we don’t already have in our possession. One, because it doesn’t rain much here. And two because when it does, we don’t hang outside in it! LOL. So after I found my pair at the thrift store, I told mom, she should probably get a pair. And they have the funnest versions of them nowadays. I have to admit, that I have found mine to be very functional even in the snow. Especially if you layer a couple pairs of socks in them.

The embroidery trend is going strong for the spring, and is on absolutely everything. The warmer weather version would be to have it on your sneakers or ballet flats.

Why accessories are fun for style & homes

My mom’s example of why accessories are important, concentrates that one color is dominant. She chose all of her accessories to be red and to pretty much match each other. I know many women are much more comfortable with matching colors in their outfits. If you are one of those people, I’d be interested to know if you do the same thing for your room decor?

Behind the Scenes

You know it’s family love when you help each other get the lipstick off your teeth….

Why accessories make outfits great

Why accessories make our style nice

I included a photo of the place that we took our photos for this post. It’s the Manor House in Ken Caryl, and was the place that Nancy married my father. I thought it was the perfect backdrop for our photos, since even the outside of this place is decorated with accessories. Take for example the chandelier on the front porch and the evergreen tress.

Why accessories work even for homes

I thought this was a fun collaboration with a different kind of blog. In a way, home decor and styling our bodies really aren’t that different, are they?
