I have switched to Borboleta lash serum and wanted to share some of the details, the whys, and more about lash serums.
The three of us were recently talking about eyelashes and how we are noticing that the younger generations are wearing fake lashes with either press on, magnetic lashes, or extensions. I’ve tried a couple of these, but I like how the lash serums work even better. It seems more natural to me and easier to use.
Quote of the day: “Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence.” – Lin Yutang
I’m not saying that eyelashes are a new “road” however, I was excited to discover Borboleta Lash Serum after trying all kinds of other products in the past.
This is a sponsored post with Borboleta (or Borby for short) which means I can offer you a 15% discount for only a short time (JODIE15). I give the details below, and as always, I only share what works for me.
First, let me address why I switched to Borboleta lash serum and more information about the company. Then I will share my journey with my eyelashes.

What is an Eyelash Serum & How Do Eyelashes Grow?
Eyelash serum is a liquid applied to your lashes that is meant to nourish your lashes and make them look longer and thicker.
You use it nightly by sweeping the brush across your top eyelashes only. Once you get to the stage where your eyelashes look long enough, you can do a maintenance schedule every other night. This is the stage I’m at right now.
Did you know that eyelashes don’t just continually grow? They actually have a 3 growth phase just like the hair on your head. One phase is that the eyelashes grow, then the growth stops and rests, and then they shed. This is why the serum takes a while to make a difference. And that’s exactly why I waited over 3 months before agreeing to work with Borboleta.
Insider tip: BTW, eyelashes and eyebrows are very similar, so you can use this on your brows too. What I do is swipe it across my eyelid first, and then use the brush on my brow area before dipping it back in the tube.
More About Borboleta
Why Borboleta? They claim to be the lash experts.
How? For the past decade, they have been developing lash products that were only available for beauty professionals at first. In fact, they were more about training and education for eyelash extensions until lockdown hit the world. They have since worked on supporting the eyelash artists with this eyelash line.
For me, I love the idea that Borboleta is made with plant-based stem cells. It’s also fragrance-free and cruelty-free if that is something important to you.
The biggest factor for me was trying to find something more budget-friendly that still worked for my lashes. And that is where the proof is in the photos.
Borboleta doesn’t only have lash serum, but they have a full range of lash products that span from cleansing to eye masks. They generously sent me their products to try and while I tried it all, my favorites are the lash serum and the eye masks.
My Personal Story with my Lashes
It was about 3-4 years ago that I realized how sparse and short my eyelashes had become with menopause. I don’t remember how I found out about Rodan + Fields eyelash serum, but I decided to make the investment even though it was expensive (over $100).
And it worked. It grew my lashes. It was obvious that my lashes were longer. Heck, I remember even talking about it in a monthly round-up blog that I wasn’t sure I could justify the expense over time.
Therefore, I decided to try some of the other serums out there. The hard part is it takes my lashes 2 months to grow in the first place, and just as long to know if a new serum works. I tried 3 different serums. While one helped to make them a tad thicker, none of them made my lashes long.
So I decided to try false lashes. I tried the brand with the magnetic eyeliner and it didn’t work (I returned it for a full refund), and I tried normal magnetic eyelashes from the drugstore. Again they didn’t work.
My theory is my eye shape is too curved for those false lashes. Either that or who knows, because I have great hand/eye coordination from my dental days.
When the lockdown was happening, my friend Cathy who sells Rodan + Fields let me know they were having a special on their lash serum. So I quickly bought some to get my eyelashes back to the length I loved.
Then my friend, Kellyann, talked about Borboleta and the company reached out to me. I researched the company first and then agreed to try out the products.
Only after using it for over 2 months did I reach out and ask if I could promote them. How I used the product is below.
How This All Started
When I posted this photo in my aging hair post, I had quite a few women reach out and ask me about my eyelashes. At the time I took the above photo, I had been using Borboleta for a good 2 months on one eye while still using my Rodan & Field’s lash serum on the other eye.
Can you tell a difference? I can’t and that is proof to me that the Borboleta is working to maintain the lash look that I achieved with the R+D serum.
If you don’t know, I am a biology person at heart. As a retired cosmetic dentist, I like to be able to really see a difference by applying products on only half of my face/body so I can compare. I do this with the majority of products when I’m first testing them out.
You can see these examples of comparing products
- What Do I Know About Aging Hair? –This was when I was comparing hair serums to my thin and receeding hairline.
- Comparing LipSense vs Maybelline for All Day Wear— This was when I wore two different colors of brands of lipsticks all day and was able to compare them side by side.
So for my experiment with Borboleta eyelash serum, I continued to do my maintenance routine with Rodan + Fields serum on my right eye and Borboleta serum on my left eye. All of the photos included in this post are after using the Borby lash serum for over 2 months.
My Results with Borboleta Eyelash Serum
I’ve had magnificent results with the Borboleta eyelash serum. I’m not here to throw the Rodan + Fields product under the bus. But my wallet will be happier now.
Full disclosure. I did not use Borboleta eyelash serum to grow my lashes. I have only used it to maintain them.
If you are worried about the safety of these types of products, I would suggest you turn to WebMD. And if you are concerned about the actual ingredients in the serum, I’m linking to a site that gives you the breakdown in real terms about what each ingredient is and does.
For the Borboleta lash serum
For the Rodan + Fields lash serum.
Insider tip: The Borby serum comes in different quantities if you’re trying to compare apples to apples. BUT even if you purchased 2 Borby serums (which would give you 6 ml of product) it would be cheaper than the Rodan + Fields serum. PLUS with my discount code, you will save even more.
I see that Borboleta is offering a one-month lash serum bottle also. In reality, this wouldn’t be a good test for me because from experience it takes a good 7-8 weeks for me to notice a difference with my own lash growth journey.
