How Your Yellow Shoes Can be a Great Contrast Item

Quote of the day: “Beginnings are only difficult without any action” – Bryon Pulsifer

I always love the idea that your shoes could be a great contrast item. Now I always think of a pop of color being in contrast to neutrals. However, I decided to bring in more variety with other options besides pairing it with only neutrals. My outfit is basic neutrals (black & white), Nancy’s has some muted colors along with her neutrals, and mom went with a monochromatic aqua look. Since our shoes are yellow, we accessorized with yellow!

I do realize that I have an obsession with shoes; however, they can be such a fun addition to an outfit, in my opinion! Scouring through our closets, I realized that the three of us all owned yellow shoes (I suppose I had a little to do with that fact–ha ha). Thus, the makings of another blog series!

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile then you’ll realize that yellow is my recent favorite color. And so many people will say that they can’t wear the color (I’m here to argue that point though—it’s the shade of yellow that makes a difference). But even if you don’t want to wear it next to your face, then how about on your feet?

As for our yellow shoes? To add some fun and variety I made sure all of our styles were a little different. Mom is wearing peep-toe flats (she also has a pair of yellow pumps in her closet), Nancy has sandals, and I wore my heels. I have sandals too, but they are very much like Nancy’s.

Jodie’s (50’s) Outfit: We decided to take pictures last minute on a Sunday—so I have no makeup on except for the lipstick (thus the sunglasses—besides they were yellow!).

I even went on an accessory restraint—see, no necklace or bracelet. But for some reason my husband loved, loved, loved this outfit! I may just have to wear it on our next date night!!

The jeans I just bought online, so when I tried them on, I was a little worried that they were too tight.

Yet, I think they look fine in the pictures? So maybe I’ve been buying my pants too big?

I decided to roll up the hem to show off the shoes. I’ve actually had these shoes for at least 4 years, and they are a tad worn. But a little help from my Magic Eraser made them look almost new again!!

The hair? I had just gotten it trimmed and I usually have her straighten it (you’ll see that in the last post of this series, too). Don’t you just love straight hair?

I really do wish this was my normal, but alas, I am learning to embrace what my body has been given. I can rationalize why I like it so much though. It’s neat & organized just like the way my brain works. Curly hair? Hah—there’s no organization going on there!!

Nancy’s (60’s) Outfit: Nancy’s pants are the ones we featured in the ankle pants series (see these posts starting here).

They are such a great fit on her and have so many colors with which to coordinate. They don’t actually have a real yellow in them, it’s more of a green that has a yellow tint! But that’s why the sandals can be considered a pop of yellow.

Since we had Nancy add a basic tee to the outfit we then added in two necklaces for fun!

The tassel one is about the same length as the other one, so I just shortened it with an orthodontic rubber band. (If you have a kid in braces, make sure to snag a couple of their elastics for this such purpose—I do this all the time)

Charlotte’s (70’s) Outfit: My mom is a huge fan of a monochromatic outfit  (I am letting the divas choose their own outfits at times!!).

When she first received these jeans (we did an entire blog series on colored jeans here), she was all about matching shirts to them. Needless to say, I’ve had her wear them many times with non-matching shirts. However, for her pop of yellow shoes, I thought this was a fun look.

And anytime, I get mom to laugh in her picture shoot is a good time!! Isn’t this such a great photo of her??

Since many women have commented that they don’t always remember to wear necklaces, I thought I’d show mom’s outfit with some accessory restraint also! Especially since her earrings are somewhat longer.

Since it’s still summer—here’s some fun yellow sandals you might want to check out:

  • I have yellow shoes! Honest I do.

    • That’s fabulous Carol!! Do you love them and wear them tons??

  • You know I love me some yellow shoes! Maybe someday I’ll buy a pair.

    • Me too!! I Can’t wait to see yours one of these days!!

  • I actually love wavy hair but the straight looks good on you. What I REALLY love though is yellow shoes. I am going to follow up on the nordstrom slide…

    • Thanks Anna!!
I think you’ll be surprised at how much you will wear yellow shoes!! At least I was!!

  • Kathleen McDermott

I just love everything about these outfits. You look stunning in yours and your pants fit you perfectly. Nancy looks so cute. Charlotte looks chic and effortless. I love her in her monochromatic looks – she always looks like a fashion model. Love the yellow footwear and all the jewelry.

    • Jodie Filogomo

This is one of my favorite photos for some reason Kathleen!! Maybe because yellow is my favorite color and it just seems to make me happy!!

  • After seeing all of your yellow shoes, I just reaffirmed how much I really need a new pair of yellow shoes. I only have a really old pair of felt Mary Jane slipper shoes in yellow. Oh, and I did pick up a pair of neon yellow sandals on clearance, but I need some “real yellow shoes”! And green ones, too! Ha! Loving all your outfits here. So refreshing!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I was just thinking about needing green! It’s amazing how a colorful shoe can make an outfit sing!! I mean, sure, we need our neutrals—but don’t leave out the colors!!

  • Hi Jodie
I love the yellow shoes, your sunglasse, what a perfect color for summer to add that pop! Great sandals and love the Madden ones you shared. The soft blue color is very pretty with the yellow. The only yellow I think looks nice on me is a soft-buttery yellow.
Thank you for linking up with Turning heads tuesday!
    jess xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jess!!
Those fringe yellow sandals are so cute—I almost wanted to buy a couple of the ones I showcased—but do I really need 3 pair of yellow shoes?

  • I think ever since your other post about yellow all I have been picking up is yellow! What have you done to me hahaha Love your post and thank you for letting me know about my link issue on my blog YOU ROCK

    Life is just Rosie

    • Jodie Filogomo

How funny Rosie!! Hopefully you’ll start to love yellow too!!
I’m glad you got the link fixed!!

  • Your look is KILLER, Jodie! You look so retro-fabulous, and the palette of navy, white, and yellow really pops! I love your approach of doing all your accessories in the same color. It keeps the palette focused, bold, and memorable.

    <3 Liz

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Liz!
I do think this is one of my fave outfits lately—and the interesting thing for me is how relatively simple it is. For someone who is not a minimalist by any means—it does make me rethink some ideas!!

  • Versatilestylebytracey

I love a pop of color with a shoe and Yellow is a great one! I love your outfit and typically restrain from a necklace when I wear a belt, not easy for a self proclaimed maximalist, but as seen here it works and allows the belt to take center stage. I adore Nancy’s pants as they are so versatile and can be paired with so many colors. I had to laugh that a few of you have more than one yellow shoe, what are the odds? Pairing it with the Aqua is a fabulous idea for Mom. A great trio of looks.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, since we know I have a shoe addiction and I probably caught the virus from my mother—then maybe the odds are in our favor for the numerous pairs of yellow shoes–ha ha!! Are you saying you don’t have more than one pair? Do you have a pair?
Maximalist—that’s such a perfect term….I’m going to adopt that! Definitely me too!!

  • Amy D. Christensen

Jodie! I love these outfits. All of you look so stylish. First of all I can see why your husband loves this outfit. My hubby does not like an outfit that looks chaotic…think it must have to do with the chaos of busy lives…so your outfit is absolutely perfect. You look so chic and sexy. Nancy is so cute. I love her purple toes and the great necklaces. And I occasionally love a monochromatic look, so high five to Mom. She looks so relaxed and confident. I love what these outfits did for all three of you. Perfect choices. – Amy

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Amy!!
Funny how your husband states that preference—-I’ve never heard it that way! But simplistic can be very flattering at times!! (And you do wonder how, psychologically, it is about what is going on in our lives!!!)
      Happy Thursday!!

  • Savvy Southern Chic

I love yellow! And I need to add a pair of yellow shoes to my closet ( I do have mustard ballet flats). Another yellow pair would be so fun.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Well, those mustard flats count!! Aren’t they quite versatile??
      Thanks for joining in Fonda!!

  • I love your outfit the mostest, Jodie!! So sassy and sexy and spunky. Your husband has a good eye. And can we talk about those heels, baby!!!!!

p/s I do quite adore this straight hair look on you, I cannot lie xoxo

pp/s I used to have two pairs of yellow shoes. One a bootie the other wedge heels but somehow, I no longer have them. I love it when life presents an opportunity, sorry, a need to go shoe shopping, ahem.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I call that opportunity inspiration—ha ha!! The rationale may be a little different but the result is the same—-new shoes!!
Thanks for the compliment—I love my hair this way too. In fact, about 2 years ago I had it chemically straightened. However, since my hair is thin & fine, and it’s so dry here—it was hard on it—and I’m way too lazy to straighten it daily (although you’d think it wouldn’t be that hard!)

  • Mother Daughter

Great looks Jodie. I haven’t owned yellow shoes for years. lol I am so matchy matchy it is funny, I had a brown dress trimmed in yellow so that was all I ever wore the shoes with. Jodie you look so glamorous in your pic’s.

    • Jodie Filogomo

But it’s never to late to try a pair of yellow shoes with other items—they’d look great with your red Lularoe skirt!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I just saw this post by another blogger: The yellow shoes are a great option!!

  • First off, I can’t believe all 3 of you own yellow shoes! I didn’t think that was a popular color for shoes (even though, I do own a pair myself!) Secondly, yellow is my favorite color so of course, I love it!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      I know, right?
But my mom has pretty much every color imaginable—so that was easy.
I love yellow, so of course I had a pair (or two)
and I think I talked Nancy into her pair last year!!

  • I Love yellow shoes, of course! I enjoyed the fact you showcased three different styles in this post. Black and white and yellow are a wonderful combination, especially in the summer. Your hair looks very pretty straightened! It’s a nice change, right? Although I am trying to embrace my more curls more of late.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I do love my hair straight like this—but realistically, I am way too lazy to do it like this daily (besides, it never comes out as good as when my stylist cuts & styles it).
I am embracing my curls–and there are days I like them too—and best of all—I can have it both ways!!
      Thanks for joining in!!

  • Jodie, I can’t say that I have ever owned a pair of yellow shoes. I guess I’m kinda a plain jane in the shoe department. I usually choose neutrals because if I wear anything other I feel like my feet are staring at me lol … Thank you so much for sharing with us at #SimplifyWednesdays. Have a beautiful week! • Jodie Filogomo

It’s true that you probably view your shoes more–especially due to the angle of your eyes vs. feet! But to me, that’s all the more reason to have beauty sitting on them!!
I do still have quite a few pair of neutral shoes though—but I’m hoping never to dip into the “old lady shoes”—ha ha!!

  • great post dear!!!Now i follow you on instagram tweeter i hope you follow me too!!kiss

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Carolina!

  • I will say, yellow is probably one of the most difficult colors to use but, as you, i love it too. In fact, I have a pair of flats pretty much like your Moms and I think, i still have the yellow top that goes with them (maybe). I love that Nancy use violet nail polish which is the complementary color of yellow-Bravo!

    • Jodie Filogomo

Why do you think yellow is difficult to use?
I hear that a lot, and many people think it doesn’t look good on them—but I guess I love it so much I look past all of that!
Or maybe I like it so much because not everyone else does? Such philosophicalness on just a color—ha ha!

  • Marina

This is such a lovely post and you all look stunning. I love the pop of yellow it is such a beautiful and happy colour and it is so in style now xx

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Marina!! I am drawn to yellow—at least right now in my life. So maybe that means I am truly happy?
      Thanks for joining in !!

  • ADA

You all look fabulous in your pants and yellow shoes. Love those pumps Jodi and all the pops of yellow through your outfit. Great glasses and earrings. I love love black and white paired with yellow.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Ada—this outfit really did turn out fun!!

  • Yellow is such a happy color and I need more of it in my closet! I love all of your cheery looks! Great roundup of yellow shoes too!

    Doused In Pink

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Jill!!

  • Wow Jodie! Those glasses look stunning on you!! Very very nice! I never liked yellow that much, but afther seeing very much yellow accesories this Summer I have to see that you can combine it with everything. Your outfit is also looking good! All three of you look bright and happy and summery!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Nancy!!
I hear many people say they don’t love the color yellow—it almost makes me feel sorry for it—but it’s never too late to change your mind!! 🙂

  • I adore your outfit Jodie’s . It’s my favorite between all of them. I love how you added the yellow belt and glasses to match the shoes!

    Tamara –

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Tamara!!
I love it when an outfit looks at good in the photos as in my head! 🙂

  • You 3 divas absolutely rocking summer look with the sunny yellow color. I don´t have a yellow shoes. I have to buy some! I’m happy to discover your blog.
Thank you for linking up with My Red Carpet.

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think you’d be surprised at how versatile yellow shoes can be Anna!! They are such a great color and brighten up any outfit!!
      Thanks for stopping by!

  • Catherine Urbanski

I LOVE yellow! Actually I don’t think I ever had a choice. When I was a child my mother constantly dressed me in that color because she said it looked beautiful against my black hair. But more than that, yellow is a happy color!!! And your post made me think–I have yellow skirts, yellow sweaters, yellow shirts but I don’t have any yellow shoes!!!! I need to get some!! Thank you for a great, great post you and the ladies look absolutely fantastic!!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

And your mother is right Catherine—it does look fabulous with your hair!!
Of course, as a shoe girl, i do think it’s important to fill that void in your closet—ha ha!! Can’t wait to see the pair you end up getting!!

  • I also own yellow shoes and have managed to wear them much more often than I ever thought I would. In fact, I just bought another pair from Mod Cloth recently. I find they pretty much go with everything. Maybe it is because they kind of blend into my skin tone.

Aren’t you looking all sleek and chic Jodi? I LOVE the peplum top you’re wearing! Also I’d say those jeans fit you perfectly. When you’re a hottie, why not show it off?

BTW…I’ll switch out my bone straight hair for your curls any day. Don’t we always want what we don’t have? ; )

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think the bright colored shoes are fun (although yours sound more muted if they match your skin)!! But it’s the best feeling when you buy something and find you like it even more than you imagined!!
As for the curly vs straight hair—alas it is so very true we want what we don’t have. Always!! And I’ve grown to be okay with my curly hair most days. But let’s just examine the advantages of straight hair —it’s very orderly and well placed—-just sayin’!!

  • Laura

I don’t have yellow shoes but I think I need them now! These three looks are fabulous! I just love how they look against the printed pants and the white and black too!!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I do think that the yellow adds a nice zip to many outfits!!!
Of course, orange or bright pink works well too!!

  • Lorena Lorena

I think all of you did a great job with the color accents – and you look marvelous J.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

Love the yellow pops of color! August just screams yellow, doesn’t it?

    • Jodie Filogomo

It really does, Terri!! Especially with all the flowers blooming and sun shining!!
      Thanks for joining in!!

  • what a great post! I love how you all incorporated yellow into your looks.

All the girls look wonderful..simple and very elegant, but Jodie, you look amazing…beautiful…..I love your blog
I love kitchen is yellow but I rarely wear the color..don’t know why!

    • Jodie Filogomo

My mom’s kitchen is yellow too!!
And I think that makes so much sense, because it’s a happy color and food makes us happy!!
Now we just need to get it on your feet, right?
thanks so much for joining it—I love it!

  • I love the pops of yellow in each of the looks! Yellow is one of my favorite colors to wear – I always hear people say they can’t wear it, too, and accessories are a great option.

    Daily Style Finds

    • Jodie Filogomo

It’s nice to hear others like yellow too, Lisa!!
It’s bright, and happy—what’s not to like??

  • PetiteOver40

Ooooh! Sunshine on your feet! I love it! So summery and delightful!

Your outfit is just hot, Jodie! It shows off your curves and the accessories give everything a little zing! You look like a movie star!

Who knew so many varieties of shoes came in yellow? I don’t necessarily avoid yellow but I’m not always drawn to it. Seeing your use of yellow here, though, gives me ideas!

    – Sherry

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Sherry!!
For some reason I really love bright colored shoes (and I should be embarrassed to admit I found another yellow pair in my closet—although they are closer to gold–ha ha)

  • Your mom makes me smile. I just know she would be so much fun to hang around. And I love yellow so this post was right up my alley.
    🙂 gwingal

    • Jodie Filogomo

I love the pictures when you see people laughing—it makes me feel good!!
      Thanks Gwin!!

  • I have an obsession with shoes too! I don’t have much yellow in my closet though. These are all such fun outfits.

Shoes are the cherry on my sundaes…..
But I’m thinking you might need to add some yellow—it’s my fave!!

  • Yellow is perfect for summer, love it!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Tara!!

  • All three of you own fabulous yellow shoes & all outfits came together very nicely! Accessories and shoes are a great way to add yellow to your wardrobe when you don’t want to wear it near your face (even though I agree with you, it all depends on the right shade of yellow!).

I can’t wear heels, but your yellow heels are beyond fabulous! Love the glasses & earrings, too. Such a great look!

    Andrea’s Wellness Notes

    • Jodie Filogomo

I think bright colored shoes are one of those must haves, Andrea!!
In fact, I found another pair in my closet (oopsie) that I haven’t worn in a long time—they are more of a kitten heel and more goldish!!
Thanks for the love and support—I appreciate it!

    Happy Tuesday!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Rebecca!!

  • I am liking this series already, Jodie!
Aqua and yellow is a beautiful combination and your mum looks very cool and comfortable in this outfit.
Nancy looks great too (I love her trousers).
And, no wonder your husband liked this look!
    Young, fresh, cool and sexy.
The cuffed hem always works (tiny touches can make all the difference) to modernise an outfit and elongate the leg.
Speaking of which…hello sexy shoes!! A heel that high is always going to get a big thumbs up from most men (what is is about the foot being arched that our husbands love so much?? :oD)
This is a definite “date night” look, and different from the normal darker evening tones.
    Great styling!

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Samantha!
I never thought the cuffing of jeans would appeal to me (as a petite) but for some reason I really liked it with these jeans!
This is why I want to wear heels to my grave—they do make me feel sexy!!

  • Jodie you look absolutely gorgeous in this outfit! I love a pop of yellow too. Have a great day! Gemma x

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks Gemma!!
I will definitely have to recreate it for date night!

  • Betsy Todd

Very fashion yellow shoes, and i love this color

    • Jodie Filogomo

      Thanks so much Betsy!

  • Judy Gramith

I have to agree with Darlene on this one you really DO look smokin hot Jodie. The accessories are very flattering. Also it’s hard to tell if your hair blew into the back swept style or if you styled it that way but I LOVE IT!!
Nancy and Charlotte both look terrific as well. Nancy’s purple toenails are darling with the cute yellow sandals. Charlotte’s yellow accessories compliment the pale blue quite nicely. I like the monochromatic look but her smile is her best asset here!

    • Jodie Filogomo

I actually pulled my hair to one side on purpose with a barrette. I saw Blake Lively do it in that movie Age of Adeline (we just watched it recently)—so I stole the look from her. Besides my hair is quite thin, so I like it this way!!
Isn’t mom so cute when she laughs—I can’t even remember what we were talking about—usually she catches me up on all her activities from the week while we’re taking pictures!!

  • Girl…you have started this series with a #BANG
Of course your husband loves this outfit on you. You look #smokinhot
Your mom did a great job dressing herself… 😉

    • Jodie Filogomo

You always crack me up with your hashtags girl!!
Thanks for such a nice compliment!!
Mom’s outfits is still not what I would style, but I have to learn to give up a little control, right?

  • I love seeing yellow as an accent and you’ve shown how versatile it can be. You all look fabulous but Jodie, you look absolutely stunning.

    • Jodie Filogomo

Thanks Rena—I really love adding shoes as a different color—I sure hope it stays fashionable for a long time!!
