Summer 2018 Trends
Happy beginning of summer. I realize that the calendar doesn’t say summer for another couple of weeks, but at least in my neck of the woods, the temperatures have soared lately. I’m always happy when I don’t have to be cold all the time!
I was just talking to a woman at church this last weekend about the clothing her mother used to have, and almost everything she was talking about, seemed like it was now back in fashion. We all realize that styles come around over and over, so I thought I’d touch on some of the big summer 2018 trends that I’ve noticed.
And being a thrifty person, I’d like to point out that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy these styles. Many of these items you may already have in your closet. And if not, you can certainly look for them at any thrift store whether it be online or brick and mortar. On top of that, most of the items I showcase in this post are under $75.
Summer Sandals
To me summertime means wearing sandals as much as I can. It’s certainly one way to stay cooler in the hot weather, and there are many options that would work whether you wear heels or not. Shoes are something, I know many women will pay a little more for to get comfortable ones, so this pair showcased is just a little more than $50.
Yet red sandals seem to work with almost any outfit in the summer. Heck, we showcased our red sandals on the blog 3 years ago so it’s certainly something that will be around for awhile.
Even if you don’t appreciate a bright color shoe for the summer, the espadrilles always seem to make an appearance in the warmer months. There are platform ones that give you the height without having an incline for your foot. Or if you don’t want to show your toes, there’s another version. Of course there are just as many flat espadrilles that are comfy and fun too.
I’d love to hear your favorite kinds of summer sandals that you wear year after year.
Tassels
Fringe is another one of those summer trends that had been popular for a few years now. All three of us styled different items two years ago with accessories, necklaces and clothing items.
If you happen to be crafty, you can always find tassels at a craft shop and make your own tassel accessories, or sew them on a piece you already own. Because adding in a new pair of earrings or a necklace can make any t-shirt or older top look incredibly modern.
For example, for under $15, Target has some wonderful tassel earrings. Target is not the only one that has a wonderful selection of these kind of earrings. You can find them with just tassels or with metal decoration also.
I feel like there are tassels on every imaginable piece of clothing or accessories right now. They are on shoes, necklaces, purses, and tops. If you have an older piece in your closet that has tassels, but doesn’t fit, how about cutting them off and attaching them to something else?
Kimonos
The tassels are also on a ton of kimonos. It’s that 70’s vibe returning, but even if you’re not head over heels with the tassels, you can appreciate the kimonos. Again, this is something that has been gaining popularity for the last couple of years. When I first saw them, I thought they’d be the perfect topper for the summer. And even this summer they still are going strong.
Most of the kimonos you tend to see are the print ones. However, there certainly are solid ones too. Heck, you can easily make your own kimono with a large scarf that you already have in your wardrobe without any sewing or any cutting.
I truly think any kimono is a great topper especially if you don’t feel comfortable wearing sleeveless tops or dresses anymore. Yet why get rid of the sleeveless items in your closet if you have a fun kimono.
PS. There are also kimono tops that you can wear without something under them. They have that flowy feel as the topper version, and still look perfect.
Gingham
Gingham is one of those prints that makes a big impact every spring and summer. So why not join in on the fun? My mom has a gingham jacket that the three of us wore years ago, and now I have a couple pieces of my own.
Could you have something in your closet from years ago? Even if the piece doesn’t fit like it used to, you might be able to reconfigure it. Or get something new this season. You can find the gingham print in almost every kind of clothing lately.
Personally I’ve been obsessing over gingham shoes for some reason. There are some with small heels, flats or even sneakers. I haven’t succumbed to this obsession yet, but I may break down at some time.
Yet the gingham print always looks fabulous in tops, pants, skirts and even jackets. Which is your preference?
Straw Purses
Straw purses certainly scream that it’s summer time to me. I recently picked up one from a local thrift store, but since they’ve been around for years, you might already have one?
There are the tote versions that are big enough for your beach and pool needs. Yet there are the smaller ones too, that you can carry everywhere. And they can be decorated is so many ways. I’ve seen palm tree decor, flamingos, as well as stars, cacti and even stripes. Heck, you could incorporate 2 of my favorite summer 2018 trends into one with a gingham straw purse.
And you don’t have to only have a tan straw purse. There are ones that come in multitude of colors like black, purple, and multicolored.
Tell me your favorite summer 2018 trend in the comments below. And I’d love to know if you happen to have any of these items in your closet from years ago. If you’re looking for adding any of these trends to your wardrobe, it could be the perfect time to visit some of the “trendy” stores and get them for a deal.
