Why we Wear Clothes and how to find the right ones to tell your story

Why We Wear Clothes

Quote of the day:” I wouldn’t want to be 20 now. I know so much more, and I’m much more comfortable in my skin, saggy as it is.” Susan Sarandon

This might seem like a silly question to pose. You could say that we wear clothes because we have to cover our bodies.

But the more I talk to some women, it’s not an easy task set upon us every day. What makes an outfit look good, and how can we make this act less stressful? In fact, at my recent blogging conference, a woman admitted to me that she didn’t know how to dress her body anymore. With the changes of menopause, she felt like her body was so different and she didn’t know where to start.

As much as I’d love to give you all of the answers, you may be surprised to know I don’t know everything. (Don’t tell my husband that fact, he thinks I do…LOL). But let me give you a couple of secrets I’ve learned through this blogging journey.

First and foremost, I think it’s time we start loving our bodies

Sure, they’ve changed over the years. It’s not what we’ve been told “perfect” looks like. Yet were they ever perfect? Am I the only one that stressed about silly body things even when I was younger? Yet I look back at those older photos and think I looked fine.

Let’s be serious. We can never live up to looking like the models in the magazine or catalogs. Especially if they are using Photoshop to change any imperfections. So let’s just embrace the bodies we have and think positive thoughts about them. Each and every day.

Not that it’s bad to want to better our bodies, but it’s silly to put off looking nice until we lose that 10 pounds. You are still wonderful on the inside no matter what the scale says. So don’t wait, don’t stay in your yoga pants just because you think you should be a different size.

Why we wear clothes is to tell a story

But here’s the second fact about our clothes and what we wear. No matter what, you are telling a story with the outfit you are wearing that day. As much as we talk about not judging a book by it’s cover, the truth is we are visual animals. And while we may learn not to judge off appearances, we certainly still use appearances as a measure.

So even when you get dressed to go to the grocery store, think about the story you’re telling with your clothes. Do you want to look like a modern mama, or a frumpy friend? It’s all in your control, and if it seems like way too much work, then the best idea is to have some go-to outfits ready.

Why we wear clothes and the story it tells

You are Fabulous

So here’s your pep talk. We all need that from time to time. Of course there are days when you feel less than good, and ready to throw in the towel. Yet EACH and EVERY woman I have ever met have a story and life experiences that make them so interesting.

Trust me, your friends would say the same thing. You are fabulous. Therefore, you should dress to show that fabulousness. Even if you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt, you can still portray the amazing characteristics that are inside you with details or modern approaches.

Tips and Tricks

Make sure your clothing fits as well as it can. Alterations go a long way to make an off the rack clothing item look like it was made for you. If you can’t afford the extra cost for the alterations, then maybe you explore thrift stores where the clothing costs less. Either that or spend the time finding a couple of brands that fits you like a glove. Or heck, learn to sew. I bet you could pick up a sewing machine from a friend who isn’t using hers. And You-Tube has some amazing videos on how to do anything.

Update your closet with some modern pieces now and then. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a ton of money. Even picking up a modern piece of jewelry every year can go a long way to making an outfit look contemporary. Tassels anyone?

Steps to Find the Fabulousness

Okay, okay, but now you’re saying, I still don’t know where to start.

Start with 2 adjectives. You know, those words that your friends would use to describe you. Wade through the descriptions that are generic, but concentrate on the ones like creative or fun. Maybe you’re more comfortable with classic and friendly? Notice I said to think about the terms your friends use to describe you. Because they love us, while we tend to concentrate on our faults. Use the positive adjectives because the more you say it, the more you will believe it!

Our minds are VERY powerful, so if you tell yourself that your body is awful, of course you will think that every time you look in the mirror. So just stop that right now.

But take those 2 adjectives and see if your outfit lives up to them. If you’re creative, then maybe you should be embracing the print mixing. If you fall into the classic team, then breaking up a suit could be your outfit of choice.

So why we wear clothes may be a complex question to answer, it boils down to choosing items that work in your life with your body. And if it’s way too overwhelming for you, why not try out a personal stylist? It could be the best money you ever spent. Either that or for free you could keep reading different blogs. Just make sure to try out new and fun ideas, because you won’t change the way you look at fashion and style if you always do the same thing!!
