Styling a Beret: Ideas for Unique Winter Hats
Styling a beret along with other types of winter hats was a request from a reader. I still meet many women who don’t embrace the idea of wearing any hats, yet there can be so many advantages to them. Each of us will showcase 2 different types of winter hats, and I hope you will consider one or more of them.
Quote of the day: “There is no end to the good you can do, if you don’t care who gets the credit.” Florence Luscomb
In fact, one of my blogging friends, Nicole, just published a post about berets. Can they work for you? Of course they can. Please don’t fall into that thinking that you can’t wear either of these styles of hats!!
I think any style of hat can look good on ANY head. It’s the same idea behind picking the right glasses frame for your face that I just wrote about recently.
Insider tip: Not every type of hat is created equal. For instance, the felted wool hat my mom is wearing has a small brim, but there are ones with much bigger brims and overall shape. SO don’t say you can’t wear a type of hat….try them all!!!
In fact, I will tell you a quick personal story. When I first met my husband, we were trying to find him a hat for an upcoming vacation. We must have tried on 15 hats (and laughing wildly at most of them) before we landed on one that “looked okay.”
Yet now, he has over 20 different hats and looks great in all of them.
What is the difference? My theory is we are used to seeing hats on him now so they look fine. Before he wore them, our brains weren’t used to the look. Don’t fall into the trap that your face shape can’t wear a certain type of hat, please.
For today’s examples, Charlotte is showcasing not only a colorful beret from her past but also a neutral felted wool brimmed hat.

Styling a Beret
Charlotte has 2 berets in her collection even though she rarely wears them. This particular blue one is from her college days!! Seriously it’s older than I am. She bought it for a French Waterfront party that she attended, and has kept it ever since.
See both my mom and I wearing berets in the past.
While you may feel like a beret is intimidating, I would love to beg otherwise. Remember, it’s just a piece of material that is meant to give you joy!!!
If you ask, what is the correct way to wear it, I would say just put it on your head and experiment. Some women wear it covering their forehead, while other’s like it farther back on their head.
YOU need to decide how it looks best on you. Forget the idea that there is a right or wrong way to wear it.
The huge advantage of this blue beret and Charlotte’s outfit is how it adds some beautiful color to her face AND the overall look!!

Wool Winter Hat
The felted hats are a wonderful option for the cooler weather. One of the best points about these hats are the opportunity to add either a pin or scarf to them.
Charlotte shows another way to wear a felt hat with leather pants.
For example this brown hat, Charlotte purchased at Kohls. Then she added this felted flower pin from her travels overseas. Considering the entire outfit is a neutral palette, the flower gives it a focal point.
Insider tip: If your hat is too big, there is sizing tape that helps. My mom actually used some tape she had laying around that was for holding throw rugs in place, LOL!

Charlotte’s Thoughts about Hats
When I asked my mom about styling a beret or any hat for that matter, she admitted that she doesn’t wear them often. For her it’s because it messes up her hair. Yet as Lesley and I pointed out to her, it’s perfectly acceptable to leave your hat on once you put it on your head. So you consider it part of the outfit and don’t remove it until the end of the day.
Charlotte also doesn’t consider hats that common. And I have to agree. We certainly see many summer hats to shade us from the sun here in Arizona. But not as many fashion type of hats in the winter.
Insider tip: I have written a post about the how and whys to wear a hat on Kuel Life. This includes the myths about hats and how to counteract them.
Yet, the best part is how hats can be a wonderful styling tool to add interest to an outfit or even color to a look.

So tell me about you and hats!!! And let’s start a new trend wearing them at least once a week!!

My Goal
Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.
My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
