How to Style Track Pants (and Not for the Gym)

I appreciate each and every share. Thank you!

Do you remember when joggers first came on the fashion scene, and we all wondered if they were just glorified sweatpants? And then, before we knew it, they were everywhere, from casual Fridays to date night, and we learned that, yes, we could wear them for all kinds of occasions (as I have shown).
How to style track pants (yet not for the gym) is the exact same concept.

Quote of the day: “Talent is a pursued interest … Anything that you’re willing to practice, you can do.” Bob Ross

I’ve seen them all over the street style accounts. Track pants have officially made that same leap from sporty to stylish.

Pro tip: It’s that mindset that I keep pushing on you to stop categorizing our clothing. Sure, back in our day, track pants were exclusively for working out. But times have changed, and so should your attitude.

Today, I’m showing three ways to style track pants that prove they can be just as versatile, chic, and comfortable as anything else in your closet.
BTW, these ideas work with a track jacket too.

Insider detail: If you are unsure about a “trend” like this, but want to dip your toe into it, may I suggest thrifting? I found these pants secondhand, and they were “jogger” style. So I just removed the elastic at the bottom and created a straight-leg pant.

1. Casual with a Crop Top and Sneakers

For this first look, I wanted to take the idea of casual comfort.
I cuffed the bottoms of my track pants, which instantly gives them a more styled, intentional look (and it’s a great trick for showing off your ankles or fun sneakers).

Pro tip: Sometimes skin is a great styling option. Cuffing your sleeves or pants can help with proportions and overall impression.

Then I paired them with a cropped top and a light blue jacket. The jacket helps balance the shorter top by adding structure to the outfit.

I read one conservative creator say she couldn’t imagine wearing a blazer with track pants. I would, but we know that I’m eclectic.
If you can’t imagine a blazer with them either, then how about a different type of jacket? That’s why I wore this one.

Details:

-Sneakers come in all styles and colors, so I hope you have a fun variety in your closet. Both my mom (who is 87) and I have this same sparkle, star pair.
-I accessorized the crop top with a brooch in the middle (basically like a necklace without the chain).

2. Fancy with a Silky Top and Kitten Heels

Who says track pants can’t be fancy?
This idea reminds me of my first years as a fashion blogger. My original crew and I would take the same item and style it casually, formally, and smartly (similar to professionally).

Pro tip: The overall outfit is a blend of all items. It’s never ONE item that makes it this or that.

This type of outfit may even make you forget that the idea of this post is how to style track pants. You could get lost in all of the other details.

I paired them with a bright green silk blouse and added a scarf/pearl necklace combination.
Here’s the video where I show how I put the scarf together with the necklace.

To complete the outfit, I chose these tweed thrifted kitten heels.

Details:

-These kitten heels were tight across my bunions at first. However, after using these stretchers for 3 months, they are extremely comfy.
-I also added a brooch at my waist for added sparkle.

3. Worn with a Dress and Mules

Now, this one is my “why not?” moment.

Because fashion should be fun, right?

Here, I styled my track pants under a colorful off-the-shoulder dress. It’s a mix of patterns, lengths, and vibes that somehow all come together.

I’ve always said that layering unexpected pieces is one of the best ways to get more mileage from your wardrobe. A shorter dress or tunic can instantly become something new when paired over pants, even though it seems wrong from our upbringing.

Details:

-I created the “slit” in the dress by gathering the material and then putting a flower pin over it.
-These sleeves had “ties” on them, so I pulled them underneath and over to keep the shoulders from pulling up.
-And there’s a brooch at the neckline…shocker.

The Takeaway On How to Style Track Pants

Fashion is ever evolving. Just think about how years ago women didn’t wear pants.
The things that used to be considered “too casual” are now wardrobe staples, and track pants are the perfect example.

When you think about how to style track pants, it really comes down to one thing: fun and experimentation (okay, that’s 2 things, but basically the same).

Just think about dichotomy and the things you wouldn’t normally combine with the idea of how to style track pants.
Here are some basic ideas:

  • Pair them with something structured or polished.
  • Add texture or shine to make them look intentional.
  • Play with color or pattern.

Fashion is supposed to be fun and flexible, and track pants give you both. You can dress them up, dress them down, or mix them in ways that might surprise you.

This is my favorite way to make your wardrobe bigger and more versatile. Stop categorizing your clothing items. Sure, you normally think of track pants as “workout gear,” but now you have ideas to make them into “everyday wear.”

And that’s what I love about personal style. It’s all about breaking a few rules by trying new combinations, and realizing that comfort and style really can go hand in hand.
