Summer Shirts Styled for Casual Days and Errands

Quote of the day: “You are what you think about all day long.” Dr. Robert Schuller

Of course styles change throughout our lives, but one thing stays the same. The summer time tends to bring out the fun clothing!! There are many new details that I’ve seen recently and I thought it’d be interesting to incorporate summer shirts into a couple of posts.

I know when I was younger, my idea of summer shirts focused more on sleeveless and shorter. But that’s not the only characteristics that can make a shirt work for the hotter months!!

I’d also like to introduce Cindy, who met up with Rob & I this month for lunch. She lives in Denver and I “met” her on Instagram. She said she’d join in on this theme with the 3 of us, and it couldn’t be more perfect since her shirt is a different version than the ones I picked for us! She just started her own blog too, so click over and explore!!

Cindy’s (50+) Outfit: So Cindy chose a plain white men’s undershirt.

These kind of shirts can be perfect since they pair with everything!! And for Cindy, she just “borrowed” this one from her step son!! We’ve talked about “borrowing from the boys” before on this blog, and here’s another great example!!

In fact, Cindy’s flip flops used to be her mothers, so she’s channeling the entire family with this look!!

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: When I think of summer shirts, I think of white tops!!

Therefore I pulled out my new embroidered top from Chicos, that I purchased when we traveled out to LA to meet up with women of the Fierce 50! You may ask why would you want to go to a chain clothing store when you are traveling? But there are many times that I have found going to different geographic locations provide different selections from your hometown store!!

And I’ve been coveting an embroidered piece, so I snagged this one! There are some embroidered tops that are more subtle or ones that have more contrast like mine!

You can see in the lower photo how the arm holes are a little big. I was thinking I could alter the sleeves, but after I found out about the Mod Loops from our local boutique, I decided to wear my lace loop instead. You can wear them at your hips, but also around your chest. I realize you could also wear a camisole, but if you don’t want the full coverage, then the Mod Loops are a great alternative!

The other variation I made to this top is to gather it together at the bottom and rubber band the extra into a bow of sorts! I could shorten it, but then I also thought it might work as a bathing suit cover up!!

Mod Loops under summer shirts

Since I was meeting up with Cindy and then a couple of other bloggers this day, I really wanted to be creative and modern with my outfit. Therefore I pushed myself out of my box, and incorporated some print mixing.

I also accessorized with fringe in my purse and my earrings!! Have you ever thought about shopping in the kid’s section for purses? Me neither, but it could be smart. Check out the deal on this one and it’d be great if you don’t want a super large purse!!

Summer shirt with shorts

I usually wear sandals when I can in the summer, but I decided to add in my ankle boots. When we styled our ankle boots with dresses last fall, I really grew to love the look! I know many women will point out that it breaks the line of the leg! And I get that. But I also think it’s a very contemporary look!

Besides there are some very fun ankle boots available. Of course, my mom thinks it’s silly to have your toes exposed, but if you wear them in the summer, then it makes sense. Maybe if you just call them a covered sandal, you might like them better? For example this pair is almost like my pair but with a shorter heel! Or you could have all over perforations for some cooling!!

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: Nancy’s version of summer shirts came in the form of pom poms.

The funniest story was Nancy had texted me a photo from the dressing room, of a top she was considering buying. When I asked where she was, I found out I was just two doors down from where she was shopping! Therefore I hightailed it down to see her, and we ended up getting this shirt along with a couple of others for her!!

I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of off the shoulder shirts this season. And this shirt could definitely be one of those. But most of those off the shoulder shirts can be worn up over the shoulders too!

Do you think pom poms are too young for you? I think they add some whimsy to every age, so check out a couple of other items with pom poms at the bottom of the post!

Since Nancy was wearing white capris pants, we thought we’d accessorize with her white Coruu silicone necklace. The last time she wore it, it was against her skin, and didn’t show up as much.

If you do wear a lot of darker colors, then lighter colored necklaces can be perfect to stand out against the darker colors! Like this necklace is simple yet pretty! Or you could pick out a sparkly one!!

Summer Shirts with tassels

Blush is quite the color of the season!

In fact, if you sign up for my emails, you’ll also get a color combination focused around the color blush! It’s been such a hit with all of the bloggers and retailers, that there’s something for everyone.

Nancy just bought these sneakers in blush recently!! I think the blush shoes are a nice alternative to the nude shoes. And they come in all kinds of styles! You could opt for the slides, the flats, or the sandals!!

Summer shirts with capris

It’s a little funny, how the three of us are showing a variation of lengths of pants in this post! I’m wearing shorts, Nancy has on these capris that end right above her knee, and my mom has on culottes that are more of a midi length!

White pants are really the epitome of summer in my opinion, so what is your preferred length? There are longer capris, shorter capris, or full length linen pants!!

Charlotte’s (70+) Outfit: One of the concepts of summer shirts has to be the material of the shirt too!

This yellow lace shirt that my mom is wearing is the lightest weight cotton, and is perfect for the hotter months! I actually bought this shirt for myself last summer, but it was too big, so I handed it down to my mom!! You can see on the website how it’s made to be an off the shoulder shirt, yet it looks nice on the shoulders also! Just like Nancy’s shirt!

Summer shirts for women 70+

Of course my mom wanted to match her earrings to the color of the shirt!! But since we didn’t add in a necklace, we did opt for longer earrings!!

I really think that the statement earrings are a great choice with some of the more detailed tops. Since you don’t want to take away from the focus of the shirt by wearing a necklace, then you can have your earrings be more prominent!! For example, I’m a huge fan of the tassels, so these or these are super fun!! Okay, so that last pair was pretty darn big, however, these aren’t quite as cumbersome, yet will really stand out!!

Woman over 70 and summer shirts

For the bottom half of mom’s outfit we had her wear her jean culottes!!

These are the ones she received from Trendz, our local, Littleton boutique! If you compare them to that post, then you’ll be able to see that my mom shortened them by about 3 inches!! I can’t tell you how much difference, alterations can make in your clothing!!

And if you think that you’d never look good in some of the newer silhouettes that are being sold, I’d suggest trying them on!! It’s amazing how some of the items you see on a hangar, can look so different on your body!! Like the cropped flare jeans are a prime example that I’ve heard many women rave about only after they’ve tried them on!! If you don’t love the distressed part of those, then this pair would be better for you!

Summer shirts & jean culottes

My mom did pull out her nude sandals for this outfit! Even though they have a heel, they are a wider heel and are comfortable. The only drawback to this pair is the buckle on the side can make it challenging at times.

Have you seen the shoes with the zippers in the back? Those are really so convenient for taking on and off easily!! There are some great examples of how comfortable can look fashionable nowadays like with this pair and this pair!!

Our summer shirts don’t have to be skimpy or too exposed anymore. But with all of the interesting elements or pairings, they can certainly be fun!!

Thanks to one and all of you for your support. It means more than you know!

  • Jodie, you are rocking those fabulous printed shorts! Those legs, my friend, are gorgeous! And I love the print mixing you did here, too. Nancy’s blue pom pom top and white necklace are super chic and create a fun sophisticated summer vibe. And Charlotte looks dazzling and chic in her denim culottes! I am loving the pale yellow on her, for sure! Great work, ladies, as always! And as always, thanks so much for linking up with me.

      Thanks!!

  • Is it just me that thinks it is strange that they even have a section of purses for kids? Ha ha! But it is a brilliant idea to look there. Especially since I like small handbags.

    • It’s totally you, Suzanne….ha ha!! I think I had some purses as a kid, because I wanted to look like my mom. I’ll have to search my old photos now, because I’m not sure if I’m imagining it or not!!
      XOXO

  • What great looks for all of you! Charlotte looks lovely in yellow and Nancy’s necklace is fabulous!
Jodie, your outfit is so on point! Very fresh. Very modern. I love the little adjustments you made to the top to really make it your own! The shorts are adorable! And I love the booties with it. Yes, some may say they COULD cut the leg line, but I think with the heel and the tan, almost nude shade it gives an elongating effect that really works. And they’re much more modern looking than a traditional sandals.

    • Thanks so much Ronnie!!
I have been so intrigued with the ankle booties and shorts or even skirts & dresses lately!! In fact, you’ll see the same theme again for me in a couple of weeks!!
      XOXO

  • Judy Gramith

Look at you in those short shorts!!! Great legs Jodie and good to see you don’t have an unhealthy tan!
Your top is exactly the kind of design I have loved since my college years. Your embroidered top is so beautiful and I like your pattern mix too! Nancy’s pom pom trim is very cute and i think this is an ageless embellishment. Her blush sneakers rock!! I want them!!! I love Charlottes top and her bottoms look more like a culotte than a capri! Cindy is darling in her hat and cut off shorts. The flowers are so fun!!
    Another fine post!!

    • It’s taken me a long time to embrace my pale skin, but it’s all because of my husband. Of course a couple of skin cancer surgeries didn’t hurt either!! But I remember being young, and thinking it couldn’t happen to me, so I don’t try to lecture others!!
I bought this top to go with some print pants at the same time!! So you’ll definitely be seeing it again!! But I loved it with these shorts too—obviously, I like sorta the same things, huh??
Thanks for all of the lovely thoughts—I made sure to forward this comment to everyone!!!

  • Terri Webster Schrandt

I love your chico’s peasant top. You make an excellent point about shopping a chain store in other locations. I have found your observation to be true about finding different styles in other locations. West and East coast will have the latest styles I’m told and it reflects in the stores. When we shop the outlets in East San Diego, ironically I find better winter shoes there, crazy huh? (considering I live in Sacramento where the weather is more extreme) 🙂

    • That’s so interesting about the outlets in San Diego, Terri!! You wonder how and why they get what they get!!
      Thanks!!
      XOXO

  • My mom says the same thing about peep toes in fall. She keeps telling me to wear my peep toe shoes before the weather gets colder! Love each of your looks!

    • Our mom’s should get together, Lanae!!
But I find that if most of my foot is covered, that it really keeps pretty warm, even if it’s chilly out. It’s really not much different than having a shirt on but your head sticks out, right??
      Thanks!!

Love all your summer shirts! Each of your tops or outfits have so many fun details that really help add interest! I like going to chain stores in different locations too. They definitely have different items in different areas!

    • Thanks Laura!! I do love the details on things lately!! So it’s no wonder that I’m loving all of these shirts!!

You ladies are AMAZINGGG!!!!!! Love all your looks. SO PRETTY!

    Have a fabulous week ladies!

    Much love, Len

  • I love your shirt here, Jodi, but I also love those shoes! Such cute ankle boots.

    • Aren’t they fun, Lisa?? The funniest thing about these shoes/boots, is I always considered them shoes. So one time my husband says I have a pair of peep toe booties—and for the life of me, I thought he was going crazy! I made him come into the closet and show me!! And it made me realize that we categorize our clothes when we get them, and then don’t always see them in other ways!!
      XOXO

  • Great to see something geared for me-a woman over 60!

    • Thanks so much Debbie!!
That’s exactly the whole idea—-because we get better as we get older, right??

  • Love all the pretty details on these tops! Your top Jodie is my fave. Blue and white is so classic for summer!

      Thanks!!

  • Rebecca Saffer

Wow Jodie – you have the figure of a teenager! Terrific summer looks. I always love the look of embroidery and eyelet details on summer tops. I haven’t seen pique or dotted Swiss much any more (boy does this date me!!) but love those fabrics for summer as well. You all look great.

    • I bet my mom has some dotted swiss in her closet, Rebecca!! She doesn’t throw anything out!!
And thanks for the compliment!! I think since I retired and lost all of the stress from the business, I’ve been able to get in better shape!!
      XOXO

  • your shorts are so fun. Love the pattern

    • Thanks Linda!! If you like these, then you’ll love the pants I bought at Chicos to go with this top!!
      XOXO

  • Girl…the first thing that caught my eye was your pattern mixing. Great job! Then, I saw those fab booties and I thought d@mn girl…look at you go!!! LOVE IT!
    http://styleforlessvegas.wordpress.com

    • I bought this shirt along with a pair of print pants at Chicos—I thought this print mixing was right up my alley. And then these shorts are kinda like the new pants—so heck, why not/?
Thanks for the words of encouragement….I still wonder if I’m too old for shorts some days??
      XOXO

  • Oh, all of your tops have such wonderful details! They definitely make a statement even styled quite casually. Love your pattern mix and the addition of the peep toe booties.

    • I do love these more detailed shirts lately!! Not that the basics are every bad, but fun is fun!!
      XOXO

  • donnaduck

Hi Jodie! I’m always amazed at how my style and Nancy’s are so similar! But then, since I’m 61, I guess our style views come from the same place in time! Love her top, and no, I don’t think pom-poms are for the young only! “Young at heart” is the phrase I think of!!! Your blouse and your mom’s are just adorable too. I find myself shying away from plain t-shirts on casual days anymore. I just love the style of a detailed top- embroidery, ruffles, interesting sleeves, whatever- a bit more than the t-shirts I used to wear with jeans and capris. Not that I don’t like the way your guest blogger has her white shirt (so cute with the cut-offs and neck scarf!), but I seem to be leaning in another direction right now. Hmm, maybe my fashion style evolves as I I get older- something to think about!

Thanks again for your blog- I really do enjoy seeing what you come up with! XOXO

    • I love that phrase—young at heart! Because really, it is so true. We certainly don’t feel old on the inside (except when the aches pop up–ha ha).
And really, evolving is a good thing, in my opinion!! I certainly don’t want to look the same as I did 20 years ago (for more than one reason). I do think about these fun shirts in terms of accessories. When I wear these detailed shirts–I think it’s perfect for women that don’t want to pull out the jewelry. But I also think they just make us smile!!!
Thanks for the wonderful encouragement….it never gets old to hear you say that!!
      XOXO

  • Amy K

Everyone looks lovely! And Jodie I love your top and your bag! Great idea with the lace loop! And the outfit looks adorable with your shoes!

    • Thanks Amy!! I can’t decide if I’m going to try to alter the sleeves of this shirt or just make sure I always wear it with the lace loop!!
      XOXO

  • The details on these tops are all so pretty! I’ve been loving embroidery, pom poms, and crochet details for summer!
    By Lauren M

    • Thanks Lauren—these details do make our shirts a little more fun!!
      XOXO

  • I’d wear any one of those tops! One of each please!!!!

The pom-detailed items you linked are also SUPER cute. Wishing the Anthropologie shirt was a little longer… (swooning over that sleeve detail). I know shorter tops are allegedly returning, but I’m just. not. ready.

    • That made me laugh, Em!! I have a couple of shorter shirts, but I end up wearing a cami with them for comfort!! But we’ll be all over it when the high rise jeans are back in our closets..haha!!
      XOXO

  • Bev @ Walking Well With God

    Jodie,
I loved the tops….embroidery, poms, and lace make for fun summer frills. I find that sometimes gathering a top at the waist helps me to look like I have more of a waist…as always enjoyed your post!
    Blessings,
    Bev xx

    • Thanks Bev!!
I love gathering the top at the waist lately—it seems so boring to just let it hang out and do nothing!!
      XOXO

  • Karen

I love your mom’s culottes. I mention this first because you are right, you have to try things on. I tried some of these wide ones in the spring and they looked great. shocked me! The ones I wanted didn’t have my size, so I passed but promised myself to get some! It’s all about proportions, but I loved them. I saw hers today and just love those!! Your top is beautiful! I do love embroidery, and while it seems to be trending, I don’t think it ever goes out of style. I have a beach cover up with tassel ties that I got about 5 years ago, before the embroider trend hit, and the tassel trend, and there you go! I wear it now with jeans as well. Your booties look great with this look. It’s kind of like “the unexpected” – you would expect sandals, then you see the booties and it really works! Love your earrings and how they tie in with the tassels on the top. I agree about different geographical locations having different offerings. Happens all the time for some reason and it’s always worth it to check it out. And besides, who cares where you got something as long as you love it, right? Nancy’s top is so cute with the pom poms. I think the necklace even dressed it up a little – and I love the blush shoes!! Great idea using the blush color in accessories like that. I would never know that Cindy is wearing a guy’s shirt! It doesn’t look “guyish” on her at all! Cute torn skirt. For some reason I really like the frayed hems.

    • Thanks so much Karen!!!! It’s always so nice to hear your thoughts about all of the details that I give on the blog!!
I totally know what you mean about the wide legged pants. We get so used to the skinny, that we think it’s all we should wear!! Yet the different silhouettes can look just as good—it’s a great surprise!!
And I’ve been liking the frayed hem too–even on my jeans! It’s not as obvious a distressing as the hole in the knees, maybe??
      XOXO

  • These tops are gorgeous! Especially love the detail on yours Jodie.
