A Guide to Styling Necklaces with Layering
The idea of a guide to styling necklaces is all because of a reader’s suggestion. Jayne requested, “I would like information on styling necklaces, particularly in view of my age and my neck and decolletage which are showing signs of age.”
Quote of the day: “I believe people are in our lives for a reason. We’re here to learn from each other.” Gillian Anderson
And learn from each other we do. Sure, Charlotte, Lesley and myself are the ones showcasing the outfits, but it’s from your suggestions and comments that we learn from you. For me, it’s all about keeping an open mind especially to ideas and styles you aren’t 100% sure you’ll like.
For example if you are concerned about how your decolletage looks, an obvious solution is to wear a higher cut top. Yet you also don’t want to have to go out and buy all new tops.
So here we are to the rescue with three ideas of styling necklaces to address Jayne’s concern. Charlotte started with a statement necklace. Make sure to check out my idea.

In Lesley’s Words
You might think Lesley’s necklace is all one piece. But it’s not. It’s made up of three different elements. Join along as she describes how it all came about in her words:
“I started this look with a turquoise necklace made up of many strands with tiny gold beads. Gold and turquoise is rather unusual, but I decided to keep the pairing rather then forcing the usual silver into the mix.
*** Digging into several different jewelry storage places ( I don’t have a organized system to my jewelry. But have the delight of finding pieces I’ve forgotten I had. Sort of a treasure hunt)***
Next came the gold discs on clear filament that could carefully be woven into the turquoise. Then I needed some long gold pieces to carry the eye down and add to coverage above neckline of top. A lot of playing here but something was still missing…..AH HA!!! I found a brushed gold clip earring from early 90″s and attached it low and off center for a focal /exclamation point. Ta Da.”

Insider tip: The icing on the cake is adding that clip earring as part of the necklace. I recently added a brooch to a pearl necklace, and now I need to remember this trick.
A Great Layering Trick
While most of us think of layering necklaces by finding ones of all different lengths like I’ve done in the past. Yet the idea of making them look like all one piece is a good trick also. I experimented once with this on Instagram after seeing Lesley’s necklace from this outfit. I think I can do better next time, but you don’t know unless you try.
Insider tip: Take photos of your outfits daily, so you can look back and see what you liked and didn’t like. The camera lens sees your outfit in a different proportion than your brain does in the mirror.
BTW, this necklace reminds me of the ones that Chico’s used to carry. I like how many of their accessories are bigger, fun and many times asymmetrical. I didn’t see many asymmetrical options in their newest selections, but they still have wonderful pieces.

Pops of color with the Purse
Our purse can be more than just a functional element. Even though this was never on my radar until we started blogging, I have found it to be a great truth. If you are out and about, people will notice your purse. Especially if it’s bright, colorful or whimsical.
And remember, the colors in your outfit do not have to match the purse. They just have to go and play well together. For example Lesley’s tote bag brings in some greens and pinks that all look great with the outfit.
Insider tip: Putting the focus on your purse can be a great distraction. Why would you need a distraction? Say you’re having a bad hair day or you have a zit on your nose.

Color Combination
Color combinations can be inspired by so many elements around us. In this instance Lesley chose the coral topper because coral and turquoise are often seen together in southwestern native jewelry designs.
Especially when you have a column of color with the black skirt and top, you can add in any other colors. This column of color is fabulous with a white top and skirt also or any neutral combination.
FYI, this skirt is actually a skort. I feel like it’s such an easy way to make us feel more comfortable in a skirt. Who cares if they aren’t being shown everywhere now? No one really knows it’s a skort unless you show them.

Loafers
Comfortable shoes are one of the biggest concerns for most of my friends. Sure, it depends on where you are going and if you’re going to be walking a lot. Lesley has always loved loafers and we laughed when she realized these are a snakeskin print. She doesn’t really like snakeskin. But having a fun color with your shoes can far outweigh the texture.
Here’s a couple of examples of fun loafers if your shoe collection needs any additions.

Toppers in the Summer
Let’s talk toppers. Sure, when the temperature climbs, you don’t need extra layers for outside. However, I always joke that I need my jacket for the inside in the summer. Many restaurants and stores (when we are allowed to visit them again) tend to have the air conditioning on full blast. And it can be uncomfortable.
That’s why Lesley added in this lightweight cardigan. Even if she wasn’t wearing the cardigan, the necklace would still be the star of the show and contrast nicely against the black background.
Insider tip: One of my friends said she keeps a denim jacket in her car at all times to take into the stores. She figures denim goes with everything, and she’s right.

My Goal
Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.
My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
