When your friends give you different fashion styles

Different Fashion Styles Put Together by Friends

Putting together different fashion styles is not always easy because we get into habits and ruts. Another reason could be because we feel safe in what we wear. But you know me, I’m here to push us a little and to have fun with our clothes.

Quote of the day: “Some succeed because they are destined. Some succeed because they are determined.” Anonymous

I loved this quote because many of my friends think it’s too hard to create different fashion styles and see no reason to try it. Maybe they’ve even tried it once; however, didn’t feel successful. While it comes more easily to some people, I do think creativity can be learned.

Insider tip: Brain health can be part of creating different fashion styles. I worked with a brain coach once who explained the many ways how shopping and style can help our brain in this post, this post, and this post.

This week brings a totally different theme where we “styled” each other from that person’s closet. While I did this purely for a fun distraction, I came up with some reasons that it could be extremely beneficial for you to do with your bestie. You can read those reasons in the post where Lesley and I styled Charlotte. And then see how Lesley and Charlotte styled me.

For this fun adventure, the “stylists” wore all black or all white so the focus would be on our “client”. We were taking this seriously…haha. Notice the chalkboard sign says “Shoot here today for Jodie’s Touch of Style.”

I consider this one way to get out of a style rut. Need more ideas? I have an entire article about it.

Stylists to help with different fashion styles

Charlotte looked through Lesley’s clothes and focused on this pair of shorts/capris that are blue and white polka dots. In fact, I’m not sure the “correct” name for these since they are below the knee, but does it matter?

Insider tip: Stop categorizing clothing. We tend to put items in a category which can limit our selections. For example these “pants” of Lesley’s. If you called them shorts, some women would never try them on because they don’t wear shorts. It’s the same thought with “capris” because you read many articles where capris are old ladyish.
I believe an item itself isn’t frumpy per se, but how we style it, like I talked about in my Frumpy post.

Print mixing with blues

My mom did say that since Lesley put her in blue and pink, she would return the favor. Pastels are not a color combination we see much on Lesley, so it was nice to experiment with it.

My mom also intentionally wanted to style print mixing for Lesley, so added in the plaid blouse. It’s one reason that my mom kept the pink top hanging below the blouse, to break up the prints slightly. Yet this is a great example of successful print mixing since the short’s print is small and the blouse print is large.

Lesley doesn’t print mix often, but she did pair this same top with another print once.

The pink shoes, and bracelet tied in with the pink top and pink in the plaid blouse. Then the blue earrings and purse tied in with the blue from the plaid blouse. Since my mom tends to like matchy matchy, she passed that onto Lesley.

How different fashion styles can make you feel

Now for my turn with Lesley’s closet. I saw this orange tank dress that Lesley had purchased when we were shopping together a year ago back in Denver. And the tags were STILL on it, so I figured this would be perfect for our shoot.
In fact, it reminded me of our Ageless Style group’s theme from a couple of months ago when we were asked to style something we hardly wear. Fess up, do you have anything like that in your closet?

Insider tip: I always TRY to wear the new things I’ve bought right away. Or at least style them a couple of ways so I know how to wear them when the temperature is right. When you style them in your closet, make sure to try them on!
This is no different than my posts where I style the same piece 5 different ways. It makes you realize how versatile that item really is.

Flounce for older women

As soon as I picked out this dress, I knew I wanted Lesley to wear the leopard shoes she had just purchased this year. Leopard is not something Lesley embraced until lately, and it goes so wonderfully with the orange.

Of course, I wanted to have some print mixing in the outfit too, so I pulled out the blouse to tie over the dress. I think the plaid blouse also tames down the flounciness of the dress to make it a tad less “girly”.

I had Lesley layer two different necklaces and put her in these fabulous earrings. Then I chose this cute neutral purse that ties it all together.

Insider tip: When your earrings match your hair, it’s better to pull back your hair so they will show. I wish I had thought to do that with this look. Either that or paint the earrings a color that contrasts with your hair. It seems a shame to have these amazing earrings and no one will notice them otherwise.

Leopard and Plaid

Conclusion

Again, it’s a tad funny how similar the outfits are to a degree. For Charlotte, Lesley and I both styled a blue and pink outfit. For Lesley, Mom and I chose different color combinations yet Lesley ended up with a front tie in her top. Maybe it’s because Lesley tends to wear longer tops and we wanted to give her some different fashion styles?

Talking about our experience afterward, Lesley truly enjoyed this as much as we did. It’s truly amazing how others will pair different fashion styles right from your own closet. That’s why it can be beneficial for you to try this same idea with your friends.
The best thing is even if you don’t like one of the outfits, it’s not a permanent thing. Yet you may learn how your closet is much more versatile than you thought.

Now another option along these same lines would be to borrow from each other’s closet. Lesley shows how she did that here.

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
