How to Wear Pink in October with Interesting Color Combinations

We wear pink in October for breast cancer awareness. Yet I know that I usually pair pink with certain colors, and only those colors. Therefore, I wondered if we could showcase some interesting color combinations so our fashion style wouldn’t stand still.

Quote of the day: “Be not afraid of growing slowly, be afraid only of standing still.” Chinese Proverb

I talk about pink and how it’s really hit the clothing market in the video below. It’s one of those colors that was considered too girly when I was growing up, yet now it’s everywhere. And you don’t have to only wear the pastel version, there are all kinds of shades of it that will look good with your complexion.

Today we ventured out to downtown Denver where they were having their Doors Open Denver event. You can read more about this venue we toured below.

Why I Wore This Outfit

This combination came about with one of those happy accidents. I was shopping at a Goodwill Event and wearing this yellow jacket. Then I got a little warm, and threw my jacket into the shopping cart. When I pulled this bright pink dress off the racks and put it on top of the jacket, it was one of those “aha” moments.

Not that I haven’t paired pink and yellow together before. Two years ago I had seen bloggers combining yellow and pink and wanted to try it myself. And it’s a combination that I liked, but I just don’t think about it much.

How You Could Change This Outfit

I could see how these colors together might be too bright for some of you. If that’s the case, then maybe a darker color with the bright pink would be something better?

When you have a bright colored dress, another way would be to pair it with a lighter print.

Interesting Tidbit

Since we would be walking a lot on this day of tours around Denver, I wanted to try out this new pair of flatform sneakers. Not that I was looking to buy flatform sneakers, but we happened to venture into TJ Maxx the other day, and these were such a great deal. The material isn’t as soft as our Walking Cradle sneakers, but not every shoe can be the most comfy ever, I guess. It was the gold color that I figured would work with so many outfits.

Why Nancy Wore This Outfit

I requested that Nancy combine red and pink, to wear pink in October. I thought this would be a challenge because I think of it as one of those “no no” combinations from when I was growing up. She talks about how she felt the same way in the video, so to make it work for her, she added in the grey jeans.

The three of us styled pink and grey many years ago, and the addition of red isn’t much different than when we added in fuchsia. And I love that Nancy cuffed her jeans for this outfit. She’s wearing the same jeans 3 years ago, and I think this small detail makes them very contemporary. Just like we talked about ankle pants and what shoes to wear with them.

How You Could Change This Outfit

Since pink and red are from the same hue, it seems obvious that we could pair them together. Just like you would pair light blue and dark blue. But those fashion rules of yesteryear are hard for some of us to break. Therefore, adding in another neutral would be just as pretty. Like a white top. And then if you kept the purse as is, you’d still have the same color combination, just not right next to each other.

Another option if you want to dip your toe into the red and pink together would be to add in a print top with red in it. Then there’s some other color to break out the pick and red combination.

This necklace was handed down to Nancy, when my Aunt Nancy passed away. My aunt had a boatload of jewelry she had accumulated, so my cousin very generously allowed us to choose a few pieces from her collection. We posted with our Aunt Nancy items last year when this happened. It’s always so nice when pieces bring back memories like these do.

Should I wear pink in October as a lady in middle age

Why Charlotte Wore This Outfit

I asked my mom to add brown to her pink item. We all know that neutrals go with everything, but I think the brown neutral is sometimes overlooked. Most of us think of black or white when we think of neutrals, but brown can be just as versatile. This is great for fall when you want to wear pink in October.

Usually my mom sticks with two colors in her outfits and keeps to the matching idea. But I like that she added in this scarf that even has some varying shades of pink and browns. To me it adds a little life to the outfit.

If brown isn’t your neutral of choice, then any other neutral would work wonderfully with this light pink. A navy dress or even denim dress would darken up the pastel color. Of course your LBD would be another easy way to make the pastel feel more sophisticated.

This pink kimono is the one that my mom made this summer. The material is actually drapery material and all three of us have a version of it in different lengths. It’s nice to see it opened like this because in the other post, she had it buttoned shut.

And these earrings my mom is wearing. There are from the 1960’s and used to be clip ons. This is one DIY that is pretty easy if you have an older pair of earrings that you’d like to update. Just pull off the clip metal and superglue on the post.

Tips & Tricks

I know we all get into ruts with our clothing and color choices. But I’m of the belief that ANY two colors can go together. Even if they are ones that you were “told” that shouldn’t be worn together. Like black and navy. And red and pink. Be daring! Have fun with your color choices.

So how do you step outside the usual colors that you always pair together? I think sometimes they happen by happy accidents like mine did above. But another easy way is to take your pink item and hold it up to everything else in your closet.

And then let me know your favorites??

This photo is inside the Cruise Room. It’s the historic bar in the Oxford Hotel and the room is actually shaped like a wine bottle. The inside is pink which I lightened up for our photos, but was on theme for the post!

Can you wear pink in October in Denver

These photos were taken at the Oxford Hotel in Denver. Since it’s right up the street from Union station where the train let off people coming into Denver, it was the smart place to build a hotel back in the day. And history abounds in this place. It’s the only hotel that still has a wood burning fireplace which we all posed in front of.

And on this fabulous tour we were able to see the Presidential Suite where Theodore Roosevelt and Muhammad Ali have stayed. There is also a haunted room where a woman murdered her lover and then committed suicide.

If you happen to visit Denver, this could be the hotel you’d love to stay at especially if you love Bourbon. They have a bourbon tasting every day for the guests. And thanks to our wonderful tour guide pictured above with the bird for such great information. The bird in the hotel lobby is to pay homage to the miners of the olden times.
