Wearing our Go To Pieces Makes Us Feel Great

Quote of the day: “Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground.” Theodore Roosevelt

I know many of us get into ruts or habits with our clothing choices. Yet it’s not always a bad thing. It’s nice to have items and combinations that are easy go to pieces for those days that we don’t want to have to think about what to wear.

So I gave us the challenge of showing what our go to pieces would look like put together in an outfit. Needless to say, this could be different for every different occasion or season. When we took these photos it may say spring on the calendar, but the wind was having a heyday. And I didn’t give any direction on whether we should dress for a casual or dressy time. So you can see the variety of our preferences in what we chose.

Jodie’s (50+) Outfit: I will say that even my mom kids me that my uniform is a pair of skinny jeans and a top.

I do feel like white jeans are my go to jeans more than any others. We’ve styled them many times on the blog because I seem to have a love affair with them. In my opinion they brighten up any outfit and make all other colors pop.

I realize that they may get dirtier than other pairs of jeans, which is why I usually have a couple pair in my closet. You can also dye them once they get too stained for comfort if they still fit well.

My other go to piece is a jacket or blazer. I love that they seem to pull me together, even if I’m just wearing a t-shirt under it. This particular blazer I’ve had for over 10 years and I bought it at a thrift store. In fact, I used to wear it all the time when I was working. I don’t always wear the matching belt, but I thought I would today.

Now if you’re retired, you may not see the reason to keep your blazers. I would disagree; however, there are other jackets that could work for everyday. I see a ton of utility jackets, bomber jackets or even kimonos that would be wonderful.

My other go to piece is my pop of color with a purse.

I will admit that this is a newer concept to me, since I never really thought about how a purse finishes off the look of the outfit. Yet this yellow purse has been in my closet for years. And since yellow is my favorite color, it’s certainly has had a ton of wear.

If you haven’t purchased a yellow purse yet, then the summer is a wonderful time to add one to your outfits. It’s not like you have to spend a lot of money on them either. I found this one, this one and this one all for under $50. Of course, if you’re a pineapple fan, you may absolutely need this one.

The last piece of my outfit I considered for this post is my shoes. I will admit that I am a shoeaholic and I adore my heels. Certainly I don’t wear them for a full day of walking, but I do love how they can spruce up any outfit, including jeans.

This particular pair I’ve had for over 5 years. I know, because I used to wear them at work. Patients used to comment that they couldn’t believe I wore such high heels all day. But remember, I sat on my butt most of the day…LOL! Besides, I did wear them with work pants, so you only saw about half of them as the other half was covered with my pant legs.

Nancy’s (60+) Outfit: When I asked Nancy what her go to pieces were for this outfit, she replied she thinks of classic pieces that fit well and are becoming.

The first item she chose was this skirt because she’d worn it recently, and has always gotten so many compliments on it. Of course I have to say that Nancy wasn’t sure about a pencil skirt when we picked this up a couple of years ago.

It’s a great lesson that you never know until you try something on. Even if it’s something that in the past didn’t work for you. You might be surprised at the difference in materials or even your changing body.

For the top half, Nancy picked her lace blouse that she loves because she doesn’t have many like it in her closet. You can see how Nancy’s worn it many times on the blog, and she wears it that much in real life too.

I also love that Nancy wore her choker necklace for this outfit. I think it’s a modern item that gives a little pizzazz to the whole look. You can see that Nancy doesn’t wear it so it’s super tight around her neck.

The other part of Nancy’s outfit that is one of her favorites are these shoes.

I’ve probably talked about ankle straps on shoes so much you’re tired of hearing about them. Yet they really do help to make the shoe stay on when you’re walking. These shoes Nancy has had for eons, yet they get worn every season.

This print cardigan has been a versatile go to piece that Nancy bought when we had our Chico’s Event last year.

Having a statement cardigan or topper can be the easiest way to add interest to an outfit. There are many examples under $100 that would work for this idea. You could opt for a grey print jacket, a long vest, or even a fun kimono.

Charlotte’s (80+) Outfit: My mom’s go to pieces are usually ones that she has created or just purchased.

That’s why she chose this white dress and plaid vest for this post. Both were hand made by her many years ago, and she always get compliments on the pair.

The other item she is wearing is her moto jacket that we picked up last year at Macy’s. She really likes it because it’s the latest style. Especially with the two different colors, it’s also more interesting than your normal moto jacket.

If you haven’t embraced the moto jacket yet, there is something for everyone even under $100. There’s a peplum version to make the jacket more feminine. I also found a metallic version, a perforated version, a tie-dye version, along with the widely loved black ones.

Wearing our go to pieces as a woman dressed elegantly

Most of us realize that we don’t have to match our footwear to our purse as the rules used to dictate.

Yet I know, my mom tends to do this quite a bit because it’s easy and seems right. She gravitates towards matching in her outfits overall, which I would consider her style. You can see in this outfit, she’s styled a very neutral colorway with everything basically matching.

Of course she also had to wear an owl pin since she collects anything owl related. My mom was big into owls even before you saw them much in retail. Now you can find them on watches, earrings, rings and t-shirts.

This dress in particular is made for the cooler weather with a high neck and long sleeves. But it’s a perfect example, of how you can start breaking out your white dresses even if the weather isn’t cooperating. I think a white dress is a must have for the warmer weather, and we’ve styled them on the blog 2 years ago.

To me, a white dress is as versatile as your LBD. You could opt for a midi length one, an asymmetrical neck dress or the ever flattering fit and flare style.
