What to Wear on a Road Trip

Everyone has a different idea of what to wear on a road trip. I shared my thoughts including the reasons I like a dress. And here is Charlotte with her ideas.

Quick note: I am asking for your input in a survey about 3 subjects inquiring minds have asked about recently. In return I will be randomly choosing 2 lucky winners who will each receive a $25 online gift card.

Quote of the day: “In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action.” Aristotle

Our road trip was a short two hour jaunt to a town called Jerome. If you’ve ever been to Arizona, then you know the summers are a tad warm. Therefore, we have been trying to visit places that are not as hot. Jerome is a higher elevation, and therefore tends to be 10-15 degrees cooler.

I’m also including some memories of my mom having road trips when she was younger. In fact, I hope you saw the photo I included in my email from when she was in college!
Don’t forget to check out Lesley’s outfit too because she has an interesting trick that her mom used to include on their road trips.

What to Wear on a Road Trip

Sheer tunic

Pants: Made by mom ~~ Sheer Top: Target ~~ Shoes: Jambu c/o ~~ Earrings: Amrita Singh~~ Purse: ~~Hat: thrifted

When I asked my mom why she wore this outfit, she said she chose pieces that were lightweight and cool. There is also the fact that we knew we would be sightseeing once we arrived at our destination. Therefore the comfortable sneakers, hat and cross body purse.

An Outfit isn’t Complete without Accessories

There are many different schools of thought on how long it takes to create a habit. For my mom, she’s been adding accessories to her outfits for at least over 50 years, so it’s definitely a habit! In fact, she will tell you that she feels naked without them.

Since it was warmish, my mom went with the trick of wearing statement earrings and no necklace. You can see how she wore these same earrings with a teal top in the past.

I like how the orange purse is a totally different pop of color. Yet when Charlotte turns around, you can see the decoration on her hat also brings in that same color.

Insider tip: Don’t be afraid of buying a hat with a color band around it. If it’s not a color you like per se, you can 1-remove it or 2-tie a different colored scarf over it.

Sheer?

I have heard women say that they stay away from sheer pieces because you have to layer them. And adding another step is not what everyone wants. Sure, that’s understandable. Yet the idea of decorating our bodies with pretty things can be beneficial to our mood.

Sheer pieces can be so advantageous because my mom would never wear a sleeveless top like the blue one by itself anymore. Yet with the sheer tunic over it, she feels more comfortable.
When my mom first got this sheer tunic, she tried wearing it with a mint tee. Yet then you couldn’t see the design. Luckily her daughter gave her the idea to wear it with a darker color which she did in a previous post.

Insider tip: Remember contrasting colors can be a good thing. It’s no different than wearing a contrasting necklace when it hangs over the top of the blouse. Otherwise it blends in and you don’t see it.

Creating a top out of a kimono too, can be another way to find a lightweight top. Most kimonos are made for the summer, and you can basically pin it to fit as you like.

Pants for what to wear on a road trip

Pants for Summer

Lightweight pants are the ones we gravitate towards in the hotter months. That’s why this is when you see more palazzo pants too. Lightweight and loose are the way to go.

You could consider a non wrinkly detail as part of your what to wear on a road trip, so you look fresh when you get to the end. You’d never realize she’d been sitting in the car for over 2 hours in this outfit.
My mom made this pair of swiss dot pants when a friend gifted her the material.

Sneakers from Jambu

Everyday Shoes

Some road trips are all about the car trip while others are a short version to get you to your destination. Since our trip was short, and we were going to explore the area when we arrived, my mom wore comfortable sneakers. I compared the 4 brands that we have been wearing the most on our adventures, and they definitely get a good workout.
This pair of sneakers is by Jambu. My mom likes that they are open on the top and thus cooler in the summer.

Insider tip: If you are looking for the best no show socks with your sneakers, make sure to check out Sheec. For the hotter months, the liners are more lightweight. They also have a sock version too. Use the code Jodie for 15% off.

Memories

When Charlotte was in the 7th grade, her family of 5 took a road trip east to New England from Indiana. They stayed at motels and every morning before they got in the car, her dad would line them up and take a photo. (That’s why my mom is such a good model now, LOL).
Then when my mom was 16, her family traveled down to New Mexico and went through Carlsbad Caverns. She remembers the bats!! Then they went to Mexico. In Mexico they saw a bull fight and she remembers seeing wolf horns on the cars which was frightening to her.

I hope you saw her photo from the email today….she was the long legged beauty in the striped top. It was on one of her girlfriend trips to the coast!!
