Fancy Ways to Wear a Scarf With a Red Dress
Lesley is the queen of fancy ways to wear a scarf. Of course, when you are a hammer, isn’t every solution a nail? I say that because Lesley has a ton of scarves and I love that she is open to wearing them so many ways.
Quote of the day: “Just try new things. Don’t be afraid. Step out of your comfort zones and soar.” Michelle Obama
I can read quotes all day, but the real question is do we take them to heart and follow the message? Stepping out of our comfort zone is not only scary but hard. If you’re anything like me then you know how comfortable routine feels and the feeling that we are in control.
Yet finding fancy ways to wear a scarf shouldn’t be that scary. A scarf is only a piece of material and doesn’t bite. So this post is a nudge to try some other options with what you have. It’s not only good for your brain but also your wardrobe.
The idea for this week of posts started with the idea of styling scarves for a bigger chest. And our guest model, MK, showed how to use a magnet for styling her scarf. In fact, there are many other accessories that help with your scarves. Yet like anything it evolved to incorporate styling tricks and other options. I love how Lesley has also taken a solid colored dress and changed the look with two different scarves and ways to wear them. Let’s examine the details below.
A Woman in Red

A red dress is certainly one of those basic pieces that work for so many occasions. I think we can all agree that Lesley looks marvelous in this especially with her statement necklace.
You can see Charlotte in a red dress here.

Wearing a Scarf as a Belt

Wearing a scarf as a belt isn’t super new and crazy. Heck, in fact, I did it last summer with a different type of scarf. Yet many of you commented that it wouldn’t look good on you because of how your waist has changed over time. I hope that Lesley is proving that theory wrong with this example.
She herself said that “since I have a short/thick waist, I don’t usually belt things. However, since I wanted to change things up, I decided to try an infinity scarf at my waist”.
If you look closely you can see where the extra material is gathered and knotted into a flower. She also played with it to see where the flower sat best and ended up with it sitting on her hip. And you thought an infinity scarf wasn’t versatile, LOL!
Insider tip: This trick can be easily copied with a long scarf. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of outfits with scarves as belts in Cabi’s Spring 2020 Lookbook. With a long scarf you could still make the ends into a knot like Lesley did or let them hang long for a vertical component to the outfit.

Fancy Ways to Wear a Scarf Outlander Style
If you remember from Lesley’s introduction last summer, she also is creative and sews clothing. For example this blanket scarf is one she made 40 years ago from a square of wool fabric. In order to get the fringe on the ends, she spend many hours unraveling the edges to create that look.

Dress: Jostar~~Shoes: Nine West ~~ Blanket Scarf: Lesley made it~~ Necklace: ~~ Bracelet: ~~ Purse:

Lesley knows that I am a huge Outlander fan. That was on her mind as she was styling this blanket scarf. Blanket scarves have been a huge trend for the young girls in these last couple of years. Yet any woman with a larger chest does not appreciate all of the extra material that gathers when it’s tied in the front.
Yet this example for fancy ways to wear a scarf creates an entirely different look to the dress. Having asymmetrical areas of the material creates different focal points for your eyes. You don’t notice any kinds of lumps or bumps if you happen to be trying to hide them.
Insider tip: Lesley not only pinned the front of the scarf, but also added a large safety pin on her shoulder to keep the scarf in place. It’s hidden but effective.

What Accessories Work with a Blanket Scarf?
Lesley wanted to know if you all wore kilt skirts in high school with a kilt pin? This gold pin is her kilt pin from that time period. Using it as part of the functionality for keeping the scarf from moving around makes it easier for you to do things. Yet it also adds some bling and glamour to the look.
Insider tip 1: Make sure to have the pin go through the scarf and the dress so everything stays in place.
Insider tip 2: A large brooch would work for this idea too. If you choose a pin that matches the scarf, then it’s more subtle. Or pick one that contrasts or sticks out as part of your accessory plan. If your brooch clasp is too small to go through all of the layers, then use a safety pink for the under layers, and the pretty brooch for the top layers.
If you want to accessorize more, adding a necklace and bracelet with the same finish as your pin is a wonderful touch.

Nude Shoes
Having the right pair of dressy shoes is definitely something that should be in everyone’s closet no matter what age. A shoe that matches your skin tone is the perfect footwear for those dresses that you aren’t sure what color shoe to wear.
While Lesley is wearing a classic pump here, I think sandals are even a better option if it’s warm enough. Why? Because summer sandals tend to have more openings and don’t push on the parts of our feet that hurt.
Insider tip: Since alterations aren’t possible on making shoes fit better, don’t forget the shoe cushion options. These come in many shapes and versions, and can make all the difference.
