Styling a Halter Top and Shorts for Ageless Style Linkup
Styling a halter top and shorts seems iconic for the summer months. As part of our Ageless Style group, Daenel came up with the idea of “Summer Love.” The interpretation of “Summer Love” is wide open for different thoughts. And as part of that idea, I also included some other summer love categories at the bottom of my ramblings.
Quote of the day: “When all else fails, take a vacation.” Betty Williams
For me growing up, summer was all about vacations since my mom, Charlotte was a teacher. And the quote above seems very apropos because the idea of a vacation to me is either exploring someplace new or relaxing. Both activities I consider helpful to our mental health.
So with the theme of summer love AND the idea that it’s for our Ageless style group, I wanted to showcase some skin with a halter top and shorts. Now don’t get me wrong. I was brought up with modesty as a huge concern. Yet as part of getting older, I am working hard to embrace the skin I’m in, and have fun with style at the same time.
Insider tip: One of my favorite thoughts is ““Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, and the youngest you’ll ever be again.” by Eleanor Roosevelt. Don’t let today go to waste (my input)
Make sure to see what Lesley and Charlotte wore for summer style outfits.
A Halter Top and Shorts

Shorts: Just Black from my Fashom box~~ Cardigan: Inc-thrifted ~~ Top: Bebe-thrifted~~ Shoes: Walking Cradles c/o ~~ Earrings: Frannie & Elinor c/o~~ Purse: ~~Parasol: Lily Lark
Thinking about summer love for fashion means things I don’t get to wear in the winter. Like halter tops and shorts along with sandals which was my focus.
Since I always take a sweater everywhere we go, I thought I’d include a photo with my cardigan as part of the outfit also. This little red cardigan is super lightweight and perfect for the summer months when you go inside air conditioned places.
Even though there is no red in the top, the color mimics the brightness in the halter top and still looks good.
Insider tip: Remember, you don’t have to match all of the colors in your outfits. Adding in a different color is very contemporary.

Halter top Style
Just last week, I talked about our fun scavenger hunt at the Goodwills near us. Even though our mission was to find the 10 things on the list (which I showcased here), we obviously found other things too. When we were returning items at the end the search at our second store, I found this silk halter top.
Needless to say I don’t have many halter style tops because there’s that bra issue. However, I decided to change my thinking and go for it. Especially since recently, I had purchased a bandeau strapless bra. No it’s not a wonderful supportive bra, however, I’m thinking your focus is on my shoulders and back…not the girls.
Insider tip: Our shoulders and back tend to keep their youthful appearance as we get older. In fact, even when my grandma was in her 90’s and I would help her with her bath, I always noticed how wonderful her back looked. This makes me think we should search for items that show it off a little.
Accessories
My earrings are a beautiful hand crafted pair from Frannie & Elinor. I thought since there was so much going on in the outfit, it would be a good idea to wear a metallic that acts as a neutral. Yet, I did throw in a turquoise purse, because my friend Laurel, always says turquoise is universal.
It’s hard to see in these photos, but the neck of the halter top has 4 buttons that keep it closed. The loop closures had no stretch and were impossible to use, so I added snaps on the top and bottom closures instead.
Insider tip: Don’t be afraid to change up the closures on an item. I’ve used these kinds of snaps to close a wrap top gap also like I talked about in an Instagram video before.

Colorful Sandals
When I first saw these pink sandals on Walking Cradles site, I knew I needed them. Bright sandals are another iconic summer item. And since we were out exploring, I knew I needed a comfortable shoe.
This style also comes in a lower heel. I have a pair of those too (in a different color) and I wear them around as slippers. The higher heeled pair (which is 2 inches) is called the Lynn and the 1 inch height are the Keely.
As a Walking Cradles ambassador, I can offer you 15% off any non sale shoe with the code, JODIE15. Much appreciation if you shop using my referral link as I will get a small commission for your purchase even on certain sale items.

Showing Skin
Loving our legs was the theme recently for all three of us. While I realize many of you don’t wear shorts anymore, I am enjoying the option. This pair was from my recent Fashom box as I had asked for a 5 inch inseam white pair of shorts.
Insider tip: Fashom is an online styling box service BUT NOT a subscription. You request a box when and if you want it. It’s risk free because your first styling fee is waived and with my link you get $20 to use to purchase on any item you like.
I try to inspire all of us to love the body we have. For some reason our society has been perfection oriented and since none of us our perfect, where does that leave us? Which is why I’ve shared some Facebook posts here and here that speak to that issue.
And let me also share that I am a work in progress. I am not exempt from looking at the photo below and thinking that maybe my thighs should be covered.
Yet let me point out a couple of facts about focusing on our flaws. One is that anyone that takes the time to focus on those silly things we call flaws needs a life. And two, that’s why I wore a halter top and shorts, so the focus was on my bare back. LET ME TELL YOU HOW SEXY I FELT!! (Even if my girls were almost to my belly…haha).

Parasol
For those of you who don’t love hats because they mess up your hair or seem too hot, have you thought about a parasol? One of the women in the Forever Fierce Group owns the parasol company called Lily Lark. In fact, she was just featured in a Wall Street Journal article about parasols.
I purchased this one at the end of last summer when I realized that we would be out in the sun a lot with our exploration of Arizona. Sure, you could carry a regular umbrella too. And as with everything, there are pros and cons with each option. I thought the parasol would work better than a hat this day with my halter top and shorts since my back was more exposed.
You can see even my mom has a paper parasol that she purchased in Hong Kong from this post.
Insider tip: If you are interested in Lily Lark’s parasols, she will offer my readers 15% off with the code jtouchofstyle (excluding bridal prints).

Other Summer Loves
Since life isn’t just about clothing and style (shocking, I know), I thought it’d be fun to include what summer means to each of us in our posts in regards to other categories. Here are my answers:
1-Food: For me, watermelon is the summer food of choice. When I was little, my grandma would remove the seeds for me. And now we have seedless ones….what a convenience. Which begs the question, are seed spitting contests out of style?
2-Drink: I’m a sucker for any fun cocktail, but it all started with gin and tonics when I was in college.
3-Song: It’s not a popular one but when I was first divorced, my bestie and I listened to the Donnas, and this reminds me of that summer.
4-Movie: For me Top Gun came out the summer when I was in college, and was twitterpating!!
5-Memory: My funniest summer memory is when my mom took me to the Grand Canyon. Funny why? Because I was a brat at the time and wouldn’t get out of the car to see it. So yes, I’ve been there. And no, I haven’t seen it.
6-Event: I think one of my favorite summer events was the Shakespeare festival in Boulder where Rob and I would go to a play every summer for fun.
