Summer Style: Ways to Wear a Kimono

There are so many ways to wear a kimono and it’s such a summer staple piece here in the warmer months. True confession: I remember buying my first kimono which the three of us all wore here, here and here. I didn’t quite understand why it was a must have at the time.
Yet especially since moving to where it really gets hot, it’s nice to have a lightweight cover.

Did you know that you feel cooler if the sun isn’t hitting your body? Therefore, it’s actually better to cover your skin if you’ll be in the sun instead of exposing ourselves to it.

Quote of the day: “Where all think alike, no one thinks very much.” Walter Lippmann

This quote is powerful because while we all like to get inspiration of how to wear things, yet I think it’s also beneficial to make ourselves unique in a way. Our personalities are unique so our style should be too!

That’s why I love the idea of ways to wear a kimono. Because you can change them up to fit the occasion or how you want it to fit. Don’t forget to see how Charlotte and Lesley wore their kimonos differently.
If you need more ideas of how to make your kimono fit better (with no sewing), I have a YouTube video and a blog post about the subject.

Insider tip: Remember your kimono is just a piece of fabric. These ways to adjust it to fit are easily done with many other oversized items.

Ways to Wear a Kimono with a Dress

As part of my goal to wear everything in my closet, I pulled out this yellow dress. It’s what I consider a “fancy” dress as I purchased it for a wedding almost 10 years ago. Yet, what makes it “fancy”? Only my perception of it since I know the occasion for which I wore it in the past.
In all reality, it’s a bright colored dress that I decided to style for a casual day.

Heck, I was going to show this same dress and kimono styled for dress up too, but I ran out of time. But just imagine, adding in heels, a leather belt and a clutch, and I’d be all ready for a date night.
Adding in the sneakers, cloth belt and straw purse seemed perfect for a day of exploring a historic house in our area.

Belt a Kimono

Sure, you see me wearing the belt over the front of the kimono, but look closely at the back photo!! No belt!! That’s because I threaded it through the armhole and under the back portion.

In fact, I showed three different ways to wear a kimono and belt in a short video on Instagram. I’ve seen the over/under trick with a poncho and belt, so I figured a kimono is not much different.

Straw = Summer

This belt was a recent purchase from Target. I only bought it for an Instagram collaboration, yet I’ve found it very versatile and I love how it is so easy to use any “space”. You don’t need a hole at a certain place with the macramé.
Then I added in these earrings because they pulled in the fun flowers from the purse.

The purse? A wonderful thrifted find for my collaboration with Goodwill. The adorable design on the front is almost in pristine shape!!

What is a Kimono?

The nomenclature can throw us off, about ways to wear a kimono. But let’s break it down to more manageable words if that might help.
Here are other descriptions and ideas of how to think about your kimono.

1-It’s a lightweight open poncho
2- It’s a scarf with sleeves (sometimes sleeveless)
3-Call it a flowy cardigan
4-I’ve also seen it called a jacket
5-Think robe or coverup especially at the beach or pool
6-It could be considered a shirt dress if long enough. Then you could pull a Lesley and wear it as a dress.

So does that give you ideas of more ways to wear a kimono? Sometimes we get a tad crazy about categorizing an item which isn’t always necessary.

Colorful kimono from Naomi & Ruth

This Kimono

I purchased this kimono recently from my friend’s online store, Naomi and Ruth. While I rarely pay full price for most items, I do believe in supporting local, small businesses. Besides, a portion of each and every purchase goes to The Dream Center in Phoenix, Arizona. If that’s not a good reason to make my closet more stylish, I don’t know what is.
You may recognize this company when I styled an oversized sweater this spring. It was also an item from Naomi and Ruth.

Many kimonos are one sized and can be overwhelming on our bodies. That’s why I wanted to showcase ways to wear a kimono like this. I was drawn to this particular kimono jacket because of the yellow in it. Yet I really like the mix of colors so it’s not super bright all over.

My Goal

Thank you for visiting my space on the internet. I like to showcase how it’s never too late to look great for women of any age, size or working with any budget.
I feel I’m here to help move beyond the fashion rules of yesterday and evolve. Style and clothes are made to give you joy. Not cause us stress because we are worried about what other’s think.

My hope is that you get ideas and inspirations from Charlotte, Lesley and myself. It’s not about copying what we wear, but about using what you already have and updating items along the way.
Most of all it’s getting us to think differently and dare I say, have fun?
