How to Tie a Scarf as a Top Modestly
Maybe you used to tie a scarf as a top when you were much younger? But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways we can make it work even as we get older.
Quote of the day: “Follow what you are genuinely passionate about and let that guide you to your destination.” Diane Sawyer
If you’ve been reading awhile, then you know that I am passionate about making our items versatile AND having fun with our style. This week’s theme is all about styling a scarf to top an outfit as requested by a reader. Lesley showcased how a large scarf could be two different kinds of sarongs. Charlotte showed a poncho worn two ways.
What I wanted to do was really SHOW OFF the scarf. Just think about when we wear a scarf around our neck or hat, the scarf gets rolled up and you don’t see the beautiful print.
This way to tie a scarf as a top really features the material of the scarf. It’s really like a kimono.
2 Ways to Wear the Scarf Like This

Skirt: Fashom ~~Sports Bra: Peach ~~ Shoes: Rocket Dog~~ Scarf: LuxSatin c/o~~ Earrings: Target ~~ Purse:
The 2 ways to wear the scarf like this are only different in that in the photo below I used the opening as a sleeve. In the top style, I created a one sleeve kimono with the scarf.
I also show how it looks different from the back in at the end of the post.
The big difference between the two options is if you want your shoulder exposed and how long you want the scarf to hang.
And this is EASY. All you do is drape the scarf over one shoulder and attach the ends together. How? Keep reading.
Items to Use to Hold the Scarf Together
For my example this day, I used 2 different elements to hold the scarf together. For the top portion under my arm, I used a scarf clip. At the bottom of the kimono, I used a clip on earring.
There are other items you could use for this way to tie a scarf as a top. You could always use a safety pin if you don’t mind putting holes in the scarf. Another option would be a magnet, like MK has shown us in the past.
Insider tip: Another creative idea could be to use a man’s tie clip.
What Accessories Work
Since I really wanted to keep the focus on the fabulous scarf, I only added in earrings to the outfit. These tassel earrings are a favorite since they are so lightweight yet still make a fun statement.
This was the first outing with my newest turquoise glasses. I purchased these from Zenni. I ordered the transitions to sunglasses but wish I had chosen the darker tint. My husband chose the 95% dark for his pair and they get much darker.
Insider tip: I’ve compared and contrasted other online prescription glasses in the past. I think it’s a great way to save money and allows me to have a couple of different pairs while not breaking the bank.
You may also notice the blue pashmina tied on my purse in these photos. That was added for functionality since we were going to the aquarium and out to dinner afterwards (more about that in Charlotte’s post). I like to have an extra layer in case the air conditioning is too cold. And yes, I did use it.

What you Should Wear Underneath
For my outfit, I decided to wear a sports bra under this scarf. Some of the sports bras have such fun straps that it’s a shame not to showcase them.
However, if you wanted more coverage, you could easily wear a regular t-shirt or even a Half tee (which would be cooler for the summer). I posted 5 different ways I’ve worn my Halftee. Since I signed up to be an ambassador you can get 10% off with my link or code, JTOUCH10.

Sneaker Love
The trend of sneakers and skirts or dresses is one of those that has cycled around again. I know this trend is not loved by everyone, yet it combines comfort and style.
If you worry that it could make you look frumpy, then here’s my suggestions.
1-Find interesting sneakers instead of basic ones.
2-Make sure the dress/skirt fits well. A huge factor of frump is ill fitting pieces.
3-Create the focal point elsewhere. For example, all eyes are on this scarf instead of my skirt and shoes.
The Bottom Half & The Scarf
With the feature of a scarf like this, the bottom half is not going to be as important. For my outfit, I wore my white denim skirt. This skirt is from one of my Fashom boxes. If you haven’t tried any style box before, I think it’s very beneficial. Especially right now when many people aren’t going out as much. I wrote a post comparing 3 different companies which you can read here.
Insider tip: When you sign up for ANY online style box, the biggest factor to make it successful is the communication you provide with your stylist AND being open to different items. Remember this is the best way to get out of a style rut, and if you only request things you already have, then you will stay in that rut.
As for this scarf, it was a gift from LuxSatin this spring. In fact, all three of us showed different ways to style @LuxSatin scarves on Instagram.
Scarves are one of those things, you can find easily for little money. Many times they are fabulous souvenirs when you are traveling, or check out your local second hand store too.
